Landmark Year For Film Fiji - 2014

The past year proved to be a landmark
year for the film industry with an
unprecedented 52 foreign productions
shot on location in Fiji.
From these productions, over $60 million
of new economic activity was generated
for Fiji.
This boosted the local economy greatly
and contributed to foreign reserves as
production costs were funded from
imported foreign currency.
The productions included television
commercials,
travel
shows,
documentaries, reality shows, television
series, promotional videos, and feature
films, with budgets ranging up to $10
million.
Film Fiji chief executive, Dallas Foon,
said: We are very pleased to have had
such a successful year for filming in Fiji.
Most importantly, there were 440 locals
employed because of these productions.
Those employed benefited from the
training and skills development by these
productions.
The benefits of film production previously
concentrated primarily in the Western
Division, however, recent productions
have been based in the Eastern and
Northern division, thereby, spreading the
spend over more areas of the country.
Projections this year
As for projections this year, Mr Foon
confirmed they are currently pursuing
five renowned international producers for
possibility of bringing major productions
to Fiji.
We hope to secure some of them. We will
be making appropriate announcements at

the time, he said.

Fiji is a popular filming destination for
TV and we regularly get crews from
Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South
Korea, India, USA and Europe.
This activity increased the past year
and we are working at increasing this
momentum even further this year through
trade shows, direct relations with TV
producers and the international filming
network.
Mr Foon said they will be in Chennai,
Hyderabad, Mumbai and Los Angeles this
month and early March at filming market
trade shows.
Support leads to success
Film Fiji chairperson, Shaenaz Voss, said
Film Fijis successful year could not have
been achieved without the tremendous
continued support from the Fijian

Government.
He said this was through the provision
of incentives, budgetary assistance and
general support.
Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism,
Faiyaz Siddiq Koya, said: The Fijian
Government is very pleased with such a
high turnover of film production last year,
a great year indeed for Film Fiji.
The Government will continue providing
the necessary support and resources to
Film Fiji.
There are synergies to be drawn from
having a successful film industry and the
inflow of tourists and investment.
Hence, the three promotional bodies, that
is Film Fiji, Investment Fiji and Tourism
Fiji will continue to work together in
marketing and promotion campaigns
internationally to get maximum exposure.

Texas Students Call For Texas Fiji Chapter

To Be Punished
Students at the University of Texas
campus have created a petition demanding
UT officials punish a fraternity accused of
having a racist party.
The Texas Fiji fraternity says it was a
western theme party, but other students
say it was a border patrol theme.
The Daily Texan first broke the story
reporting some party goers wore
construction clothes, sombreros with
Hispanic names, ponchos and others wore
military uniforms.
"It shouldn't be okay they get away with
it," said UT student Nohemy Aguirre.
More than 1,000 students have signed a
petition, supported by dozens of student
groups. It expresses frustration over theme

604.909.4088

parties that highlight stereotypes, and asks

the UT administration for consequences
so they don't happen anymore.
The Dean of Students Office is
investigating to see if the fraternity
crossed the line. If they violated rules
outlined in a student handbook, the
group could be banned, put on probation,
ordered into community service or given
a warning.
"I know they are really big against hazing
and suspending," said Edwin Hurtado, a
UT student. "I think they should have the
same reaction to racially discriminatory
parties like these."
The Dean of Students Office puts out a list
of party themes that are not recommended

604.510.4088

and fiesta/ south of the border parties are

on the list.
The Campus Climate Response Team is
investigating multiple complaints from
people upset by the Fiji theme.
A UT education professor says the incident
highlights a deeper cultural problem.
"This is very offensive what the students
have done," said Angela Valenzuela, a
professor who studies race, culture and
education.
The national FIJI chapter could also
penalize the UT chapter. Neither groups
returned calls for comment.
A UT spokesperson says there is no
timeline on when the dean of students will
wrap up its investigation.

One Hundred Sands Will Forge On: CEO

Manning

One Hundred Sands says it has not

been served with anything stating the
cancellation of the casino licence in Nadi.
The developer was issued an exclusive
casino license by Government in 2011.
But it has repeatedly failed to build and
run the casino as agreed.
Chief executive, Tim Manning confirmed
to the the media that One Hundred Sands
still holds the licence.
Their reaction follows confirmation by
the Attorney-General and Minister for
Finance Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum that the
exclusive Casino License given to One
Hundred Sands has been revoked. New
bids would be called, he said.
Mr Manning maintained that One Hundred
Sands is working to open the first casino
in Fiji shortly.
He said they had sent a letter to
Government on Tuesday with a list of
matters that required its input.
We expect to sit down with them in
the next 14 days and confirm these, he
said.
Once I have direction on these items, I
will be in a position to confirm to you the

location and the timing of the first casino.

Mr Manning also clarified that the lawsuit
filed by the American-based Snoqualmie
Tribe was against One Hundred Sands

chairman, Larry Claunchs US company

and not One Hundred Sands.
He further said the case was discontinued
six months ago.

Lands And FRCA Sign MOU 5736 Issued

New Citizenship
On Stamp Duty

The collection of stamp duty from transfer

of land, lease agreements, mortgages and
building contracts will now be undertaken
by the Fiji Revenue and Customs
Authority (FRCA).
A Memorandum of Understanding
(MOU) was signed between the Ministry
of Lands & Mineral Resources and FRCA
in Suva, which outlines the processes and
procedures for the collection of stamp
duty.
Speaking at the signing, FRCA chief
executive officer, Jitoko Tikolevu said the
MOU allows for an effective collection of
stamp duty by the organisation.
From government perspective, this
MOU brings about a more centralised
and effective way of the collection of
taxes.
We are very grateful for the opportunity
to collect the stamp duty which should cut
out the unnecessary steps involved in the
collection, Mr Tikolevu said.
Administrative burden minimal
Mr Tikolevu said FRCA will ensure that
the administrative burden on stakeholders,

SC

particularly the public at large, is

minimised after they take on the role of
stamp duty collection.
Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources
permanent secretary, Tevita Boseiwaqa
said this is part of the reforms taking place
at the ministry.
The process that we are going through
is quite expensive in the sense that it
takes a lot of time and it affects our
delivery of service. With this MOU,
we will save cost and time and deliver
the services that we are required to
deliver to our various stakeholders, Mr
Boseiwaqa said.
Mr Boseiwaqa said todays signing is the
beginning of a partnership with FRCA in
other areas of common interest between
the two institutions.
Most of these require personal attributes
from those who are going to implement
the collection. There is a need to have
trust, the need to have negotiation skills
and the need to communicate well.
The collection of stamp duty by FRCA
comes into effect Friday.

