The SEQUOIA is a harness designed for tree care. It is designed for the arborists
comfort. The extra-wide, semi-rigid waistbelt and leg loops give excellent support. The
attachment bridge is linked to two gated rings, allowing its length to be adjusted and

ROPE SAVERS
The 2010 ART Ropeguide now comes in the

150cm or 300cm version with either a link pulley
or a cocoon pulley and some improvements.
The webbing from previous versions is now
made of a parallel sewn aramide rope resulting
in more abrasion resistance and less tangle. There
is a tunnel-ring for the aramide rope where the
radius of the ring improves the strength of the
rope and the rope improves the strength of the
aluminium ring to more than 25kN.
The Fender is on one side of the eye behind
the ring and helps to twist the ring into an upright
posistion when pulling it through a tight crotch.
The deflecting lever on the main unit helps release
the cam when it comes to removing the Ropeguide
from the tree.

Friction savers reduce premature wear on your climbing
line, and eliminates damage to tree limbs caused by excess friction.
Friction savers are load rated, offering superior insurance for your safety.
The use of a friction saver minimises friction when working from different
positions in the tree, and can be wrapped around a stem for use as a false crotch
where no natural crotch exists.
By using your throw line and throw ball, the friction saver can quickly be placed
in the crotch of a tree and climbing line installed, all from standing on the
ground (refer page 14 for use of the throw line and throw ball). To remove it
simply tie a figure eight knot in your line or use your retrieval ball, and pull it
through the large ring first. The knot or ball will stop at the small ring bringing
your friction saver to the ground.
Installing the False Crotch - From the Ground

1 Install and isolate the throw line around the crotch. Pass the running end
through the large ring and the working end (end with throw ball) through
the small ring. The throw ball will need to be removed first and then reattached afterward. If the ring of the throw ball slips through the ring of the
false crotch, attach a carabiner to the throw ball ring. Raise the false crotch
into the tree by pulling on the throw line.
2 Pull on the throw line until the device just reaches the crotch. Give a quick
yank and the device will flip it into position in the crotch.
3 Lower the throw ball and line back to the ground.
4 Secure the throw line to the rope with two clove hitches (Half hitch in
between is optional) and pull through the rings and back to ground.
Retrieving the False Crotch

1 Tie a figure eight knot in the rope end (or use the retrieval ball) that will pass through the large ring
first. The knot must be small enough to fit through the large ring but large enough to catch on the
smaller ring.
2 Continue pulling the rope as the knot catches the smaller ring of the device allowing it to be pulled
back to the ground.
It is strongly recommended that a throwline be tied to the rope to control the descent of the false
crotch device during retrieval. This will protect the user from head injury and the false crotch from damage caused from ground impact. This will also prevent hang-ups in the tree.

simply tie the sling around the tree, below the area to be cut, with the pulley on the falling side.
By threading your lowering line through the pulley at the new pivot point, instead of the rough
crotch of a tree, heat and friction are reduced to nearly zero.
Bull ropes will last longer, and, combined with a Port-A-Wrap, will provide you with greater
control of heavy wood, eliminating the destruction of expensive or sensitive landscapes. This

This old-fashioned choker adjusts to a wide range of diameters
in just seconds. No other choker allows the user to adjust to the
appropriate circumference so fast. With other choking devices
(except for an eye sling), you end up with either too much eye or
no eye at all, depending on the size of your mount. Its ideal to
have a short anchor point to remove play in an already dynamic
system, reducing unnecessary shock to hardware and ropes.

The Port-A-Wrap is a friction device designed for lowering wood with ropes. This simple design
allows quick wrapping and unwrapping of working lines, without the time consuming need to remove
the device from its anchor point. The Port-A-Wrap requires the use of a strop or whoopie sling to

Learning the Ropes
The issue of tensile strength versus

safe working load is an important one
for tree workers to comprehend. With
our aging urban landscape comes an
ever increasing demand for rigging and
technical tree removals. A thorough
understanding of the strengths
and weaknesses of your tools, is as
important as the profits that you gain
from them. Tree climbers are aware
that they can hoist their own body
weight by pulling on the falling end
of line from a tree. Most have also
discovered, that a lone friend cant
raise them with the same line end.
In our example (left), the
man can only lift the
log if it weighs less
than his own total
body weight. If the
log weighs more,
the man leaves the
ground before the
log does. If the man
and log both weigh
200 pounds each and
the man lifts himself
off the ground then
he and the log have
reached a balance
point. When the

man connects the
line to his waist
and pulls on the
opposite end, he
can lift himself
off the ground
because he is
on ly d isplacin g
half of his total
weight. The pulley
is supporting his
entire 200 pounds.
When he attempts
to lift the 200
pound log, the
pulley is suddenly
supporting 400
pounds, the weight
of both ends.
In rigging, the same
formula applies, plus the
added characteristic of
objects in motion. Thus we can conclude
that we dont want our rigging point,
whether a block pulley or a natural
crotch, to be the weak link in our
rigging system.
and understand the difference between

tensile strength and safe or smart
working load.
In our next example (pictured on the
left), Chris and Nigel butt hitch a log
which comes to a shuddering halt. Not
only is Chris knocked out of his spurs,
but the lowering line is undergoing
potential internal damage. Depending on
the circumstances, a 200lb log snubbed
off at 5 feet, has the potential to
create more than 2,500lbs of force at
the rigging point. If Nigel had let the
log run to a smoother stop, while using
a block pulley and friction device (as
below), the rope would avoid such fiber
shearing dynamics, and the climber
would be safer.
The more you understand about
potential shock load forces and the
proper use and care of rigging lines, the
easier you can work. Continued training
in proper rigging and roping techniques
can be a life saver.

Before, during and after manufacture, Buckingham climbers from every production
lot undergo rigorous testing.
They are subjected to physical abuse far beyond

Zubat A taper ground curved blade that is narrower along the back edge and wider towards the
toothed edge. This prevents binding of the blade to the freshly cut surface during sawing reducing
friction and drag and contributing to a faster and easier cutting performance. The curve in the blade
gives extra bite therefore less downward pressure is required during cutting. Of particular note is the

The Intelligent Tree Bracing System

Cobra is a self adjusting tree bracing system that has spring in it allowing the braced tree to move naturally in the
wind, building support wood the natural way rather than being held rigid with wire rope. Not only is the Cobra
Bracing System of benefit to the tree it is relatively quick to install and offers ongoing convenience. The installer
doesnt have to make numerous return visits to readjust the brace. Cobra is self adjusting.
In the neck is a wide insert (see Step 2 below) that spreads the point of contact reducing pressure against the tree.
A skin-like sleeve (step 2 & 3) eliminates abrasion, just as a Friction Saver does for climbing lines. The installer
produces a self adjusting coil (step 3) that awaits future limb growth to eliminate girdling of the growing wood.
And last of all, a unique shock absorber (step 4) gives life, and motion, when the tree needs it most.
