STANDARD
PART 1 - ACQUISITION

under the authority

of the Defence

Industry

Specific inquiries regarding the application

of this Standard to Requests for Tender or
contracts should be addressed to the Ordering Authority named in the Request for Tender
or to the Quality Assurance Authority named in the contract, as appropriate.
This Standard is mandatory

for use by the Navy, Army and Air Force.

PART 1 of this Standard supersedes

DEF(AUST)5085A PART 1.

This Standard is divided into two PARTS to facilitate its easy use. DEF(AUST)5085B PART 1
(hereafter referred to as PART l), deals with the acquisition of engineering drawings; and
DEF(AUST)50856 PART 2, (hereafter referred to as PART 2), deals with the preparation of
drawings, and is based on MIL-STD-100.

INTERNATIONAL

STANDARDISATION

This document takes cognizance of US Military Specification MIL-STD-100, and also of the
work done by the ABCA Navy, Army and Air Force activities in respect to engineering
drawing practices i.e. Navy Field 2, Army QWG-ES and Air Force ASCC WP 104. Therefore
when revision of this document is being undertaken, care should be taken to ensure that
the degree of international standardisation
that it affords is not lost.

by providing layout drawings supported by detail drawings depicting
required tolerances.

Items Covered by Existing Specifications and Standards

Drawings shall not be prepared or submitted for items that are defined by Defence,

Reference Documents
Contractor documents referenced on drawings shall be furnished as part of the

not provide the essential technical information the contractors subordinate
reference shall be provided to the extent necessary to meet the technical
disclosure requirements of the level ordered. However, technical manuals,
procedural manuals, maintenance manuals and company drafting manuals are not
considered reference documents.

Clarity and Legibility

Drawings (including those covered in paragraph 4.2) shall be of such clarity that,
when reproduced as microfilm, they will produce copies conforming to the legrbility
requirements specified in AS 1203. These provisions do not apply to Level 1
