PRODUCT MASTERSPEC LICENSED BY ARCOM TO PELLA CORPORATION
PRODUCT DATA SHEET 2 - Structural Test Pressure: For uniform load structural test, is equivalent to 150
percent of the design pressure.
PRODUCT DATA SHEET 3 - Minimum Test Size: Smallest size permitted for performance class (gateway test
size). Products must be tested at minimum test size or at a size larger than minimum test size to comply
with requirements for performance class.
Two approaches to specifying performance are included in this specification the performance designation method
and the test performance method. Pella recommends the use of the performance designation method. Pella also
recommends that all performance requirements are specified in one place, in Article 2.3. With this approach Article
1.4 can be deleted. Paragraph 1.4.C on windborne debris resistance has been moved to Article 2.3 so it is with the
other performance requirements.
SCHEDULE 3 - PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
PRODUCT DATA SHEET 0 - General: Provide wood windows capable of complying with performance
requirements indicated, based on testing manufacturer's windows that are representative of those
specified, and that are of test size indicated below:
Retain one of three subparagraphs below. AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS allows manufacturer to use a smaller
size than required under gateway performance requirements to test for compliance with optional performance grade.

Retain paragraph and subparagraphs below if Architect has either delegated design responsibility to Contractor or
wants to review structural data as another way to verify windows' compliance with performance requirements or
performance designation.
PRODUCT DATA SHEET 1 - Structural Performance: Provide wood windows capable of withstanding the
effects of the following loads based on testing units representative of those indicated for Project that pass
AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS, Uniform Load Structural Test:
Model building codes require windows and other fenestration to be designed and installed, according to ASCE 7, to
withstand wind pressure loads for components and cladding. Revise subparagraph below if loads are developed
from wind-tunnel tests. Building heights and window locations should be shown on Drawings.
1.1

Design Wind Loads: Determine design wind loads applicable to Project from basic wind speed
indicated in miles per hour (meters per second) at 33 feet (10 m) above grade, according to
ASCE 7, Section 6.5, "Method 2-Analytical Procedure," based on mean roof heights above grade
indicated on Drawings.

Delete four subparagraphs below if information is indicated on Drawings. Other factors that adjust for building
height, shape, and other characteristics such as topographic factor, gust effect factor, and enclosure classifications
may need to be included. This information should enable contractors to require window manufacturers to determine
positive and negative design wind pressure loads.

MASTERSPEC
08/04 (R 05/05)
PRODUCT MASTERSPEC LICENSED BY ARCOM TO PELLA CORPORATION
AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS makes an exception to requirement in ASTM E 1300 and in GANA's "Glazing
Manual" for R, LC, and C class windows that frame systems be sufficiently stiff to limit lateral deflections of glass
edges to less than 1/175 of their length. Only AW and HC class windows must pass the Uniform Load Deflection
Test. Retaining subparagraph below for windows other than AW and HC classes may require manufacturers to
provide a custom window unless calculations or test data recorded during the Uniform Load Structural Test indicate
that frame deflections comply with the 1/175 limitation.
1.2

Deflection: Design glass framing system to limit lateral deflections of glass edges to less than
1/175 of glass-edge length or 3/4 inch (19 mm), whichever is less, at design pressure based on
testing performed according to AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS, Uniform Load Deflection Test or
structural computations.

Model building codes and ASCE 7 establish criteria for buildings in hurricane-prone locations. Authorities having
jurisdiction may accept other test methods and protocols. Verify requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.
PRODUCT DATA SHEET 2 - Windborne-Debris Resistance: Provide glazed windows capable of resisting
impact from windborne debris, based on the pass/fail criteria as determined from testing glazed windows
identical to those specified, according to [ASTM E 1886 and testing information in ASTM E 1996]
[or] [AAMA 506] <Insert test method> and requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

Selecting the performance grade is the first step. It is based on the design pressure required by the building code or
ASCE 7 and is the key element in the AAMA/WDMA101/I.S.2/NAFS industry standard.
Selecting performance class is the second step. As noted in the MASTERSPEC Evaluations for this section, the
industry standard does not provide clear guidelines for selecting one performance class over another. Per the
industry standard, the appropriate level of performance classification may not correspond with the general use of the
building in many cases. For example, many residential buildings are built in locations subject to severe weather that
require higher-performance fenestration products than those that meet the R requirements. On the other hand, many
hospitals, schools, institutions, etc. might successfully use products meeting the R requirements. For Pella products,
performance class varies due to product type and/or product size. Please use the following minimum performance
classifications for Pella products.
Casement [R], Projected Awning [R], Double-hung [R], Fixed Clad Frame [C], Fixed Circlehead [C].
If higher performance classifications are required, see www.pellaadm.com for additional information based on
product size.

HC[40] [45] [50] <Insert grade>.
AW[40] [45] [50] <Insert grade>.
As indicated.

