WRITERS CRAFT EXAM INFO


DATE OF EXAM: Wednesday, June 19th. 12:30pm to 2:30 pm (plus 1 hr flex time). Room 216.
This exam requires much studying as well as the memorization of key concepts. You have all the
information you need in the course books and handouts. You must answer all questions in INK and be
sure to bring an extra pen as you will be doing a lot of writing! Dictionaries are NOT permitted.
Manage your time wisely. Suggested times are indicated for each section. Remember to return all
course materials/texts prior to the exam. The exam consists of the following sections: TOTAL: /80

A. Self-Critique:
In an approximately 350-word reflection, detail your strengths and weaknesses as a writer based on
your experience in this course. You will be evaluated on the following:
Your objectivity and insight into your work
Your ability to support statements with examples from your works
Organization and style of analysis
Strategies: Review all assignments and assignment expectations. How well did or
didnt you meet each expectation? Do not just rely on teacher comments, but review
each piece as though you are re-evaluating it yourself.
B. Editing: Read a passage and answer the multiple-choice questions by circling the correct responses.
Each sentence will be numbered for reference but it is a continuous passage..
Know rules of punctuation (including semi-colon, colon, dash, commas, quotations, dialogue.),
sentence errors (comma splice, run-on, fragment, verb tense shifts, faulty pronoun references, faulty
subject-verb agreement, parallel structure, misplaced modifier), subject, predicate, noun, verb, articles,
pronoun, preposition, phrases (prepositional, infinitive), clauses (adverb, adjective, participial, noun,
subordinate, independent, restrictive, non-restrictive), sentence types (interrogative, declarative,
imperative, exclamatory), subordinate conjunctions, coordinate conjunctions, syntax: simple sentences,
compound sentences, compound-complex sentences, cumulative sentence, periodic sentence
Strategies: Study info from the yellow course book including Grammar Tips and Review,
EWC Common Errors, Achieving Sentence Variety (answers in Appendix), Activity on
Excerpt from Great Expectations and Hatchet, Active and Passive Voice, Punctuation, The
Dashing Dash, Spelling Rules, etc.
C. Poetry Analysis: Literary Analysis (Prose or Poetry): You will read a poetry sight passage, and
answer questions to test your knowledge of course skills.
Strategies: study the following handouts: Terms for Analysing Prose Passages, EWC4U
Glossary of Literary/Poetic Terms, 10 Easy Steps to Explicating Poetry (review terms), All
Lit. Terms
D. Rhetorical Strategies: You will read a non-fiction, prose sight passage and answer questions that
test your knowledge of course skills.
Strategies: Review Satire conventions/Humour Devices, Tone words, All Literary Terms,
Stylistic Devices, and Writing Conventions/Prose Skills Conventions (including
Descriptive Notes, Character Development and Methods of Characterization,
Conventions of Stream of Consciousness)
