Philippine theatre
Southeast Asian arts: The comedia
The earliest known form of organized theatre is the comedia, or moro-moro, created by
Spanish priests. In 1637 a play was written to dramatize the recent capture by a
Christian Filipino army of an Islamic stronghold. It was so popular that other plays were
written and staged as folk dramas in Christianized villages...
The term moro-moro refers to a type of folk drama performed in villages throughout the
Philippines, usually during fiestas. Although each village's moro-moro is a little different
in terms of treatment, all are full of romance and melodrama, and the highpoint is
always a battle between Muslims and Christians. Local people write the script, which is
in verse, and some performances include quite elaborate scenery and costumes. Music
and dance are also part of the production.
One of the most notable moro-moros is held in San Dionisio in Rizal Province, where
the drama is performed in the church and the village square every spring, usually in
April or May.

Zarzuela (Spanish
pronunciation: [arwela])
spoken and sung scenes, the latter incorporating operatic and popular song, as well as dance. The
etymology of the name is uncertain, but some propose it may derive from the name of a Royal
hunting lodge, the Palacio de la Zarzuela near Madrid, where, allegedly, this type of entertainment
was first presented to the court. [1] The palace was named after the place called "La Zarzuela"
because of the profusion of brambles (zarzas) that grew there, and so the festivities held within the
walls became known as "Zarzuelas".
There are two main forms of zarzuela: Baroque zarzuela (c.16301750), the earliest style,
and Romantic zarzuela (c.18501950), which can be further divided into two. Main sub-genres
are gnero grande and gnero chico, although other sub-divisions exist.
Zarzuela spread to the Spanish colonies, and many Hispanic countries notably Cuba developed
their own traditions. There is also a strong tradition in the Philippines where it is also known
as sarswela/sarsuela.[2] Other

Kasaysayan
wikang Tagalog, Pampango, Ilokano, Cebuano, Ilongo at Waray.
the Sea), 1921 at Dalagang Bukid (Country Maiden),1919.
Zarzuela, also called sarswela in the Philippines, is a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates
between spoken and sung scenes, the latter incorporating dances. It is believed that the name derives
from a hunting lodge, the Palacio de la Zarzuela, near Madrid where, in the 17th century, this type of
performance first occurred before the Spanish royal court.
There are two main forms of zarzuela: Baroque zarzuela (c.16301750), the earliest style, and
Romantic zarzuela (c.18501950), which can be further divided into the two subgenres of gnero
grande andgnero chico.
The zarzuela (also known as zarzuelta) is also a genre and integral part of Filipino music. It was brought
during the period of Spanish colonization by the settlers and friars, and quickly spread to the natives, who
adapted it to their tastes.
Musical theatre had already existed in Spain since the time of Juan del Encina. This new genre
named zarzuela was innovative in giving a dramatic function to the musical numbers; that is to say, they
were integrated into the argument of the work. Other characteristics were the presence of a large
orchestra and the incorporation of choruses, songs, and dances.
sarsuwela
a traditional Spanish musical drama adapted in the Philippines
Its origin is in the Spanish zarzuela, which was a musical dramatic form with spoken
dialogue.
The word zarzuela comes from the name of a hunting lodge in Spain that was used by
royalty. El Palacio de la Zarzuela had a theater in which was performed a play that was
called fiesta de la Zarzuela -- although the title was a reference to the location, the
word zarzuela came to be adopted for a distinct genre.
In the late 19th century in the latter years of the Spanish colonial period, the form was
introduced to the Philippines and continued to flourish into the 20th. A favorite plot
theme would involve a love story. Famous writers of sarsuelas include Benigno Zamora,
Severino Reyes and Clodualdo del Mundo. Dalagang Bukid (Country Maiden, 1919) is
arguably the most popular sarsuwela in Tagalog.
sarsuela
a theatrical spectacle that mixes songs with dances
pahaplis at pahapyaw lamang.
baril at sigawan.
at nakakasawa.
