EDITORIAL | First Elder Kenneth Gittens - Editor

Welcome to the very first
edition of Konnect a
Newsletter of the King
Street Seventh-day Adventist Church. Konnect aims
to keep you informed of
the work of the local
church as it impacts its
members and the wider
community of which it
forms a part.
For several years now
the King Street Church has
been actively involved in
missionary outreach in
terms of crusades, health
fairs, open-air meetings,
banquets, overseas and
local camps, Community

Guests Days, Mens Fellowship and Womens Ministries retreats, to mention

a few. All these activities
have either gone unnoticed,
undocumented or untold.
This Newsletter is an
attempt to prevent this
from ever happening again.
More importantly, however, its aim, among other
things, is to accelerate the
spiritual development of
each member, keep everyone current on the
Churchs activities, and
encourage all our members
to participate and become
more involved in these

activities.
Our people must not be
destroyed for a lack of
knowledge. While this
Newsletter will not be the
font of all knowledge, it
will include, from time to
time, articles which will
touch upon spiritual
growth, healthy living and
social interaction.
We trust that you will
enjoy reading our first edition and look forward to
your meaningful comments
on how we might be able to
improve and make this a
better and more informative Newsletter.

Guess Whats Cooking |

Sis. Joyce Marshall - Health Ministries

One of the students displaying

their plaited bread.

The King Street SDA Church

conducted a Vegetarian Cooking class which commenced on
March 18 and ran for eight
weeks. The class arose out of
the desire of the new converts
who wanted to know how to
prepare more healthy meals
after hearing about the benefits
of lifestyle changes and a plantbased diet.
The class started with
twelve persons nine females
and three males. Within two
weeks that number increased

to sixteen.
The first weeks menu was
Red Bean Roast, Spanish Rice
and Tossed Salad. Bread was
made in the second week. Each
student was required to make
his or her own bread. They
had the option of making a
loaf, a bun or plaited bread.
Students enjoyed the cooking classes which were taught
by Sisters Selma Henry and
Joyce Marshall. The students
seemed to have heeded the
admonition of E.G. White who

wrote that: The art of cooking is not a small matter.

This should be regarded as
the most valuable of all the
arts because it is so closely
connected to life. (Child
Guidance page 372)

Cancer Awareness and Prevention Forum |

Bro. Dudley Fullerton - Personal Ministries

Dr. Natalie Greaves leading the

discussion with the adults.

The Cancer Awareness

Forum, held on Sunday,
March 24, 2013 was extremely
well delivered, and equally well
received.
The presenters are all
experts in their field.
Dr. Greaves is a medical doctor who specializes in cancer
prevention and cancer treatment. Sister Chase-Grant is a
trained druggist of several
years experience, and
Dr. Miller serves as the Director of Research for the Barbados Community College and
specializes in Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products.
It was the hope of the
Personal Ministries Department that more members of
the community and the church
would have availed themselves

of the information that was so

ably presented. This was not
the case.
However, several women,
both from the Church and the
community, made themselves
available and patiently sat and
waited for the breast screening
test. In this regard we want to
thank the Cancer Society for
making the van available to us.
A similar event is slated for
the middle of June 2013. This,
however, will focus on the
control and reversal of Diabetes and Hypertension through
diet and exercise. This event
will be taken into the heart of
the community.

ALLO ALOE | Dr. Samuel Miller

Aloe Vera plant

Taken orally, aloe

also appears to work
on heartburn, arthritis
and rheumatism pain
and asthma.