The Immigration Department issued 5736

people from 60 countries with Fijian
citizenship between 2007 and 2014.
Immigration Minister Colonel Timoci
Natuva informed Parliament that the
highest number of applications requesting
a Fijian citizenship was coming from
countries such as New Zealand, Australia,
USA, China, Canada and India.
Col Natuva said the total number of
citizenship granted between the years
2007 to 2014 also included 1321 children
of Fiji citizens born abroad and classified
as Stateless.
"From those 5736 individuals, 1532
are former Fiji citizens now on dual
citizenship and 569 through naturalisation
individuals who had work permits
and lived in Fiji for five years, get the
citizenship," he said.
Col Natuva said a Fijian citizenship could
be acquired either by birth registration or
naturalisation.
He said Fiji had two separate laws of
citizenship with one being the 1997
Constitution and the current Citizenship
Decree 2009.

Rewa Rice To Introduce New Products

Product diversification has become a
major priority for Rewa Rice Limited.
The Government commercial company
will be introducing two new products, rice
flour and unpolished rice into the Fijian
market in a months time.
Company mill manager Ashrit Pratap
said they are currently selling only one
product.
At the moment we only selling brown
rice and we are operating under a low
margin because of the competition from
outside, Mr Pratap said.
But we are planning to introduce a new
variety into the market like the unpolished
brown rice because our current product is
semi-polished.
He said this product would be targeting the
older generation through the supermarkets
and hospitals.
Looking at the research unpolished is
very healthy and its good for any person
with
Non-Communicable
Diseases,
diabetes or gastritis and other diseases,
Mr Pratap said.

Also we want to introduce rice flour. We

have tested it to make bread, and its turn out
to be a good product. For the rice flour we
are targeting the bakeries for making bread.
We are planning to launch the products in
a months time in Labasa but distributed

around Fiji.
The company is currently working on the
packaging designs of the new products
which are being done locally.
Pricing of the products has not been
finalised.

The new freight station was one of the key
goals of expansion for the company.

after the opening of their new warehouse
at the end of last year.
Now that Suva is already up and running,
Lautoka is in the pipeline and we intend to
open an office in Nadi. he said.
When asked about their performance,
Mr Mallam said so far the company is
performing up to expectation and with
the substantial amount of investment they

Parking Space Boost For Private Jets

In order to meet the increase in demand

for private jet parking at the Nadi
international airport, the Airports Fiji
Limited is carrying out major upgrading
to its apron area.
Airports Fiji Limited (AFL) executive
chairman Faiz Khan says this latest
development responds to an in private jets
entering the country and using the Nadi
International Airport.
We currently have an apron area which
caters for nine aircrafts at any given time
but we have planned for the future to
ensure that private jet owners are able to
get a parking, he said.
This is a different project altogether but
running in parallel with the facelift of the
airport terminal.
Mr Khan added that the multi million
dollar project would boost Fijis
capabilities as the hub of the Pacific.
We are planning for the future and we

do not want to turn away jets that arrive

and want a parking space. This is a future
minded plan for AFL, Mr Khan said. He
added the facelift renovations taking place

at the airport was progressing well.

Were well underway on the airport
terminal and facelift project and will be
open as scheduled.

THE importance of India to Tourism Fiji's

long-term strategy to boost visitor arrivals
cannot be overstated, says the Minister
for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Faiyaz
Koya.
Speaking at the roadshow in New Delhi,
Mr Koya said the roadshow was a central
part of Tourism Fiji's marketing and
promotion strategy for India one of
the markets it had identified as having the
best potential for growth.
"The country is central to our plan to
expand into non-traditional markets
and we expect 2015 to be a bumper
year in terms of visitor arrivals from the
Subcontinent," he said in a statement.
He believed this optimism was well placed
because there was such great potential for
growth.

"There are so many opportunities to

explore within the Indian market and
these roadshows are absolutely essential
to help us chart the way."
Tourism Fiji's roadshow in India has
been deemed a massive success after
visiting four of the country's largest cities,
expanding opportunities in one of the
most important growth markets for Fiji's
tourism industry.
The week-long roadshow was led by Mr
Koya and included senior Government
officials, Tourism Fiji representatives, and
a range of other leading industry figures
from the private sector. It made stops in
New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai.
He said this year's roadshow was
especially important because it followed
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's

historic visit to Fiji in November last year.

"Over 450 travel and tour operators
participated in this year's the roadshow,
which is an increase from previous years.
"This is an indication of the growing
interest in Fiji from the Indian traveller,"
the Minister said.
"One of the key successes of the roadshow
was the launch of a new brochure on Fiji
in Mumbai targeted at the average
Indian travellers.
"This brochure was developed by Tourism
Fiji in partnership with a world renowned
Swiss-based travel and tour operator
Kuoni-SOTC," the Minister added.
The roadshow followed Fiji's participation
in the three-day South Asian Travel and
Tourism Exchange (SATTE), in New
Delhi, which ended on January 31.

branches have been advised to accept old

$2 coins from customers, including traders
who may wish to have these deposited into
their accounts or exchanged for new ones.
The RBF is however concerned that even
though these arrangements are in place
with the banks to assist individuals and
traders in getting value for the old $2
coins, some traders are declining to accept
the old $2 coins.
"Traders therefore have the assurance that
they will get value for all old $2 coins
they receive from their customers," Mr
Whiteside said.
While there is no deadline with the

banks, he said the public and traders were

encouraged to return these coins to a bank
near them as soon as possible.
The new $2 coins were issued into
circulation from November 3, 2014 to
address concerns regarding confusion
between the current $1 and the then old
$2 coins.
"The public who may still have some old
coins with them are strongly encouraged
to return the old $2 coins to a bank near
them at their earliest in exchange for new
$2 coins, or alternatively they can deposit
the coins into their bank accounts," Mr
Whiteside said.

Growth Potential

TRADERS and retailers are encouraged

to continue accepting the old $2 coins for
transactional purposes should a customer
present these for the benefit of both the
retailers and consumers.
The Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF) confirms
that the old $2 coins are still legal tender
coins.
Traders are also encouraged by the central
bank to assist in the withdrawal process
and deposit these coins with their bank
and not to reissue them to customers as
change.
This comes after RBF Governor Barry

Fiji Officers Charged With Manslaughter,

Rape

Eight Fiji police officers and a soldier have been charged with manslaughter and rape in relation to the death of Vilikesa Soko,
who died in police custody last year.
30-year-old Mr Soko was arrested in
connection to a robbery in Nadi in August,
and died at Lautoka Hospital after being
beaten while in police custody.
The director of public prosecutions, Christopher
Pryde has jointly charged nine people - Manasa
Talala, Seruvi Caqusau, Kelevi Sewatu,
Penaia Drauna, Filise Vere, Viliame Vereivalu,
Jona Davonu, Pita Matairavula and Senitiki
Natakasavu- with manslaughter and rape.
The same officers have also been charged
with assault causing bodily harm to
Senijieli Boila, who was also beaten while
in police custody.
The DPP says two of the officers - Manasa
Talala and Viliame Vereivalu - have also
been charged with perverting the course
of justice by instructing other police
officers to make false statements during
the investigation.
Mr Pryde says the police are to be
commended for conducting a professional
and thorough investigation.
He says the case reinforces the
commitment of the state to bring to
justice any person who thinks their
Christopher Pryde, Fiji's Director of Public Prosecutions
position places them above the law.