Consider retaining subparagraph below if test performance method is selected for specifying windows and
designating a performance class does not conflict with basic wind speed and performance testing indicated.
Retaining this subparagraph is not required if test performance method is selected for specifying windows but it may
be useful to establish a quality level and testing protocol per AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS for windows. For
example, life-cycle testing is required by AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS for operable AW class windows only.
1.7
Performance Class: [R] [LC] [C] [HC] [AW].
The CRF is a common specification for metal windows because the frames and sash are highly conductive and thus
susceptible to condensation in cold climates. However, since wood is a natural insulator, condensation resistance is
not typically specified for wood windows.
PRODUCT DATA SHEET 2 - Condensation-Resistance Factor (CRF): Provide wood windows tested for
thermal performance according to AAMA 1503, showing a CRF of [45] [52] <Insert value>.
NFRC 100 is most commonly used with wood windows.
PRODUCT DATA SHEET 3 - Thermal Transmittance: Provide wood windows with a whole-window, U-factor
maximum indicated at 15-mph (24-km/h) exterior wind velocity and winter condition temperatures when
tested according to [AAMA 1503] [ASTM E 1423] [NFRC 100].
U-factors lower than 0.40 typically require low-E glass. U-factors lower than 0.30 typically require low-E glass
and triple glazing. Coordinate U-factor with Article 2.4. Paragraph B.
3.1

U-Factor: [0.35 Btu/sq. ft. x h x deg F (2.0 W/sq. m x K)] [0.40 Btu/sq. ft. x h x deg F (2.3
W/sq. m x K)] [0.43 Btu/sq. ft. x h x deg F (2.5 W/sq. m x K)] [0.60 Btu/sq. ft. x h x deg F (3.4
W/sq. m x K)] <Insert value appropriate to system of measure> or less.

Coordinate SHGC with Article 2.4. Paragraph B. Two additional thermal performance criteria that are frequently
specified in projects that incorporate day lighting of interior spaces are visible light transmission and ultra-violet
light transmission.

PRODUCT DATA SHEET 4 - Solar Heat-Gain Coefficient (SHGC): Provide wood windows with a wholewindow SHGC maximum of [0.40] [0.50] [0.55] <Insert value>, determined according to NFRC 200
procedures.
For the reasons noted above, Pella recommends the use of OITC but publishes performance values for both OITC
and STC.
PRODUCT DATA SHEET 5 - Outside-Inside Transmission Class (OITC): Provide glazed windows rated for not
less than [22] [26] [30] <Insert rating> OITC when tested for laboratory sound transmission loss
according to ASTM E 90 and determined by ASTM E 1332.
PRODUCT DATA SHEET 6 - Sound Transmission Class (STC): Provide glazed windows rated for not less than
[26] [30] [35] <Insert rating> STC when tested for laboratory sound transmission loss according to
ASTM E 90 and determined by ASTM E 413.
Any of these paragraphs could be retained with performance designation indicated in the "AAMA/WDMA
Performance Requirements" Paragraph and subparagraphs in this Article, if window performance exceeds
AAMA/WDMA minimum gateway performance or optional performance.
Retain remaining paragraphs and subparagraphs if test performance method is selected for specifying windows;
delete if they do not suit product and Project.
Retain air-infiltration values to suit windows selected. Optional example values, in order of least to most stringent,
are maximum infiltration values allowed at test pressure set for different combinations of product type and
performance class according to AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS. See Sections 5 and 8 and Table 9.1 in
AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS.
PRODUCT DATA SHEET 7 - Air Infiltration: Maximum rate not more than indicated when tested according to
AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS, Air Infiltration Test.
7.1

Maximum Rate: 0.3 cfm/sq. ft. (5 cu. m/h x sq. m) of area at an inward test pressure of 1.57
lbf/sq. ft. (75 Pa).

Test pressure in subparagraph above is equivalent to 25-mph (40-km/h) wind speed and is typically used to test R, C,
and LC performance classes; test pressure in first subparagraph below is equivalent to a 50-mph (80-km/h) wind
speed and is typically used to test HC and AW performance classes.
7.2
Maximum Rate: 0.3 cfm/sq. ft. (5 cu. m/h x sq. m) of area at an inward test pressure of 6.24
lbf/sq. ft. (300 Pa).
7.3
Maximum Rate: <Insert rate and test pressure.>
PRODUCT DATA SHEET 8 - Water Resistance: No water leakage as defined in AAMA/WDMA referenced test
methods at a water test pressure equaling that indicated, when tested according to
AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS, Water Resistance Test.
Retain first subparagraph below if performance equal to minimum for all other classes set by
AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS is required. Retain second subparagraph if performance equal to minimum for
AW class windows set by AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS is required for Project. Revise either subparagraph if
AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS limit for test pressure of 15 lbf/sq. ft. (720 Pa) does not suit Project. Revising
either subparagraph without verifying with manufacturers that they have tested to greater pressures risks requiring
additional testing.
