Tesco confirms joint venture with Tata in India

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Tesco (LSE:TSCO.L - News) has sealed a joint venture
agreement with a unit of Tata Group that will see it invest $140 million and become the
first foreign supermarket to enter the country's $500 billion pounds retail sector.
Tesco said on Friday that following receipt of approval from the Indian Foreign
Investment Promotion Board, it has entered into a deal with Trent Limited
(NSI:TRENT.NS - News) to form a 50:50 joint venture with the operator of the Star
Bazaar retail business, Trent Hypermarket Limited (THL).

Tesco has launched a new interactive platform to boost collaboration, innovation and
sustainability across its suppliers. The Tesco Supplier Network will help over 5000
members from across the world share the opportunities and challenges of delivering
high quality, affordable and sustainable products to Tescos customers. Members will
be able to connect directly with Tesco teams, learn more about Tesco and learn from
each other on issues such as energy, food waste or innovation
This new community of Tesco teams, suppliers and producers from around the world
gives us the opportunity to improve communication, share ideas and continually
improve the products that our customers enjoy. The Network will play an integral part in
our partnerships with suppliers to deliver for our customers.

Producer Network, which served fresh food producers, and the Tesco Knowledge Hub,
which was open to branded manufacturing and processing suppliers

Tesco to open 6-8 multi-brand stores in India this year


UK-based Tesco is chalking out expansion plans, are waiting for a positive signal from
the Narendra Modi-led central government before moving ahead with their plans for the
Indian multi-brand retail sector. The company, in equal partnership with the Tata group's
Trent, is working on opening six to eight new stores in Maharashtra and Karnataka
under three of its formats this financial year, informs a source aware of the plans.
THL, which currently runs 12 stores across Maharashtra and Karnataka, would open
stores of 1,000 sq ft to 30,000 sq ft in Pune, Mumbai and Bangalore under Star
Bazaar, Star Market and Star Daily formats, depending on location and size of the
properties available, the source said. "Since they have distribution centres in Mumbai
and Bangalore, it makes sense to penetrate those cities deeper."