Residents Fear Robbery

A number of residents in Naulu, Nakasi

say they are living in fear of being robbed.
An alleged robbery and two attempted
robberies last Monday has caused
sleepless nights for some families in the
area.
Fiji Police Force spokesperson Ana
Naisoro has confirmed receiving a report
from one of the victims, Dhurup Chand.
The only item mentioned as stolen is the
tablet, Ms Naisoro said.
Police investigations are continuing.
Nazma Bibi, 51, said: The robbers have
robbed my childrens two laptops worth
$4000, four smart phones and some gold
jewellery and $700 cash.
We are residing here (Naulu Road) for
the past 22 years and we have never come
across such cases. This is the first time.
We reported the matter to Police the very
next morning.
Her daughter, Shazleen Shana Bibi said
they were afraid for their security.
When we woke up the next morning
and discovered our things were missing
and what was more shocking was finding
knives and sticks in our rooms, Ms Bibi
said. We are really scared, in fact now

when we come back from school, we do

our daily activities and sleep till 11pm and
stay up late hours so that we can be alert.
Another victim of an alleged robbery,
Himani Devi, 25, said: The robbers had
attacked our house for the second time but
we managed to save our stuff.
We are getting more secured as we are
putting shutters and grills on windows and
doors so that there is no third attack.

I Need My Family - Rahiman

Eighty-five year old Rahiman will not rest

until she finds her family.
Ms Rahiman claimed she was sent from
the United States of America by her
nephew Mohammed Philip to visit her
sister in Fiji.
She later discovered that her sister had
died and hopes to return to the US soon.
Since then the Navua-born native has been
travelling from Nausori to Suva where she
was later reported to the Ministry of Women,
Children and Social Welfare last year.
Currently Ms Rahiman is being looked
after at the Golden Age Home in Lautoka.
It has not been identified as to when Ms
Rahiman had arrived in Fiji and whether
she had been living in the US but there
has been evidence that a relative may have
renewed her passport last year which will
expire in 2024.
Minister for Women, Children and Social
Welfare Rosy Akbar who spoke on the
issue, has asked the public to be more
respectful to senior citizens.
This is a serious social problem and I
advise family to instill the values of care,

compassion and respect for these elderly,

Ms Akbar said.
We are working together with the
Ministry of Health to look at ways to
address the issues concerning mentallychallenged beggars, she said.
Ms Akbar urged the public to seek

assistance from the ministry if there were

any queries.
I can assure the public that the ministry
is here to assist and we are interested
in the welfare of the women, children,
senior citizens and persons living with
disabilities, she said.

Fiji Flag Designer Tessa Mackenzie Disappointed

By Frank Bainimarama's Plan To Replace It

The designer of Fiji's current flag says she

is disappointed by Prime Minister Frank
Bainimarama's move to replace it with a
new one.
Tessa Mackenzie won the competition
in 1970 to design the flag after placing
the British Union Jack and the shield
from Fiji's Coat of Arms on a sky blue
background.
Mr Bainimarama said they were British
symbols that were not relevant to a
modern, independent Fiji.
Ms Mackenzie, now 80 years old and still
living in Suva, said that she disagrees.
"To say that our past is not relevant in any
situation if foolish we cannot get away
from our past," she said.
"I think it's a non-argument to me to say that
we want to get away from the colonial past.

www.fijitimescanada.com

"Your past is there."

A spokesman for the main opposition
Sodelpa Party, Peter Waqavonovono,
said many people were against changing
the flag, which has been used since Fiji
gained independence.
"Although there are segments of our
population who are bitter about our
British past, we all do not share the same
sentiments and therefore cannot be forced
to accept their ridiculous laws," he said.
Fiji Labour Party President Lavinia
Padarath said parliament was the proper
forum to debate such a change.
"Mr Bainimarama should realise that
in a parliamentary democracy issues of
national importance should be approved
by the house (parliament)," she said.
"The people of Fiji must decide whether

604.510.4088

they want the flag changed and if so, what

the changes should be."
Flag 'flies above ethnic differences'
Ms Mackenzie said she believed the
majority of Fijians still embraced their
current flag design.
"People love it they really feel proud of
it," she said.
"If you ever watch Sevens Rugby, whether
we're winning or losing people are waving
it... and people wear the flag on their
T-shirts in everyday life."
Samson Verma, an expatriate Fijian living
in Paris, has started a Facebook page
called Keep our Fiji Flag.
"That flag, the way it is, contains much of
Fiji's history and it contains much of what
Fiji has gone through in the last 150 years
or so," he said.
"We see that flag as one that flies above all
the ethnic differences in Fiji."
Mr Bainimarama said his competition to
design a new flag would start this month
and run for two months, with the winning
flag to be flown for the first time on
Independence Day in October.
Ms Mackenzie said she was not planning on
entering a new design into the competition.
"I find it very difficult to envisage what
they can choose which will be appropriate
and relevant for everybody... not just now
but for the future," she said.
"A flag is a national symbol that needs to
be very meaningful, so I think it will be
very hard to find good symbols."

Accident Claims Life

An early morning accident in Wairabetia,

Lautoka, has claimed one life and 14 were
treated for injuries at the Lautoka Hospital.
Three vehicles were involved in the
accident.
The Fiji Police Force has confirmed that
the driver of one of the vehicles died at the

scene of the crash at 7.30am.

