Railwaybusinessesrelyonadvancedtechnicalandoperationalsystemstocarryvastnumbersofpassengersindenselypopulatedareasandlargequantitiesof
goodsoverlongdistances,economically,safelyandinatimelymanner.ThetaughtpostgraduateprogrammeinRailwaySystemsEngineeringandIntegrationhasa
strongfocusondevelopingpostgraduatesrailwayengineeringknowledgeandknow-how,theirsystemsintegrationskillsandtheirunderstandingofthecomplex
interactionsbetweensubsystems.Itdevelopsparticipantsabilitytoworkinmulti-disciplinaryprojectteamsandisstronglysupportedbyrailwaypractitioners.
Graduatesoftheprogrammedesign,build,operateandmanagesuccessfullythesophisticatedsubsystemsandcomplexinterfacescharacterisingexistingandnew
railways.Thefull-timeprogrammecomprises8classroomtaughtmodulesand2research-orientedmodules,scheduledoveraperiodof8months.Part-timestudents
followthesamesyllabusasfull-timestudentsbutcompletethetaughtmodulesinasequencethatbestsuitstheirwork-commitments.TheMScstrandrequiresthe
submissionofadissertationthatisbasedonasignificantamountofindependentresearch.

Towardstheendofthe20thcenturyitbecameapparentthattheever-increasingdemandforthetransportofpeopleandgoodscouldnotbesatisfiedbythecurrent
transportoffer,withoutcreatingsignificantenvironmentalimpactthroughnoise,atmosphericpollutionandlandtake.Railwayswererediscoveredasapotentially
sustainablesolutionformanytrafficflows,particularlywherevolumesarehigh,whilealsoofferingbenefitsintermsofspeed,safetyandreductionsincongestion.

Thisprogrammeisdesignedtoprovidetheknowledge,knowhowand
skillsrequiredtodesignandmanagesuccessfullythehighlyspecialised
subsystemsandcomplexinterfacesthatcharacteriseexistingandnew
railways.Theprogrammehasastrongfocusondevelopingyourrailway
engineeringknowledge,systemintegrationskillsandyourabilitytoworkin
focusedprojectteams.
Manyparticipantsareexperiencedrailwayengineersandmanagers,
sponsoredbytheiremployers,buttheprogrammealsoallowsnewentrants
totherailwayindustrytofamiliarisethemselveswiththespecialist
disciplinesinvolvedinrailwaysystemsengineering,whilealsogainingan
insightintothecomplexinteractionsbetweensubsystems.
ThetaughtpartoftheprogrammeinRSEIisbuiltaround8assessed
modulesof10creditseach,2researchmodulesattracting20creditseachandfoursupplementarymodulesthatarenotformallyassessed,thesameforDiplomaand
MSccandidates.MScstudentsalsoundertakeanintegratingprojectthatleadstoadissertation,attracting60credits,allatMasterslevel.Themodulesareassessed
individuallytoallowflexiblestudy,includingfull-timeandpart-timeattendancebybothEuropeanandoverseas-basedstudents.
Technologyorientedmodulescovertheprinciplesofrollingstockdesign,railwaytractionsystems,infrastructureandtracksystems,railwaycontrolsystems,aswellas
systemsengineeringprinciples.

Managementfocusedmodulescomplementtherangeofsubjectstaughtinthetechnology-orientedmodulesandincludethestrategicmanagementofrailway
operations,railwaytechnologystrategyandeconomics,aswellasergonomicsandhumanfactors.
Modulesincludelectures,tutorials,teamexercisesandindustrialvisits.TheprogrammealsofeaturesaEuropeanstudytour.

Thereare2visitsofthreeweeksinthefirstyear(inOctoberandJanuary)and2visitsofthreeweeksinthesecondyear(inNovemberandFebruary)eachallowing
attendanceontwotaughtmoduleswithaweekofindependentstudyinbetween.InthesecondyearthereisalsoaoneweekvisitfortheEuropeanStudyTour
(usuallyinMay)andthereisadiscretionaryvisitinthethirdyeartoputthefinaltouchestothedissertation.
Youwillhaveasubstantialamountofhomework,assessedbymeansofassignments,andyourexamswilltakeplaceatHongKongPolytechnicUniversityora
similarinstitution.
ThereareanumberofpeoplefromAustralia,HongKongandSingaporewhohavecompletedtheprogrammeonthisbasis.