Aloe is well known for its

healing properties. Tradition
shows that it can be taken
orally and used topically as a
component of dressings to
facilitate healing of most
kinds of skin wounds, burns,
or scalds there is even reference to speeding recovery
time after surgery. It can be
applied to blisters, insect
bites, rashes, sores, herpes,
urticaria, athlete's foot, fungus, vaginal infections, conjunctivitis, sties, allergic reactions, and dry skin. The raw
plant is best, but commercial
preparations can also be
used, especially for taking
orally, as the plant in its natural state has a horrible
taste. Other topical uses
include acne, sunburn, frostbite (it appears to prevent
decreased blood flow), shingles, screening out x-ray radiation, psoriasis, preventing
scarring, rosacea, warts,
wrinkles from aging, and
eczema.
Internally, aloe is showing
real promise in the fight
against AIDS. The virus has
become undetectable in
some patients who used it on
a regular basis, due to its
immune system stimulant
properties. It also seems to
help prevent opportunistic
infections in cases of HIV and
AIDS. It appears to be of
help in cancer patients
(including lung cancer) by
activating the white blood
cells and promoting growth
of non-cancerous cells. The
National Cancer Institute has
included aloe vera in their
recommendations for increased testing because of
these apparent cancer fight-

ing properties. Taken orally,

aloe also appears to work on
heartburn, arthritis and
rheumatism pain and asthma.
Studies have shown that it
has an effect on lowering
blood sugar levels in diabetics. Other situations in
which it appears to work
when taken internally include
congestion, intestinal worms,
indigestion, stomach ulcers,
colitis, hemorrhoids, liver
problems such as cirrhosis
and hepatitis, kidney infections, urinary tract infections,
prostate problems, and as a
general detoxifier. Lastly,
many people who take aloe
internally report just feeling
better overall, which is in and
of itself something of a testament to its remarkable properties.
Commercially, aloe can be
found in pills, sprays, ointments, lotions, liquids, drinks,
jellies, and creams, to name a
few of the thousands of
products available. Unfortunately, the aloe industry is
virtually unregulated, and
some products that advertise
aloe content actually have
little to none. Therefore, if
you are embarking on a regimen with aloe, you should
become an avid reader of
ingredients. Look for the
word aloe to appear near the
top of the ingredient list first
and foremost, then follow
the guidelines below:
Sunburn treatments - 20%
or more aloe content
Creams & Ointments 20% or more aloe content

Juices - 95% or more aloe

content
Beverages - 50% or more
aloe content
Drinks - 10% or more aloe
content
Capsules - 5-10% or more
aloe content
As far as dosages are concerned, start small and work
your way up to a therapeutic
dose. Juices are a good way
to start, and pills are probably the worst way to go with
aloe. Aloe pulp is 95% water,
and if you consider the process of drying this, then sticking it back together into a pill
form, you can see why pills
are probably not the best
way to go. Also, give your
regimen time to work. Sometimes it takes a couple of
months for you to see the
real effects of aloe treatments, so don't give up too
soon.
Aloe is safe when used in
moderation, but there are a
few contraindications. If you
have a heart problem and use
any kind of digitalis medication, consult your doctor
before using any aloe product
internally, as the interaction
may cause irregular heartbeat. Avoid aloe preparations if you are pregnant,
breast-feeding, or menstruating, as it can cause uterine
contractions.

Commentary | A STUDENTS PERSPECTIVE OF THE COOKING CLASS

- Sis. Cynthia Headley
Today, more people seem
to be gravitating towards
plant-based foods as part of
a healthy life-style diet.
Such a diet can help reduce
the chances of developing
chronic diseases such as
diabetes, obesity, high
cholesterol, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and heart
disease.
As we are living a longer
and more stressful life,
changing to a healthier plant
based diet is one way in
which we may try to avoid
these chronic diseases and
complications associated
with the consumption of
processed and nutritionally
deficient foods. Foods that
tend to be cheaper and
more readily available, but
are more harmful to our
bodies.
I decided to sign up for
the healthy lifestyle cooking
class because I wanted to
make a meaningful difference in the way I took care
of my health and that of my
family.
Another reason I chose
this class was that I am convinced that one should not
have to spend money on
medication to treat diseases
that could be avoided if
healthy meals are prepared
in the first place. I also
wanted to be able to teach
my family and friends that
the alternatives to how they
now eat are far less costly
in the long run not only in