Police said a truck travelling from Nadi
to Lautoka had failed to negotiate a bend
and hit an on-coming vehicle carrying 13
labourers to Lautoka that also collided
with another vehicle.
Residents living near the accident scene

said they heard a loud bang. Witness

Rajnesh Ram was first at the scene.
When I reached the scene, the driver of
the van was very badly injured, he said.
The witness claims the big truck blew a
tire that probably led to the driver losing
control.
A shocked taxi driver said: Now that
I have seen all this right in front of my
house, I dont feel like driving my taxi. It
is very scary.
Police said the labourers travelling in the
second vehicle were taken to Lautoka
Hospital for treatment.
The scene along the Queens Road bend in
Lautoka also caused a big traffic jam.
The truck was from CJP Group. Police
investigations are continuing.
Meanwhile, in another case, Police are
questioning a 35-year-old man after the
vehicle he was driving allegedly hit a sixyear-old student in Lautoka.
The accident happened at about 3.30pm at
Ram Sami Reddy Road in Kashmir. The
victim is admitted at the Lautoka Hospital.
The family of the Year One student has
confirmed that the victim is now in stable
condition.

Chiefs Tell MP To Apologize

Two chiefs called on the MP who said
kaisi to apologise.
At the same time 16 of the 18 Opposition
members interviewed denied uttering the
derogatory word.
The two not asked were Ratu Viliame
Tagivetaua (sick and was not present in
Parliament) and Ratu Sela Nanovo (was
present but could not be reached to comment).
In iTaukei culture kaisi is the lowest
form of insult. Bau chief, Ratu George
Kadavulevu Cakobau (Junior), and the
Tui Wainunu, Ratu Orisi Baleitavea of
Bua, Vanua Levu, said the person who
said kaisi should be brave enough to
stand up and apologise.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said
in Parliament on Tuesday that a member
of the Opposition had insulted one of his
members by saying Kaisi.

This is not good in this House, he said.

When you walk through the door nobody
really gives two hoots about your title or I
suppose your blue blood. You walk through
there and you enter this establishment and
when you walk out, you pick it up again, your
Ratu, Adi and you out walk with it, he said.
Ratu George backed the PMs comments
saying the iTaukei word should not have
been said inside Parliament.
Ratu George said elected parliamentarians
should be mindful of the fact that
parliamentary debates were aired live on
television and the people who voted for
them were watching.
Whoever said the word should be brave
enough to stand up and publicly apologise
for what he said, Ratu George said.
Ratu Orisi said parliamentarians should
make fruitful contributions to debates.

Mr Bainimarama had made the comments

the context of criticising the Opposition for
using the word kaisi, a derogatory iTaukei

The PMs comments were derogatory,

he said.

New President Will Have Big Shoe To Fill

The search has begun on the successor to
President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.
Ratu Epeli will not be reappointed after
he finishes his two three-year terms in
November.
Section 85, subsection (1), says: The
President holds office for three years,
and is eligible for re-appointment for
one further term of three years, but is not
eligible for reappointment after that.
Sub-section (2) adds: For the purpose of
subsection (1), in determining whether a
person is eligible for appointment or reappointment, any period served before the
commencement of this Constitution shall
be taken into account.
Could this be the year when we will have
our first non-iTaukei President or first
woman President?
Previously, the office of President was
confined to a small group, those nominated by
the now dissolved Great Council of Chiefs.
Now it can be anyone provided they satisfy
the conditions set out in the Constitution.
Aspirants should have had a distinguished
career in national or international life, in
the private and public sector. They should
be Fiji citizens. They are not members or
hold any office in any political party and
not candidates for election to any other
office in the State. They have not been
convicted of any offence under any law in
the six years prior to nomination.
Holders of public office do not have
to resign before accepting nomination.
After appointment, the public office job
automatically ceases.
Nothing in this section prevents the
President from holding public office, by
virtue of his or her appointment as the
President, under any written law, the
Constitution says.
Its provisions broaden the field from
which a presidential nominee can be

found.
Parliament appoints the new President.
The Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama,
and Leader of the Opposition Ro Teimumu
Kepa shall nominate one candidate each
to the Speaker, Jiko Luveni. She will then
conduct a vote by members of Parliament.
The candidate who wins the majority of
votes becomes the President. Mrs Luveni
will officially announce the name of the
new President.
Its a foregone conclusion that Mr
Bainimaramas nominee will become the
President because the PM has the numbers.
But, in case there is a tie after the votes are
counted, Mrs Luveni shall conduct voting
again after 24 hours. Voting will continue
until a clear winner is determined.
If there is no winner after the third
round, the PMs nominee shall become
the President. Mrs Luveni shall then
announce that Parliament has appointed a
new President.
The new President will have a big shoe
to fill. Ratu Epeli has been an excellent

President. He has been a great ambassador

for Fiji. As an anti-HIV/AIDS ambassador,
he has done a sterling job in promoting
public awareness, particularly in schools
in Fiji and in the region.
Ratu Epeli has also spoken out on climate
change and the plight of small island
states who face the threat rising sea levels
because of global warming. He pulls no
punches in challenging industrialised
and developed countries about their
responsibility and commitment to
reducing carbon emissions.
The new President will be someone
who believes and endorses Government
policies.
In Section 82 of the Constitution, it
says: In exercise of his or her powers
and executive authority, the President
acts only on the advice of Cabinet or
a Minister or of some other body or
authority prescribed by this Constitution
for a particular purpose as the body or
authority on whose advice the President
acts in that case.

CWM Hospital Records 938 Diabetes

Related Amputations
A total of 938 diabetes related amputations
have been recorded at the CWM hospital
from 2010 to 2012.
Acting Permanent Secretary of Health
Dr Mecuisela Tuicakau said diabetes has
increased from about 4% in 1985 to 16%
in 2002 and 30% in 2011.
Tuicakau said in Fiji a person with diabetes
loses a foot from untreated infection every
12 and half hours.

He added with the handing over of the

foot equipment today by Diabetes Fiji,
this will help reduce amputations.
Tuicakau said he is certain that the
equipment will go a long way in helping
diabetic patients have long and quality
lives.
He added that in order to have success in
diabetes control, people must change their
behaviour and lifestyle.

Japanese Woman Accuses Indian Tourist

Guide Of Drugging Then Raping Her: Police
A Japanese woman has accused an Indian
tourist guide of drugging and then raping
her in the historic city of Jaipur, police
said, the latest in a series of sex attacks on
foreigners in the country.
The 20-year-old told police the guide
offered to show her around Jaipur on his
motorbike before assaulting her in an
isolated part of the city in the evening.
"The accused offered to drop her at the
hotel in the evening but took her to a
desolate area... and allegedly raped her,"
Dharam Chand Jain, police inspector
general for Jaipur district, told AFP.
The man fled the scene after the woman's
screams were overheard by villagers who
rushed to help, according to local media
reports.
The woman said she was given food laced
with drugs before being attacked by the
man thought to be aged about 25, inspector
general Jain said, adding that blood tests
had been conducted on the woman to
determine the type of drugs used.
The case is the latest in a string of high-

profile sex attacks that have highlighted

high levels of violence against women in
the world's second-most-populous country.
Six men from the eastern city of Kolkata
were charged last month with kidnapping
and gang-raping a 22-year-old Japanese
tourist.
The woman was allegedly held hostage
for a month after travelling to the Buddhist
shrine of Bodh Gaya in neighbouring
Bihar state.
India has faced intense scrutiny over its
efforts to curb violence against women
following the fatal gang rape of a medical
student in New Delhi in December 2012,
which sparked a global outcry.
The Japanese embassy said it was
gathering information about the attack
and could offer no further comment.
Sexual violence hurts tourism
The attack risks handing another blow to
the country's tourism industry. Britain and
France revised their travel advisories for
India last January, warning visitors about
the risk of sexual attacks, after two cases

of foreigners being raped.

