Q1.

(a) Figure 1 shows the one-line diagram of a simple three-bus power system with generation at bus 1
and bus 3. The voltage at bus 1 is V1 = 1.0250O per unit. Voltage magnitude at bus 3 is fixed at
1.03 per unit with a real power generation of 300 MW. A load consisting of 400 MW and 200 MVAR
is taken from bus 2. Line impedances are marked per unit on a 100 MVA bas. The line resistances
and line charging susceptances are neglected.
a. Using Gauss-Seidel method and initial estimates of V2(0) = 1.0 + j0 and V3(0) = 1.03 + j0 and
keeping |V3| = 1.03 p.u., determine the phasor values of V2 and V3. Perform two
iterations.

Q2.
(a) A generator is connected through a transformer to a synchronous motor. On the same base, the
per-unit sub transient reactances of the generator and motor are 0.15 and 0.35 pu respectively
and the leakage reactance of the transformer is 0.10 per unit. A three-phase fault occurs at the
terminals of the motor when the terminal voltage of the generator is 0.9 per unit and the output
current of the generator is 1.0 per unit at 0.8 PF leading. Find the subtransient current in per unit
in the fault; in the generator and in the motor. Use the terminal voltage of the generator as the
reference phasor and obtain the solution (a) by computing the voltages behind subtransient
reactance of motor and generator and (b) by using Thevernins Theorem.

Q3.
(a) Draw the Zero Sequence Network of the power system shown in figure 2.

Figure 2
(b) The voltages at the terminals of a balanced load consisting of three 10 resistors connected in WYE
are Vab = 1000O, Vbc = 80.8-121.44O, and Vca = 90130O V. Assume that there is NO connection to
the neutral of the load.
a. Find the Line Currents from the symmetrical components of the given line voltages.

Q4.
(a) Two synchronous machines are connected through 3-phase transformers of the transmission line as
shown in figure 3. The ratings and reactances of the machine and transformers are
Machine 1 and 2:

100 MVA, 20 kV;

Xd = X1 = X2 = 20%,

Transformers T1 and T2:

100 MVA, 20Y/345Y kV;

X0 = 4%,

Xn = 5%

X = 8%

On a base of 100 MVA, 345 kV in the transmission-line circuit, the line reactances are X1 = X2 = 15% and
X0 = 50%. The system is operating at nominal voltage without pre-fault current when a bolted (Zf = 0)
single line-to-ground fault occurs on phase A at bus 4. Using the bus impedance matrix for each of the
three sequence networks:
a. Determine the Subtransient Current to ground at the fault
b. The Line-to-Ground voltages at bus 3 and
c. The Subtransient Current out of phase C of bus 3.