terms of money, but in

health.
The class did help. We
were taught that in addition
to avoiding chronic diseases, other benefits from
healthy eating and cooking
are higher energy levels, a
greater sense of physical
wellbeing, and the ability to
better focus and concentrate.
The foods that would
help us to achieve this are
vegetables, fresh herbs,
fruits, whole grains, beans,
lentils, nuts and seeds.
These foods contain plenty
of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber. There
are also some healthy oils
and fats such as olive, coconut and flax seed oil that
may aid in a well balanced
diet. These oils however
should be used in very limited quantities. The use of
margarine should be
avoided. Butter in very
small quantities is preferred
if such fats are used at all.
It was also pointed out
that, instead of obtaining
our protein from meat,
excellent sources of protein
are to be found in soy, and
soy products such as tofu,
as well as in grains, beans,
nuts, and certain seeds.
While not a plant-based
food, eggs are also a good
source of protein and these
may be incorporated in a
healthy dietary regime. Eggs
can be substituted in some

recipes by eggbeaters and

tofu. Similarly, fish is a good
source of protein and can
be included in a healthful
diet although some may
wish to avoid animal products completely.
There are some foods
that we should try to avoid
using in our cooking. These
may include all cheeses,
excessive sugar and salt. A
diet without these more
harmful foods is not a nutritionally deficient one and
many people have successfully excluded them from
their lifestyle.
My experience of the
healthy lifestyle cooking
class was a rewarding and
enjoyable one, and I will
encourage as many as possible to join such classes in
the future.

to reduce the
chances of developing

as diabetes, obesity,

arthritis and heart
disease.

THE WORLDS GREATEST CLIMACTIC EVENT by Pastor Haldaine Greaves

www.christianfilmdatabase.com

Nations that
cannot even afford
to feed their people
squander their most
precious resources
pitting their citizens
against each other.

Sergei Torop - Self proclaimed

Messiah, known by his many followers as Vissarian Christ.

In Mark 13:7,8 Jesus made

this remarkable prediction
And when ye shall hear of
wars and rumours of wars,
be ye not troubled: for such
things must needs be; but the
end shall not be yet.
For nation shall rise against
nation, and kingdom against
kingdom: and there shall be
earthquakes in divers places,
and there shall be famines
and troubles: these are the
beginning of sorrows.
Many people today, including world leaders, are afraid.
Since the entrance of sin,
people have been living in a
climate of fear and war. But
never in history has there
been so much tension and
violence as there is in our
day.
Two terrible conflicts
shook the past century World War I which caused
the loss of ten million lives
and World War II where
fifty-five million people died.
The climate of war and distrust is part of our daily lives.
One has only to consider
what is happening on the
Korean Peninsula. The conflict between North and
South Korea; the tension
between North Korea and
Israel; the almost daily
rhetoric of North Korea to
the United States and the
United States rhetoric to
North Korea are but a few
examples of the tension and
distrust that we witness today.
Of the fifty-six important
armed conflicts recorded in
the past decade or so, only

three of these involved one

country against another. All
the others were essentially
internal struggles civil wars.
It is also interesting that
while wars between wealthy
countries dominated the first
half of the past century, the
majority of the conflicts of
today takes place among the
poorest nations of the world.
Nations that cannot even
afford to feed their people
squander their most precious
resources pitting their citizens against each other.
Many people felt that
World War II was the war to
end all wars. They did not
heed that portion of scripture that states: For when
they shall say peace and
safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them
The words of Jesus continue to be fulfilled on a daily
basis. In addition to predicting wars, Jesus said that there
would be an increase in the
number of false prophets
prior to His second return
to earth.
There is, for example, a
certain Galina Oshepkova, a
divorce mother of two who
said she saw and heard Vissarian state that he had to
return to Earth because people had forgotten the words
and teachings he left 2,000
years ago. Miss Oshepkova
said, she felt her heart
pounding and knew that
what she had heard was
true. She exclaimed, he
really is the one, he really is
the second incarnation!
Vissarian is a former Russian