"After such incidents tourism is the
first casualty," Gour Kanjilal, executive
director of the Indian Association of Tour
Operators, told AFP.
"We have been issuing instructions to
tourists not to accept help or food from
strangers," he said.
Jaipur and the rest of Rajasthan state draws
thousands of tourists every year to its palaces
and forts built by the former Maharaja rulers,
some in dusty-pink sandstone.
Sex attacks against women from Western
countries have received major media
coverage in India while similar attacks on
local women have drawn only a fraction
of the attention.
Last January, a 51-year-old Danish tourist
was robbed and gang-raped at knifepoint
in Delhi in a case that also grabbed
national and international headlines.
In 2013 a Swiss cyclist holidaying in
the central state of Madhya Pradesh was
robbed and raped by five men, all of
whom were later jailed for life.

Police Discover Nail-Studded Trap In Field

Near B.C. High School

The discovery of a nail-studded trap

concealed on a field near a high school in
Richmond, B.C., has prompted RCMP to
ask the public for help.
Police say a student came across the device
hidden in the grass in a well-trafficked
area near Steveston-London Secondary
School early Sunday afternoon.
"It was meant to harm, either a person
or an animal," said acting Cpl. Dennis
Hwang.
"We have no reports of any people or pets
being hurt at this time, thank goodness."
Hwang described the trap as a series

of nails embedded upright on a plastic,

circular base, measuring about four
centimetres by four centimetres.
The student's parent turned the mechanism
over to police.
"If people do encounter anything similar to
this we would advise them to leave it alone,
maybe protect it or cover it up, and notify
police and we'll come by and investigate
and dispose of it safely," Hwang said.
He said police are concerned about the
possibility of there being more traps.
The Richmond School District conducted
a sweep of the area before classes resumed

Tuesday but found nothing.

Mounties say they have no suspects but
are urging anyone with information to
come forward.

SNAPS of a Chinese farmer's newborn

pig that he claims had a human face and a
penis on its forehead have gone viral.
Friends and neighbours of farmer Tao
Lu had rushed to his property in Yanan
township in Nanning city in southern
China after news spread of the mutant pig.
Local Wu Kung who posted his images
said: "I was one of a dozen people went
there to see the piglet, and it really did
human face and exactly like he said, a
willie growing out of its forehead."
He said it was alive and squealing but
didn't live long after being rejected by
the mother and refusing to feed from a

bottle.
Farmer Tao said he was amazed because
he received phone calls from collectors
prepared to pay a large sum of money for
the animal.
"It was a large litter, and the mutant was
one of the last of 19 piglets to be born.
"All the others were normal, just this one
was really bizarre. It is a shame it died, I
could have got more money for it then for
the rest of the family put together based
on what people were offering me on the
phone."
He said they had wanted to put the mutant
pig on display to attract visitors.

Suffering From Anxiety Disorder? Try Yoga

Exercise and relaxation activities like

yoga can positively impact people with
social anxiety disorders, says a study.
They change the way people perceive
the world, altering their perception so
that they view the environment in a
less threatening, less negative way, the
findings showed.
"We wanted to examine whether people
would perceive their environment as less
threatening after engaging in physical
exercise or after doing a relaxation
technique that is similar to the breathing

exercises in yoga," said Adam Heenan

from Queen's University in Canada.
For his research, Heenan used human
point-light displays - a depiction of a
human that is comprised of a series of dots
representing the major joints.
Human point-light displays are depthambiguous and because of this an observer
looking at the display could see it as either
facing towards them or facing away.
"We found that people who either walked
or jogged on a treadmill for 10 minutes
perceived these ambiguous figures as

facing towards them (the observer) less

often than those who simply stood on the
treadmill," Heenan said.
The same was true when people performed
progressive muscle relaxation, he noted.
This is important because anxious people
display a bias to focus on more threatening
things in their environment.
In fact, some researchers think that this

People who are anxious focus on anxietyinducing things and thus become more

Tips To Manage High BP Without Pills

Hypertension on the high? Here are top tips to get it down and keep it down.

Seven in 10 adults are at a greater risk of

stroke or heart attack because their blood
pressure is too high. Desk jobs, lack of
exercise and eating salty fast foods have
contributed to the problem, even among
the young. If your level is consistently at
or above 140mmHg/ 90mmHg (referred
to as 140 over 90). The 140 figure is the
systolic pressure the pressure reached
when the heart forces the blood around the
body and 90 is the diastolic pressure
the lowest pressure that occurs between
heartbeats when the heart relaxes.
1. Go for a weekly jog
Jogging for just an hour a week can
increase your life expectancy by six years,
according to a Copenhagen City Heart
cardiovascular study of around 20,000
men and women aged from 20 to 93.
Researchers believe jogging delivers
multiple health benefits, improving
oxygen uptake and lowering blood
pressure, as well as many more benefits.
However, any physical activity can help
lower blood pressure by strengthening the
heart so it can pump more blood with less
effort, thereby decreasing the force on
the arteries. Power walking can be just as
effective as jogging.
2. Enjoy yoghurt
Just one small pot a day can reduce
your chances of developing high blood
pressure by a third, according to a think
naturally occurring calcium can make
blood vessels more supple, enabling them
to expand slightly and keep pressure low.
They found those who ate a 120g pot daily
were 31 per cent less likely to develop
high blood pressure over a 15-year period
than those who did not.
3. Go bananas
Eating potassium-rich foods, such as
bananas, and reducing salt intake could
save thousands of lives every year.
Potassium is an important mineral that

www.fijitimescanada.com

controls the balance of fluids in the body

and helps to lower blood pressure.
4. Down with salt
Salt draws in fluid, raising the volume and
pressure of blood in your arteries. But it's
not just the salt cellar you have to worry
about processed foods such as biscuits,
breakfast cereals, takeaways and ready
meals contain 80 per cent of the salt we
consume. Check labels: more than 1.5g
salt per 100g is a lot, but less than 0.3mg
per 100g is a little.
5. Lose weight
Research has shown that dropping just a
few kilos can have a substantial impact on
your blood pressure. Excess weight makes
your heart work harder and this strain can
lead to high blood pressure.
6. Don't smoke
The nicotine in cigarettes stimulates your
body to produce adrenaline, making your
heart beat faster and raises your blood
pressure, making your heart work harder.
7. Work less
Regularly putting in 40 hours per week at
the office raises your risk of hypertension
by 14 per cent. The risk rises with overtime.
Compared with those who worked fewer
than 40 hours a week, workers who
clocked up more than 51 hours were 29

