Applied Numerical Methods

Solution of Algebraic and Transcendental Equations
Instructor: Ravi Kiran Maddali

Assignment
#1
MATH 301

Instructions to the students

Provide solutions correct up to 4 decimal places.
If method is not mentioned, you can choose a suitable method for obtaining the solution.
Try to cover majority of the methods discussed in the classroom.
Mention the formulas wherever necessary and write each and every step CLEARLY.
Use plain A4 sheets to answer the questions and mention your roll no, name and
assignment details on the cover page. Also use proper margins.
Try all the problems on your own and dont copy from others. In case of any doubts, the
student can approach the faculty for clarifications/hints.
Answer All Questions

1. Under volumetric estimation of reservoir engineering, the oil in place is calculated by the
equation =

, where

N(t) = oil in place at time t, STB (Stock tank barrels),

Vb = 7758*A*h = bulk reservoir volume (bbl), 7758 = bbl/acre-ft, A = area in acres
h = thickness in ft, (p(t)) = porosity at reservoir pressure p (fraction)
Sw(t) = water saturation at time t (fraction),
Bo(p(t)) = oil formation volume factor at reservoir pressure p (bbl/STB)
p(t) = reservoir pressure at time t (psia, pounds per square inch)
If the oil in place is 266000000 STB, estimate the porosity , given the following
parameters: A=26,700 acres, h=49 ft, = 85%, ! = 1.68 %%&/( , and
p(t)=2980 psia.
2. From the self-shielding principle of Nuclear Engineering, gamma rays in spherical
sources are attenuated by the mass of the source itself. To determine the exact leakage of
gamma rays, one should perform a radiation transport calculation. Alternatively, the
fraction of gamma rays that emerge(leak) un-collided (not colliding) from a spherical
source can be estimated using the following equation:

If 9 = 10.2 =/>>, : = 0.47 >A/ /=, Estimate the diameter d of the sphere in cm so that
only 5% of the gamma rays contained in the spherical source leak un-collided.

3. A particle starts at rest on a smooth inclines plane whose angle B is changing at a

CD
constant rate C = 5 < 0. At the end of t seconds, the position of the object is given by

F =

Suppose the particle has moved 1.7 ft in 1 s. Find, to within 10L , the rate w at which B
changes. Assume that = = 32.17 M/N / .
4. The volume V of liquid in a hollow horizontal cylinder of radius r and length L is related
ST
to the depth of the liquid h by O = P8 / >QN R U 8 28 / W X. Determine h
S
given r=2m, L=5m, and V=8 m3.

5. In a chemical engineering process, water vapor (Y/ Z) is heated to sufficiently high

temperatures that a significant portion of the water dissociates, or splits apart, to form
oxygen and hydrogen. The mole fraction x of Y/ Z that dissociates can be represented by
/]

the equation [1 F = F\/_`^ , where K is the reactions equilibrium constant and a is

the total pressure of the mixture. If a = 3 and K=0.05, determine the value of x that
satisfies the equation.
