Summary of Project Proposal

Project Title: Development of rapid change mechanism of presser foot

and feasibility study of 3d printed spare parts for lockstitch
sewing machine in garment industry.

1.

Introduction:
Today's world is known as an era of technical evolution, where
most of the manual works are being replaced by automated and
semi-automated machines. Now the 3D printing technology
comes into action to change the scenario of the garment/fashion
industry which gives a reduced time and cost for making a
product with more precision and in a customised way.

Background study:
3D printing is a form of additive manufacturing technology where a
three dimensional object is created by laying down successive layers
of material. It is also known as rapid prototyping, is a mechanized
method whereby 3D objects are quickly made on a reasonably sized
machine connected to a computer containing blueprints for the object.
The 3D printing concept of custom manufacturing is exciting to nearly
everyone. This revolutionary method for creating 3D models with the
use of inkjet technology saves time and cost by eliminating the need
to design; print and glue together separate model parts. Now, you can
create a complete model in a single process using 3D printing. The
basic principles include materials cartridges, flexibility of output, and
translation of code into a visible pattern. 3D printing is a quickly
expanding field, with the popularity and uses for 3D printers growing
every day. 3D printing can be used to prototype, create replacement
parts, and is even versatile enough to print prostheses and machine
spare parts. It will have a growing impact on our world, as more and
more people gain access to these amazing machines.
2. Scope of work:

During the manufacturing of a garment sometimes different attachments

are required, and those attachments are then ordered. The manufacturer
supplies the attachments at very higher rate and consumes days to
deliver the attachments. But, now rapidly increasing technology of 3D
printing will cuts off the time and cost required to manufacture the
attachments and spares.

3.

Objectives
1. To check the feasibility of using 3D printed spare
parts & attachments &to identify the customised
spares and attachments
2. Design evaluation and prototyping of the presser
foot & feed dog of Sewing machine.

possibility of Commercialization of the outcome:
The garment industry is a labour intensive industry which is spread
worldwide.
The costing done in garment manufacturing is highly influenced by
labour involvement and time taken to make one unit of the order.
This end product tackles various factors.
Since the spares and attachments are printed through 3D printer
will cuts off the time and cost to manufacture
Since, the products are made in the premises then it will shorten
the process of apparel supply chain in terms of manufacturing
spare parts and attachments.