604.510.4088

per cent more likely to have high blood

pressure. Overtime makes it hard to
exercise and eat healthily, say researchers.
So try to down tools with enough time
to relax in the evening and eat a healthy
supper. Set a message on your computer
as a reminder to go home.
8. Seek help for snoring
Loud, incessant snoring is a symptom of
obstructive sleep apnea. And more than
half of those with this have blood pressure
significantly higher than expected for
their age and general health.
Cutting out cigarettes and alcohol and
losing weight will help.
9. Switch to decaf
Caffeine consumption of 500mg, roughly
three cups, increased blood pressure by
three points. Effects lasted until bedtime.
Scientists say that caffeine can raise blood
pressure by tightening blood vessels and
magnifying the effects of stress.
10. Think beetroot
A study found drinking a 250ml cup of the
juice can cut blood pressure readings in
those with high blood pressure by around
seven per cent. It's thought the effect is
produced by beetroot's naturally high
levels of nitrate. Eating other-rich foods
cabbage and spinach might also help

Teen Suicide - What Parents Need To Know

Teen suicide can be prevented. Know the

risk factors, the warning signs and the
steps you can take to protect your teen.

Is your teen at risk of suicide? While no

teen is immune, there are factors that can
make some adolescents more vulnerable
than others. Understand how to tell if your
teen might be suicidal and where to turn
for help and treatment.
What makes teens vulnerable to
suicide?
Most teens who attempt or commit
suicide have a mental health condition
or substance abuse problem. As a result,
they have trouble coping with the stress
of being a teen, such as dealing with
rejection, failure, breakups and family
turmoil. They might also be unable to see
that they can turn their lives around
and that suicide is a permanent solution to
a temporary problem.
What are the risk factors for teen
suicide?
Factors that increase the risk of teen
suicide include:
-Having a psychiatric disorder, such as
depression
-A history of suicide attempts or a family
history of suicidal behavior
-A family history of mood disorder
-A history of physical or sexual abuse
-Exposure to violence, such as being
injured or threatened with a weapon
Other factors, when combined with the
above, also can increase the risk of teen
suicide, including:
-Access to means, such as firearms
-Loss or conflict with close friends or
family members
-Use of alcohol or drugs
-Becoming pregnant
-Social isolation
-Exposure to suicide
What role do antidepressants play?
Some studies have shown a possible
link between starting treatment with an
antidepressant and an increased risk of
suicide. The Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) requires manufacturers of all
antidepressants to include a warning
stating that antidepressants might increase
suicide risk in children, adolescents and
young adults.
However, the link between antidepressants
and suicidal thinking isn't clear and
withholding appropriate treatment also
increases the risk of suicide. To be safe,
anyone who starts taking an antidepressant
should be watched closely for signs of
suicidal thinking.
What are the warning signs that a teen
might be suicidal?
Warning signs of teen suicide might

www.fijitimescanada.com

include:
-Talking about or hinting at suicide
for example, making statements such as
"I'm going to kill myself," or "I won't be a
problem for you much longer"
-Talking about or writing about death
-Increased use of alcohol or drugs
-Feeling purposeless or hopeless
-Withdrawing from social contact
-Mood swings
-Changing normal routine, including
eating or sleeping patterns
-Acting recklessly or aggressively
-Giving away belongings or getting affairs
in order when there is no other logical
explanation for why this is being done
-Developing personality changes or being
severely anxious or agitated
-Unexplained cuts or burns caused by
self-injury
What should I do if I suspect my teen is
suicidal?
If you think your teen is in immediate
danger, take him or her to the emergency
room or call 911, your local emergency
number or a suicide hot line number
such as the National Suicide Prevention
Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (800-2738255).
If you suspect that your teen might be
thinking about suicide, talk to him or her
immediately. Don't be afraid to use the
word suicide. Talking about suicide won't
plant ideas in your teen's head. Ask your
teen to talk about his or her feelings and
listen carefully. Don't dismiss his or her
problems or get angry. Instead, reassure
your teen of your love. Remind your teen
that he or she can work through whatever is
going on and that you're willing to help.
Also, be sure to seek medical help for your
teen. Ask your teen's doctor to guide you.
Teens who are feeling suicidal usually
need to see a psychiatrist or psychologist
experienced in diagnosing and treating
children with mental health problems.

604.510.4088

The doctor will want to get an accurate

picture of what's going on from a variety
of sources, such as the teen, parents or
guardians, other people close to the teen,
school reports, and previous medical or
psychiatric evaluations.
What can I do to prevent teen suicide?
You can take steps to help protect your
teen. For example:
Address depression or anxiety. Don't
wait for your teen to come to you with
his or her problems. If your teen is sad,
anxious or appears to be struggling ask
what's wrong and offer your help.
Pay attention. If your teen is thinking
about suicide, he or she is likely displaying
some warning signs. Listen to what your
child is saying and watch how he or she is
acting. Never shrug off threats of suicide
as teen melodrama.
Share your feelings. Make sure your teen
realizes that everyone feels sad sometimes
including you. Try to get him or her to
see that things will get better.
Discourage isolation. Encourage your
teen to spend time with friends and family
rather than alone. If he or she says no,
however, don't push.
Encourage physical activity. Even
light physical activity can help reduce
depression symptoms.
Support the treatment plan. If your
teen is undergoing treatment for suicidal
behavior, remind him or her that it
might take some time to feel better.
Help your teen follow his or her doctor's
recommendations. Also, encourage your
teen to participate in fun, low-stress
activities that will help him or her rebuild
confidence.
Safely store firearms, alcohol and
medications. Access to means can increase
the risk of teen suicide.
Remember, teen suicide can be prevented.
If you're worried about your teen, talk to
him or her and seek help right away.

