Infrastructure
Requirements
Infrastructure Requirements for MS Dynamics AX 2012 R3
The infrastructure requirements for Microsoft Dynamics AX depends on the size of
implementation. There can be two sample deployment scenarios as listed below:
1. Single-server deployment
2. Custom deployment
A single-server deployment occurs when you deploy all the Microsoft Dynamics AX
components on a single computer. It is recommended that a single-server deployment is
considered only for development or demonstration environments.
A custom deployment of Microsoft Dynamics AX expands on the topology for a singleserver deployment. The following list describes how the computers in this sample topology
are used:
1. An Active Directory domain controller is required to deploy Microsoft Dynamics AX
components.
2. Windows clients for Microsoft Dynamics AX that connect over a wide area network
(WAN) are configured to use Terminal Services to communicate with Application
Object Server (AOS). Windows clients on the local area network (LAN) are configured
to communicate with AOS directly.
3. AOS is deployed on a single-server computer. AOS can host the following
components:
Workflow
Services and Application Integration Framework (AIF)
4. External applications use services and AIF to exchange data with Microsoft Dynamics
AX.
5. A web server can host the following components:
Search server
Enterprise Portal for Microsoft Dynamics AX
Web services on IIS
Microsoft Project Server
6. The server that runs Microsoft SQL Server can host the following components:
Microsoft Dynamics AX online transaction processing (OLTP) database
Model files in the OLTP database
Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS)
Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)

Hardware requirements
This section of the document describes the hardware that is required to run Microsoft
Dynamics AX. Actual requirements vary, based on the system configuration and based on
the applications and features that you decide to install. The following are some of the many
factors that affect the choice of appropriate hardware for a Microsoft Dynamics AX
installation:
The number of transactions per hour
The number of concurrent users
The number of concurrent users of Enterprise Portal for Microsoft Dynamics AX
The number of remote connections
The number of locations

Processor and RAM requirements

The following table lists the number of processors and amount of RAM that are required for
server computers. Both minimum and recommended hardware are listed.
1. Server computers
CPU cores:

Minimum: 2 cores
Recommended: 8 cores

RAM:

Minimum: 8 GB
Recommended: 14 GB

Recommended: 4 GB

Sample Server System Specification

Processor: Intel Xeon E3-1230 V2

RAM: DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) (8x2)

AX Environments
Three environments with similar configuration have to be maintained for distinct purposes:1. Test Server
2. Development Server
3. Production Server
Each of the three environments will have an AOS Server and a Database Server. A single
Active Directory Domain Controller installed on an independent machine will control the
domain services for all three environments. If the client is using other components of AX
then EP, IIS, Help server and project server will be installed on one more server in each
environment.
