IS 112 RESEARCH METHODS

Review of Related Literature what we do when

we review is critique, evaluate, reassessment of
analysis, argument. Finding research gaps is a must
what is missing in the entire body of literature
that we have read about. Critical engagement in the
literature is necessary in addition to just describing
what the literature says.
Things to avoid in RRL:
a.) Lengthy and too short discussions about what
the author has written please, give only the main
points of the author. Write no more than ten pages
for RRLin order so to practice concise, crisp,
sharp, clear writing and discussion.
b.) Avoid circular writing!
c.) Separating sections in RRL for different authors
combine and consolidate different authors in the
RRL.
Things to be prepared before the Thesis
Proposal:
a.) Introduction
-important in order to excite the readers. Devote
one to two pages to the introduction.
-talk about the context; what is the problem your
studying, what is the issue, get a very broad over
view. In one to two paragraphs, tell the readers the
problem in your study.
-this is where you introduce the research gap. In
those literature theres one angle that hasnt been
well explored blah blah there hasnt much written
about blah blah blah Tell them that this research
is worthy of your study based on your research
gaps. This should be easy if you will do your RRL
right.
-discuss what the research topic and design is
about. This aspect partially can be written through
your
research
questions,
objectives
and
methodology.
* introduction, scope and limitation, significance of
the study is not a priority according to sir Silverio.

Its easier to do when the RRL, research questions,

and objectives are finalized. We write the
introduction towards the end.
b.) Scope and Limitations
-define what the focus is depending on the topic,
research sample, risk analysis, it tells what the
research will cover. Can be written in one full page
only.
c.) Significance of the Study
-significance of the study will tell why this
research is important. Why this research is
important in terms of answering a research gap must
be written in RRL. Give a statement of two why
your research is worth the study in: 1) International
Studies; 2) IP track; 3) Peace Minor. 1 page to one
half page is enough.

(Two equally important part of thesis)

d.) Theoretical Framework
-since he discussed this in the previous session,
he did not discuss further in this part.
-can be searched through RRLs.
e.) Methodology
-deals with the Research Methods to use. The
research approach should be very explicit that our
research is a Qualitative. This must be 4-5 pages
* the research objectives, research questions (which
inuna natin before) will define our research design.
A. Research Approach - briefly discuss what
qualitative research is tell them why you used it and
justify to the readers your choice. the researchers
chose Policy analysis because their research is like
thisblah blah
B. Method and Justification - are there different
methods associated with qualitative researchwhat
are those? (Discourse Analysis, Interview, Case
Study, Policy Analysis, etc.)
C. Data and Gathering - what do you need to
gather in order to do the research? Determine what
will be your primary data and secondary data.

Primary data First Hand information such

as interviews of politicians and ordinary people,
survey, official documents of officials; international
organizations; NGOs, letter heads, official letter,
official press release, UN resolution, laws, and then
text of what has been said. They reflect directly
THE persons point of view.
-Not all primary data are generated form
interviews per se, some of them may be writtenIf
you can justify that what has written originally from
the source came directly from politicians, sample
population and such.
-Articles published by writers are not primary data
they are secondary. If the data reflects another
persons point of view of particular matter, that is
secondary data.
-data generated by empirical observations are
considered primary data.
-in some cases, blogs of politicians, and other
person of interest may be used JUST AS LONG AS
it is verified that indeed it is their official blog. (for
example: Pia Cayetanos Blog)

-all primary data obtained were done with

consent. Are you going to have consent form? Are
you going to gather confidential sources such as
intelligence report which may have an implication
on the government operation? What would be the
impacts of it?
-Youre not just going have an interview one on
one, there should be a process of getting to know
the person before the person open up to you.
-All those issue which involves the good and bad
consequences of your research to the persons who
will be involved in it have to be explicitly seen.
F. Criteria of Selection (Interview Research
Methods)
-of all those million people, who will you
interview? Do not mention their names but at the
very least, discuss the criteria for selecting your
population sample. Justify the importance of
interviewing your sample to your research.
Sequence of Submission
Chapter One Background of the Study

Secondary data - If the data reflects another

persons point of view of particular matter that is
secondary data.

1.1 Introduction

-news articles written about issues, reviews of

particular policies, and another persons analysis of
a problem.

1.3 Scope and Limitations

Mention what will be your primary and

secondary data and why is it important in
answering your research objectives. Justify per
research objective on what primary/secondary
data you need.
D. Data Analysis

1.2 Research Question and Research Objectives

1.4 Significance of the Study

1.5 Analytical Framework
1.5.1 Theoretical Framework
1.5.2 Operational Framework
1.6 Definition of Terms
1.7 Methodology

-Schematic Analysis. We will talk about this in

a different time. Focus more on your RRL,
Research Objectives, Theoretical Framework,
Methodology.

1.7.1 Research Method

E. Ethical Consideration

1.7.4 Data Analysis

-especially for those issues with confidential,

sensitive, looking in the lights of people.