Bebefits Of Turmeric
While many of us are aware of the
numerous benefits of this deep, exotic
yellow spice, few incorporate turmeric
in our daily use, other than sprinkling a
little of it in our daal and subzi. Turmeric,
a member of the ginger family, has been
used for healing by Ayurvedic means,
since time immemorial. Turmeric has
anti-inflammatory properties, and is an
excellent antiseptic. In addition, it is great
for the skin. So before investing in an
expensive beauty product, take a look in
your kitchen.
The turmeric you get in packets is not the
pure form, which is why it is best that you
try and find someone who supplies pure
turmeric powder, or use the root and make
your own paste.
Here are just a few of the various
benefits of turmeric:
Reduces Pigmentation
Plagued with pigmentation? Turmeric can
help even out your skin tone and colour.
Simply apply a little turmeric mixed with
cucumber juice or lemon to the affected
area. Leave on for fifteen minutes or
more, and wash off. Do this everyday, and
gradually you will notice your skin colour
returning to normal.

Strengthens Bones
Drink a quarter glass turmeric juice
every night, with milk. The best way to
have this is to take a inch piece of
turmeric and boil it with half a glass of
milk. Once the milk has turned yellow,
remove from fire, let it cool slightly,
and sip this. This will cure numerous
ailments. Women especially should
drink this every night, as it strengthens
bones and reduces the risk of developing
osteoporosis.
Softens the Body
Turmeric is a wonderful body scrub, which
is why Indian brides apply a turmeric and
gram flour (besan) mix to their entire body,
the morning of the wedding. It leaves
your skin soft, smooth and glowing. Of
course, a single application will not really
make that much of a difference. Do this
regularly, and watch your skin change for
the better - much better.
Makes the Skin Supple
If you are planning a pregnancy, apply a
mixture of turmeric and malai or turmeric
and curd to your stomach and waist
before going for a bath. Leave it on for
fifteen minutes, and wash off. If desired,
you could even apply this mixture after

bathing. After you have washed off the

soap, apply the malai and haldi mixture,
leave it on for five minutes, and wash
off only with water. Gently, wipe your
stomach with the towel. The sooner you
start this routine, the more supple and
elastic your skin will become, and after
giving birth, you will not be left with
unsightly stretch marks.
Inhibits Cell Damage
Turmeric is an excellent anti-oxidant,
which essentially means that it stabilizes
unstable oxygen molecules. These are
known as free radicals, and are what cause
damage to cells, leading to ageing and
various other diseases such as cancer.
Fights Diarrhoea
Turmeric fights the bacteria that causes
diarrhoea, so the next time your stomach
starts 'running', reach for some haldi.
German health authorities have officially
declared turmeric herbal tea to be a cure
for loose stools.
All around the world you can now avail
of turmeric in the form of teas, capsules,
tinctures, lotions, ointments and powder.
However, here, you have access to
turmeric in its purest form, so make the
most use of it.

Foods To Help You Stay Hydrated

As the mercury levels remain high, here are some natural foods that will help you stay hydrated and healthy
As temperatures remain high, the
body tends to lose a lot of water. The
body suffers if this loss is not suitably
compensated. Apart from intake of water,
which is a must, there are various fruits
and veggies with high water contents that
will surely help to cool the system and
keep you fresh and hydrated.
Cool As A Cucumber

Cucumber contains potassium, which

helps maintain the mineral balance
in the body. They are rich in a lipid
component called 'sterol' that can bring
down cholesterol levels. It's the skin of
the cucumber that contains the highest
level of sterols. So think twice before
you peel away valuable nutrition. Lastly,

www.fijitimescanada.com

cucumbers are also extremely low in

calories making the vegetable a dieter's
dream.
Juicy Watermelon

Have some juicy, freshly split watermelon.

Low on calories and high on water
content, this fruit is your best bet when
dealing with the sweltering heat.
Sweet Strawberry
Not only do strawberries rank high in
water content, the fruit is also packed with
Vitamin C, the anti-oxidant which keeps
ligaments strong and hastens skin repair
including sun-burns.

604.510.4088

Tangy Tomato
Apart from combating cancer and a host
of other ailments, tomatoes are also
among the most-hydrated of vegetables.
Besides this, Lycopene, the chemical,
which gives tomato its distinct red colour,
protects skin against UV damage, which
one is more prone to in summer.

Why Your Moisturizer Isn't Working

And steps to solve the problem

Are you pursuing a more balanced

lifestyle? Don't forget to include one
of the bodys most important balancing
actstaming your skin. Achieving the
perfect pH balance will ease dry winter
skin, enhance the effectiveness of antiaging products, and, according to a recent
report, keep wrinkles at bay.
You body operates at a neutral pH balance
of 7. But skin is a little differentits
protective barrier, composed of dead skin
cells, fatty acids, and lipids, works in a
more acidic environment, at a pH of 5.5.
When the balance is too neutral (at, say, a
6 or 7) that barrier breaks down, allowing
allergens, pollutants, and bacteria to enter
skin, while letting precious moisture
escape. But when skin is at an ideal pH,
its optimized to retain moisture and
protect against environmental threats that
can age you prematurely. In fact, a study
found that, over eight years, women with
more alkaline skin experienced a greater
number of fine lines and crows feet than
those with a more acidic balance.
How can you tell if your skins pH is out
of whack? Theres no surefire test, but
if youve got flaky, scaly, or even itchy
skin, there might be something amiss.
When your skin is out of balance, it cant
perform normal functions like healthy
self-exfoliation. Instead of shedding dead

www.fijitimescanada.com

skin cells, it goes into protective mode

and holds onto themand thats the dry
skin process.
More from Prevention: How To Prevent
Wrinkles
If that isnt reason enough to get your skin
in shape, your skins pH also affects antiaging products. You want to apply your
moisturizers to a surface of the right pH
so they can actually work. Those powerful
ingredients wont have the opportunity to
really penetrate the outer layer and can
become irritating due to a broken down
skin barrier.
Here are some tips to keep your skins pH
balance in check:
Dont wash your face with soap. Real
soapthink your husbands favorite
green baris an alkaline substance that
strips the skin of oils, even the good
ones. Washing with soap raises our skins
pH by at least one point, and can take
hours to get back down to 5.5. Swap out
your basic bar for a non-soap cleanser,
a beauty bar, or any cleanser without
surfactants.
Turn down the temperature. That
tightness you feel after a nice long scrub?
Thats skins response to its protective
layer being stripped away. Use lukewarm
water and focus on getting a good rinse
instead.

604.510.4088

Put away the washcloth. Washcloths are

too abrasive for your face, especially the
gentle skin on your cheeks. Your hands or
a gentle cleansing brush work just fine.
Use products with active ingredients.
If looking for clinically proven products
that contain vitamins and bioactive
antioxidants to promote cell turnover.
Pomegranate, tea, vitamin Athese
things simply savage free radicals.

