Summary
Front window of Prospero Papaleo's tailor shop, 211 Lygon Street Carlton. Prospero migrated to Australia in 1938 from a town
near Salerno in Campania. He was an apprentice tailor in Italy and in Melbourne found employment first with O'Brien and
Earle tailors and then in a clothing factory making wartime supplies. He married in 1946 and purchased a property at 211
Lygon Street, turning it into a tailor shop. As the demand for hand-made suits dwindled in the 1950s, Prospero gradually
supplemented the work with retail sales of men's fashion and accessories. The business expanded and in 1958 Prospero
abandoned tailoring to concentrate solely on retail of men's wear. Prospero was made a Justice of the Peace in 1958. In the
early 1950s he encouraged other Carlton traders and retailers to form an association and thus the Carlton Traders' Promotion
Committee was formed in circa 1953. Its name later changed to The Lygon Street Traders. The latter published a broadsheet.
