Mount St. Helens

35th Anniversary Edition
The Eruption and Recovery of a Volcano
Rob Carson
In May 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted with a force
equivalent to thousands of atomic bombs. In just a few
minutes, 234 square miles of forest and lakes were
destroyed, and virtually all life on the mountain
disappeared.

In the decades since the eruption, the volcano

and the blast zone surrounding it have made a remarkable

recovery. The 35th anniversary edition of Mount St.
Helens: The Eruption and Recovery of a Volcano by
Rob Carson (Sasquatch Books; March 2015; $23.95) traces
both the catastrophic explosion and the regeneration of this
Northwest natural wonder. Over one hundred pages of
color photography document the immediate effects of the
eruption and the new landscape on display today: from
young forests and lupine meadows filled with elk and pocket gophers to the human elements of roads,
bridges and visitors centers that occupy the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. The new
edition includes a chapter documenting the 2004 to 2008 eruption, which created unprecedented
opportunities for scientists researching the volcano.

Discover the fascinating past, present, and future of this iconic Pacific Northwest mountain in

the 35th anniversary edition of Mount St. Helens: The Eruption and Recovery of a Volcano.

Praise for the 20th anniversary edition of Mount St. Helens: The Eruption and
Recovery of a Volcano by Rob Carson
The book is a rare animal; it contains both intriguing text and exciting photographs, most in full
color. It is an invaluable chronicle of how nature rearranges itself. The opening chapters on the
eruption and its immediate effects are reason enough to have this book in your library, but the
closing chapters on how geology and biology have reasserted themselves in the ensuing years are
most fascinating.
Statesman Journal
Carsons book is one of many loaded with stunning photos of the mountain blowing up. What
sets the book apart, though, was the prose. Carson paints vivid pictures with detail and fact,
giving context to this momentous event.
The Spokesman-Review
Through historical and eyewitness accounts, scientific analysis and amazing photos, Rob
Carsons Mount St. Helens: The Eruption and Recovery of a Volcano, takes us back to the blast
of 20 years ago.
High Country News
