: 4.0 Periodic Table of Elements
: 4.3 Analysing group 1 elements

Learning Outcomes

: A student is able to
List all Group 1 elements
State the general physical properties of lithium, natrium and kalium
Describe changes in the physical properties from lithium to kalium

Students Prior Knowledge :Students already know about the basic principle of arranging the elements in the Periodic Table
Relate the electron arrangement of an elements to its group and period
Objective

: At the end of the lesson students should be able to

a) Content knowledge

List all the Group 1 element

State the physical properties of Li, Na, K.

Describe changes in density, boiling point, melting point when go down group 1

b) Scientific skills

Students observe the colour of the solid which was showed by the teacher

Students observe whether the cork and stone sink or not when teacher put it into the water.

Students discuss the questions given by the teacher with their friends

Students answer the questions which were asked by the teacher

c) Attitude skills

Resources

Students cooperate with their friends in discussing the questions given by the teacher.

Structuring lesson.
Introduce students with
the elements of Group 1 in
the Periodic Table.

Empowering
Step 1
(12 minutes)

Teacher introduces the topic for that day.

Teacher shows the Power point slide
containing the electron configuration of Group
1 elements.
Teacher relates the electron configuration with
the balloon size (students have to relate with
their prior knowledge (electron arrangement
and period) to put to the element correctly)
Teacher put the elements name on the
balloons.
Teacher makes a conclusion based on the
activity that has been done by relating with its
atomic number and orbital.
Teacher asks students to compare the balloons
arrangement with the Group one element in the
real periodic table.

The density increase from Lithium

Teachers ask students what they can see from

the samples such as the colour
Teacher shows students the power point of
physical properties of Group 1.
Teacher put the cork and stone into the water
to show the density of Li, Na, K.
( teachers asks students to assume the cork as
LI, Na, K.)
Teachers show the slide of boiling point and
melting point and explains its changes when
go down Group 1.
Teachers shows the table of Group 1 elements
and asks students the changes in physical
properties from Li to Cs.
Teacher cut the sample to show that the
sample can be cut easily.
Teacher shows the picture of Lithium,
Sodium and Potassium and explain the

to Potassium.
The increasing of atomic mass is
higher than the increasing of
atomic radius.

Finally, teacher shows the values of melting
point, boiling point and density in a table.

Teacher asks students to make 3 groups and Balloons
each group will have 2 cards.