Anupam Kher Competing With Robert De

Niro And Al Pacino

With 428 films to his credit, Anupam

Kher says he is not satisfied as an actor
and wants to have a career like Hollywood
legends Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.
The 59-year-old 'Baby' actor, who was
in the capital to attend a session with the
students of National Institute of Drama
(NSD), said he always keeps a check on
De Niro and Pacino's films.

"My competition is not with Bollywood

actors. I compete with Robert De Niro and
Al Pacino. I always check what they are
doing...," said Kher, who worked with De
Niro in David O Russell's 'Silver Linings
Playbook'.
The NSD graduate recalled his days in
the theatre college and said he always
considered his batch mates -- Anang Desai

and Satish Kaushik -- more as "enemies"

than friends.
"As a student, one should be hungry, lonely
and frustrated to learn. Students, who come
here, often get busy in making friends and
building relationships. "When I joined
NSD, Anang Desai and Satish Kaushik
were my friends but I always considered
them my enemies because we all will be
competing for one role," Kher said.
The actor got his first break in Mahesh
Bhatt's 'Saaransh', where he played a
character beyond his years. His stellar
performance as retired middle class
Maharashtrian man grieving the death of
his son won him his first Filmfare best
actor award. It was also India's official
entry to the Oscars.
"When I did the iconic scene of me getting
the news of my son's death and I had to
perform the last rites, there was only one
thing in my mind.
"I was thinking continuously that if I don't
perform well then my career will have a
full stop and I have to go back to Shimla.
While I was thinking of that, I gradually
became emotional and gave my best shot
in one cut," he said.
Kher, whose acting school completed
10 years, is also planning to teach the
NSD students. "I will definitely come
to take classes. I love teaching because
I feel teaching and acting are the two
professions where a teacher gets to learn
every day. I feel I am a better teacher than
actor," he said.

How 'Haider' Emerged As Boon For Tabu

After 'Haider', Tabu seems to have gotten

back into the game. The talented actress,
who is now out of her long hibernation,
was seen shaking a leg or two at the party
circuit too.
She will soon be seen in Nishikant
Kamat's Hindi remake of the South Indian
film 'Drishyam', which has Ajay Devgan
as her co-star.
She will play a cop in the film. Tabu is said
to be also in talks with AR Murugadoss
for his action film with Sonakshi Sinha.
Also in her kitty is Meghna Gulzar's film
'Nyodda' based on the Arushi Talwar
murder case. Playing mother to Shahid
Kapoor in 'Haider' has got her diverse
roles.

Dallas Stars Captain Jamie Benn Apologizes

To Vancouver Canucks Sedin Twins For
Offensive Comments About Them

The Dallas Stars say Captain Jamie Benn

has reached out to apologize to Henrik
and Daniel Sedin after making offensive
comments about the twins on a radio
program.
Benn and teammate Tyler Seguin made
disparaging remarks about the Vancouver
Canucks stars rooming together on the
road while on a Dallas sports talk show
on Monday.
The Dallas Stars have the utmost respect
for the contributions that the [Sedins]
have made to both the game and to their
community over the course of their great
careers, Stars president Jim Lites said in
a brief statement Wednesday.
There was no mention of a similar apology
from Seguin.
Long before the Canucks walked into
their house of horrors in Minny, and in a
place far, far away, a couple of NHL stars
were imbibed with idiocy as an on-air
discussion turned toward the Sedins.
If the Sedins havent earned your respect by
now, its on you, not them. They have not

had great years. They have had great careers.

They have endured physical pain, massively
disappointing losses, and, of course, a
shocking amount of ridicule generated by
fans, media and, yes, their peers.
The oldest, lamest, most worn-out dig
on them is the sisters slur. Its a little
heartbreaking I still have to write about
this in 2015. If the Sedins still get it, what
about the kids in minor hockey? Peewee
soccer? High school band?
Obviously, when it comes to the Sedins, it
continues to follow them.
They are not the only stars who have this
type of attack directed at them. Crosby
has been called Cindy. Even Pronger got
it, called Chrissy. As though being female
is inherently wrong or inferior.
Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin, of the
Dallas Stars, tapped into what comes off
as a similar form of bullying at the end of
a long interview on something called the
Bob and Dan show.
From what I can tell, the interview was
taken off the web site after some of

Canuck twitter heard it and demanded

apologies from Benn and Seguin. Not sure
on that. But it was here.
In the late stages of the interview, the
topic turned to rooming on the road. Benn
and his brother play on the same team but
he explains they get separate rooms.
A host says he thinks the Sedins stay
together still, and Benn follows that line
up stating:
Who knows what else they do together?
Not a great moment. Jokes follow, as the
hosts claim the way the Sedins cut their
hair and present themselves are examples
of what brothers should never do.
And Seguin, in loose Seguin fashion,
concludes it with this:
Theyre odd as s.
Sure if odd is mature, responsible,
accountable, upstanding community
members who love their team and
city equally, while going through life
respecting every person they encounter.
Yes, if thats your definition odd, then
they are as odd as s.

Fiji Faces Germany In FIFA U20 World Cup

Opener

Fiji Under-20 side faces a demanding

debut in the FIFA U-20 World Cup, with
their first match a baptism of fire against
European champions Germany.
Fiji FAs Technical Director Ravinesh
Kumar relished the prospect of a dream
opener against Germany.
I would say it's an honour for Fiji to play a
nation that is the current world champions
- we're in a pool with Germany who are
worlds number one now. Looking at the
world rankings, Fiji is 191 so we're very
lucky to be playing the Germans.
We were quite pleased with the draw
as officials as this is one of the lifetime
achievements for Fiji football to play Germany.
We know that Uzbekistan and Honduras are
good teams as well and we will try to prepare
ourselves well to compete at this tournament.
We will prepare as best we can for what
lies ahead.
We have brought in a professional coach,
Frank Farina, and he is helping us and
now we're going in for tours to Myanmar
where we'll be playing Uzbekistan. And
we have some more tours and games lines
up against teams that have qualified for

www.fijitimescanada.com

the World Cup.

Of course warm-up matches with
Uzbekistan and Myanmar will be a good
testing ground for us in terms of where we
stand because we know Uzbekistan has
played quite a few FIFA U-20 World Cups
and in the last FIFA U-20 World Cup they
defeated New Zealand 5-0, he said.
Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel says its a
good pool as we have two Asian teams,
Honduras and Uzbekistan and European

604.510.4088

champion Germany.
We shouldnt be complaining but I would
say its going to be great competition.
New Zealand 2015 will be the 20th edition
of the U-20 World Cup, a tournament
already famous for helping launch the
careers of Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho,
Lionel Messi and many more of the game's
all-time greats. It will be held between 30
May and 20 June in seven cities across the
country's north and south islands.