soldier. His real name is

Sergei Torop. He is described as wearing a tunic;
having long brown hair and a
timid smile. He boldly says
that he is the Christ who has
come back to save humanity.
He does not say this to
everyone - just to his disciples who number in the
thousands. They believe that
he is, indeed, the reincarnation of Christ and the giver
of life.
We are truly living in the
end time. Not only do we
hear of wars and rumours of
wars; not only is there a
rapid increase in the number
of those who claim to be the
promised Messiah, but there
are serious social changes in
our attitude to sin and evil.
The so-called alternative lifestyle has been accepted as
the norm in many areas of
the world today; wrong is
often considered to be right
and right wrong.
In this paradigm shift we
must be constantly cognizant
of the outstanding biblical
promise of the coming of
Jesus. It must be the focus of
attention to both the believer
and the non-believer.
There is no time for delay
because there is no time left.
Christ Jesus is coming. Now
is the time for us to seal our
decision for Him.
Be confidently assured that
Christs Second Coming is
the worlds greatest climactic
event. Will you be ready for
it?

The Power of the Cross Crusade

Pastor Granville Hinds preaching

to the attentive congregation.

The Power of the Cross

Crusade Evangelistic series
was held from January 20
to February 23, 2013 in
Barbarees Hill, opposite the
Carters General store. It was
a joint venture of gospel outreach by the King Street,
Advent Avenue and Goodland
SDA churches of the City
Central District.
The main speaker was Evangelist Pastor Granville Hinds.
He is the Ministerial Intern for
the district. Since January
2012 he has been serving
under the supervision of
Senior District Pastor,
Haldaine Greaves. The five
week programme was part of
the on-going sharing of the

Word of God by the Seventh

Day Adventist Church. During
the series of services held
nightly, a number of subjects
were studied from the Bible.
Some of topics presented
were as follows:

The Reliability &

Relevancy of the Bible
The Second Coming of
Jesus Christ
The Creation of the
World
The Sabbath
Healthy Living
Marriage
The State of the Dead
Heaven & Hell
Last Day Events

The Final Destruction of

Evil
Throughout the Crusade
there were health lectures,
features for the children, bible
quizzes, bible issues and
answers, free literature, spirited singing and inspiring testimonies. With the use of visual
aids such as PowerPoint Presentations in a bible teaching
format, the audience was taken
on a journey through the bible.
There were constant visits
by guests from the surrounding
communities as well as other
church members. At the conclusion of the Crusade twentyone individuals gave their lives
to Jesus Christ in baptism.

Pathfinder Easter Weekend Camp |

Sis. Donna Yearwood - Pathfinder Director
On March 29 the Pathfinders
of the King Street and Breath
of Life Churches travelled to
Cave Hill, St Lucy for a weekend camp.
For many of the youngsters,
it was their first experience
camping in tents which they
themselves had to pitch.
We welcomed the Sabbath
at sunset, and on Sabbath
morning we worshipped at the
Cave Hill SDA Church which is
near the campsite. Both the
Sabbath School programme
and the Divine Worship services were uplifting and inspiring.
After lunch, the Sabbath
afternoon was spent in a
nearby gully discussing God in
nature. Unfortunately the
rains came and severely inter-

rupted the programme. We

were drenched. On Sunday
morning we had to spread out
all our wet clothes and sleeping bags to dry, and make repairs to the tents which had
been affected by the heavy
rains and winds of the previous
afternoon.
However, neither the heavy
rain nor the strong winds
appeared to have dampened
the spirit and enthusiasm of
the pathfinders. Each Unit
enthusiastically set about preparing lunch. They wanted to
ensure that their Unit had
prepared the best and tastiest
Sunday lunch.
Sunday night was social
night. Some classes did stargazing, while others, exhausted
from the days activities, went

