Teacher, the form of adjective
used to describe something is
called adjective in the positive

Very good! When an
adjective is used to describe
something, it is in the
positive form.
Positive Degree has no
comparison and it denotes
quality.
Example:
safe
hot
manageable
cute
fat
long

purple
beautiful

happy

bright

early

Can you give examples of

sentences using adjectives in
positive degree?
(Students examples)
Look at the second and fifth
sentence. Is there any
comparison made?
Yes. The pencil is compared
to the ruler and the notebook
is compared to the sketch
pad.
Very good. What do we call
the form of adjective used to
compare two things?
When an adjective is used to
compare two things, the
adjective is in the comparative
form.
Very good. So when an
adjective is used to compare
two things, the adjective is in
the comparative form or
degree.
Comparative Degree
denotes quality in a greater
or lesser degree. We add the
suffix er, -r, or ier to the
adjective. We also use than
after the adjective.
Rules:
1. We add the suffix r for
the adjective that ends
with a vowel.
Example:
safe safer
cute cuter
2. We add the suffix er
when the last letter of
the adjective ends with
a consonant.
Example:
long longer
bright brighter
3. If a word ends in the
pattern, consonant
vowel consonant,
simply double the last
consonant, and add er

to the word.
Example:
hot hotter
fat fatter
4. When the adjective
ends in y and has two
syllables, drop the y
and add ier.
Example:
happy happier
early earlier
5. For an adjective that
has two syllables and
does not end in y - add
the word more or
less before the
adjective.
Example:
purple more purple / less
purple
6. For a word with three
or more syllables, we
use the word more or
less before the
adjective.
Example:
beautiful more beautiful /
less beautiful
manageable more adorable
/ less manageable
The ruler is longer than the
pencil.
The sketch pad is bigger than
the notebook.
What change or changes
have you noticed from the
underlined words in these
sentences?
We added the suffix er to
the word long and for the word
big, we doubled the last
consonant then we added the
suffix er.
Very good observation! Now
can you give your own
example of adjectives in the
positive and changed into
positive degree?
(Students examples)

What rule number did you

follow? Why did you use
that?
I followed rule number ___
because _____.
Look at the third and last
sentences on the board. Are
there any comparisons
made?
Yes, teacher.
How many are being
compared?
There are three objects that
are being compared.
Very good. Now what do we
call the form of adjective
when it compares three or
more things?
When more than two things
are being compared, they are
adjectives in superlative
form.
Excellent. When more than
two things are being
compared, they are
adjectives in superlative
form.
Superlative Degree
compares more than two
persons, places or things.
The suffix
-est, -iest, or st is added to
the adjective and the word
the is used before the
adjective.
Rules:
1. We add the suffix st
when the last letter of
the adjective ends with
a vowel.
Example:
safe safer safest
cute cuter cutest
2. We add the suffix est
when the last letter of
the adjective ends with
a consonant.
Example:
long longer longest
bright brightest brightest

3. If a word ends in the

pattern, consonant
vowel consonant,
simply double the last
consonant, and add
est to the word.
Example:
hot hotter hottest
fat fatter fattest
4. When the adjective
ends in y and has two
syllables, drop the y
and add iest.
Example:
happy happier happiest
early earlier happiest
5. For an adjective that
has two syllables and
does not end in y - add
the word most or
least before the
adjective.
Example:
purple more / less purple
- most / least purple
6. For a word with three
or more syllables, we
use the word more or
less before the
adjective.
Example:
beautiful more / less
beautiful
- most / least beautiful
manageable more / less
manageable
- most / least
manageable
Example:
The string is the longest
object among the three.
The envelope is the biggest
among the three.
What have you noticed from
the rules between the
comparative and superlative
degree? Do they have

something in common?
Teacher, I have noticed that
the rules in building a
comparative and superlative
form are almost similar.
Excellent. Can you give
some examples of adjectives
from positive to comparative
then superlative degree?
(Students examples)
Very good students!
d. Engagement Activity
A.
It seems that you have
understood our topic. Now, I
want you to choose objects

them using the three forms
of adjectives.

and weight)
The wrench is heavy.
The encyclopedia is heavier
than the wrench. The
dumbbell is the heaviest of
them all.
The color blue is dark. The
color brown is darker than
blue. The color black is the
darkest among the colors.
Excellent! Let us give them
a very good clap!
e. Generalization
Again, what are the three
forms of adjectives?
The three forms of adjectives
are positive, comparative and
superlative forms.
Very good. When do we use
the positive form?
The positive form of adjective
is used to describe one
person, place or thing.
Correct. And when do we
use the comparative form?
The comparative form of
adjective is used to compare
two persons, places or things.
