by reliable integration into an interdisciplinary research

environment given by the university institutes and the
cooperation partners in industry and science. The
advanced Manufacturing Engineering paradigm for
next generation factories is supported by a collection of
emerging technologies according to the main
interdisciplinary research fields (clusters): Strategies
and Factories' Development, Management of Global
Manufacturing Networks, Information and
Communication Technologies for Manufacturing,
Equipment and Service Engineering, Material and
Process Engineering, Intelligent Manufacturing
Systems.
Educational organisation
GSaME has self-administration with its own terms and
conditions, autonomous management, its own
curricular concept including selection procedures and
regulations for the doctoral degree. The mission of the
Graduate School is to advance the scientific foundation
of manufacturing engineering by autonomous scientific
work and through interdisciplinary qualification of elite
managers, engineers and scientists for the global
challenges of the next generation factories. GSaME
implemented the very successful concept of the dual
education system for vocational training established in
Germany, aiming at a dual scientific education system,
which focuses on a constant exchange between
theoretical and practical phases based on independent
scientific work and industrial internships. Working in
close cooperation with national and international
institutions, the school promotes an innovative model
of doctoral research training.
1.) Theoretical lectures and seminars
2.) Research demonstrators for advanced
Manufacturing Engineering, as an innovative training,
research and test environment for performing practical
research with physical and digital tools
3.) Dissertation projects performed in an expert and
collaborative supervision and mentoring environment
4.) Industry best-practice projects
5.) International orientation
The relationship between research training activities
within GSaME and research projects is defined as
50/50 at the beginning. The calculation is based on a
minimum of 40 working hours per week. The research
training activities consist of theoretical lectures and
seminars, research demonstrators for advanced
Manufacturing Engineering and the international
orientation.
Study abroad unit(s)
International exchange of doctoral candidates: doctoral
candidates will have the chance to study abroad within
the network of international universities of GSaME.

Course objectives
The objective is to take a substantial step towards a
comprehensive System for Advanced Manufacturing
Engineering through interdisciplinary scientific research
and to provide comprehensive approaches, methods
and tools for engineering of manufacturing systems. It
includes manufacturing engineering as a core
technology and requires education and infrastructure
for the development of a competitive position of the
manufacturing industries. GSaME is the first initiative
of its kind to be fully oriented towards the challenges
and goals of European research and education at the
highest level.
Tuition fees
No tuition fees
Enrolment fees
Approx. 150 EUR per semester
Costs of living
To cover living expenses, you will need about 750 EUR
per month. This is for rent (approx. 240-350 EUR),

Job opportunities
Owing to its location in the heart of one of Europe's
largest high-tech regions, there are many opportunities
to find employment. Nevertheless, please do not come
to Germany expecting to be able to finance your entire
studies by working. The study load is very high and it is
not always easy to find a part-time job. Non-EU
citizens are allowed by law to work for a maximum of
120 days per year. Students who are employed by the

university in one of the institutes or departments

("Studentische Hilfskrfte") are exempt from this

About the city
The city of Stuttgart, with about 600,000 inhabitants, is
the state capital of Baden-Wrttemberg. Situated in the
valley of the River Neckar, between the hills of the
Swabian Alb and the Black Forest, it is often called
"the city between forests and vineyards". A large
number of cultural highlights are to be found in the city,

including the State Opera, the famous ballet founded

by John Cranko, theatres, concert and musical halls,
art galleries, and various museums. The Stuttgart
region is one of Europe's strongest high-tech regions specialised in industries such as car manufacturing,
environmental technologies, machine tools,
electronics, information and communication
technology. Many internationally renowned companies
such as Bosch, Daimler, Porsche and IBM Germany
have their headquarters and factories in the greater
Stuttgart region. In addition, numerous smaller
companies producing machine tools, textiles, precision
instruments, and luxury items are located here.