to sleep early.
On Monday morning we
took off on our hike. It was a
tremendously thrilling experience as we traversed the countryside taking in sights such as
Hoads Farm, Morgan Lewis
Windmill and Walkers Quarry.
There were the usual moans
and groans coming from some
of the youngsters, but by and
large they all enjoyed the challenges and experiences of the
hike.
All our planned activities for
the weekend over, we prepared for the trip back to our
respective homes. For all of us
the camp had ended much too
quickly. As we travelled home
we eagerly looked forward to
the next pathfinder camp.

Womens Ministries Retreat 2013 | Sis. Colene Layne - Womens Ministries

On Sunday, March 31 thirtythree women from the
Womens Ministries and the
AY Departments traveled to
Cattle Wash, St. Joseph for a
one day retreat.
It was a wonderful opportunity for the women of the
Church to leave the hustle
and bustle of the city and
enjoy the picturesque view
of the hills and breathe the
pure oxygen of the countryside.
The day began with a
prayer and praise session
followed by a thought
provoking feature titled
Spiritual Strength by
Sis. Verna Lindore-Knight.

After this session, we

took our lunch and were
treated to another feature
which was conducted by
Sis. Sandra Greaves, the
wife of Pastor Haldaine
Greaves. She dealt with the
topic Choices. She examined the story of Mary and
Martha in Luke 10:38-42.
It was highlighted that
Jesus assured Mary and
Martha that although there
are many things which can
demand attention, there is
only one thing necessary,
and that is our relationship
with our Lord and Saviour
Jesus.

She emphasized that

although life demands that
we are to be workers, we
must be worshippers as
well. Prayer and devotion
should be our priority in
the morning.
The day ended with
prayer and a recommitment
to our faith in Christ.
All the women, including
the new converts, agreed
that they had spent a spiritually refreshing day, and
requested that they be kept
in our prayers.

Some of the women having a

discussion.

Challenge Knot Tie

Challenge your friends to tie a
knot in a piece of rope without
letting go of the ends.
This is an easy one, but it will
baffle people who don't know how
to do it. All you need is:
1. A piece of rope 3 or 4 feet long.

Step 1: Hold the rope as in Figure

1, and give your friends a chance
to try to tie a knot in the rope
without at any time letting go of
either end.

Brother Hammer served as

the chairman. The other
members of the tool belt
informed him that he must
leave, because he was too
noisy. But brother Hammer
said, "If I have to leave this
carpenter's shop, then brother
Gimlet must go too. He's
insignificant and makes a very
small impression." (A gimlet
is a small tool with a screw
point, grooved shank, and a
cross handle for boring holes).
Little brother Gimlet arose
and said, "All right, but
brother Screwdriver must
go also. You have to turn
him around and around to
get anywhere with him."

To this brother Plane levelled

his terse reply, "Well, then,
brother Saw will have to depart
too. The changes he proposes
always cut too deep."

Brother Saw complained, saying,

"Brother Ruler will have to
withdraw for he's always measuring other folks as though he
were the only one who is right."

Page 10

All the accusations against each of

these tools were absolutely true,
yet the carpenter used every one of
them. No matter which tool He
used no other tool could have done
the work better.

Brother Ruler then surveyed

the group and said, "Brother
Sandpaper doesn't belong here
either. He's rougher than he
ought to be, and is always rubbing people the wrong way."
In the midst of the discussion,
the Carpenter of Nazareth
walked in. He had come to perform his day's work. He put on
His tool belt and went to the
workbench to make a pulpit. He
employed the ruler, the
saw, the plane, the hammer, the
gimlet, the screwdriver, the
sandpaper, and all the other
tools. When the day's work was
over, the pulpit was finished,
and the carpenter went home.
