Medications (Clonidine, Haloperidol, Olanzapine)
GOAL(S) OF TEACHING PLAN
- Patient will verbalize the purpose and effects of the medications within a week.
- Patient will be able to discuss the different types of medications

Clonidine is a antihypertensive
agent. It is used to treat
hypertension and ADH.D. It is also
used to help treat Gilles de la
Tourette syndrome. Adverse
effects include: hypotension, dry
mouth, somnolence, rebound
hypertension, ear pain,
constipation, fever, throat pain,
UTI, pruritus, bradycardia.
With transdermal system, apply
patch to hairless area of skin. Then
apply the adhesive overlay to
ensure adhesion of patch. Change
patch every 7 days; use a different
site each time. If taken PO take
higher dose at bedtime to ensure
overnight control of BP. Extended
release tablet must be swallowed

Do not engage in activities that
require mental alertness. Do not
change regimen or stop drug
abruptly. Record daily weight in
the morning in the same clothing
to determine if there is edema
caused by sodium retention.
Report any depression, especially
with history of it.
Haloperidol is a typical
antipsychotic. It is used to treat
psychotic disorders, severe
behavior problems in children, and
control of tics and vocal utterances
associated with Tourettes
syndrome. Adverse effects include:
extrapyramidal symptoms,
drowsiness, blurred vision, GI
upset, anorexia, headache,
salivation, dry mouth, sweating,
sleep disturbances, restlessness,
and constipation. Sunlight
sensitivity may occur; avoid
unnecessary exposure to UV lights.
Immediately report any new onset
involuntary, dyskinetic
movements, temperature elevation,
muscle rigidity, altered mental
status; stop drug. Inform that
medication may take up to 6weeks
for full benefits to occur. Ensure
adequate hydration. Report muscle
weakness/ stiffness. Change
position slowly to avoid drop in BP.
May use sugarless gum, ice chips,
and sips of water for dry mouth

Olanzapine is an atypical
antipsychotic agent. It is used to
treat schizophrenia, bipolar 1,
depression. It is also used to treat
Tourettes disorder. Adverse effects
include: Asthenia, dizziness,
sedation, constipation, dry mouth,
dyspepsia, weight gain, muscle
rigidity, irregular pulse/BP,
hemorrhage, suicide, cardiac
arrest, increased cough,
hypotension, and personality
disorder. Assess mental status and
monitor any significant changes in
behavior. Monitor VS, WT, ECG,
CBC. Avoid activities where
overheating may occur. Avoid
changing positions suddenly.
Report suicidal ideation, abnormal
bleeding, sudden muscle pain,
irregular heartbeat.
