QUALITATIVE FEATURES IN LOBBYCeiling mounted lighting fixtures in a circular pattern.

Central light fixture with pasters on the walls.
Ambient lighting has been used to highlight the
entrance by use of recessed halogens (50 w).
The circular nature create a sense of movement
towards the staircase.
Accent lighting has been used to highlight the posters.

QUALITATIVE FEATURES ON STAIRCASES-

Staircases are adequately lighted with a lot of variation in color and type of lighting
used.
All the lighting fixtures are ceiling mounted and recessed or hidden.
Landings have been separately lighted.
A transition state has been created on each landing by the use of yellow light fixtures.
The stairs have been lighted with white light.
Hidden lighting fixtures have been used at certain points to break the monotony of the
ambient lighting.

QUALITATIVE FEATURES IN
CORRIDORSOne experiences variations in the intensity of
light as we move towards the entrance.
The side corridor is dimly lighted , the lux level
in the front corridor is comparatively higher.
The changes in the lux levels has been done
purposely to accentuate the feeling of being
closer to the auditorium.
White light is used in the front corridor to
create a soothing environment and to reduce
the anxiety level while yellow light has been
used in the side corridors.
All fixtures are ceiling mounted , recessed
halogens (50 w).

QUALITATIVE FEATURES IN FOYER-

The main foyer is highly illuminated by the use of

wall and ceiling lighting fixtures.
The food joints have been very brightly
illuminated.
Ambient and accent lighting has been provided
which also take care of the task lighting.
Chandelier has been placed in the center with
ceiling mounted halogens alongside .
The food joints have been over illuminated shifting
the focus towards it.
The reflective nature of the walls , floor and the
ceiling helps creating a soothing environment.
There are two types and color of light that have
been used in the foyer categorizing different
functions.
Although the foyer has been adequately lighted ,
the lighting quality produced by the chandelier
creates a different ambience within itself .
Accent lighting has been used to accentuate the
entrance to the auditorium in the same space but
with different color.

QUALITATIVE FEATURES IN WAITING LOUNGE-

Each sitting space has been highlighted with white light

Rest of the circulation space has been dimly illuminated with diffused yellow
light.
The variation in the light quality is clearly visible within the sitting area and the
way the ambient (diffused) and accent lighting has been used , it creates a
separate enclosure within itself without any physical demarcation.

QUALITATIVE FEATURES IN WALL DISPLAYS-

Various type of lighting fixtures have been used for accent lighting of the wall
displays in relation to the surrounding environment.
Wall mounted fixtures have been used to focus on the displays .
Different color lighting has been used for getting different effects for the
displays.
Yellow light has been used to provide depth to the displays
White light has been used to achieve greater clarity.

FIXTURES USED-

Parabolic aluminized reflector lamp

(floodlights)(also known asPARCAN
light) is a type of electric lamp that is
widely used in commercial, residential,
and transportation illumination. The
lamps and their fixtures are widely used
intheatre,concertsandmotion picture
productionwhen a substantial amount
of flat lighting is required for ascene.
low cost, light weight, easy maintenance,
high durability, and high output. They
are predominantly tungsten halogen.

Fresnels (halogen and spotlights), use

aspherical reflector with the lamp at
thefocuspoint. Fresnels are not good for tight
focus on small areas. They are most often
used at medium distances from the stage for
area lighting.
Theatrical Fresnels are typically made in 8, 6 or
3inch varieties, referring to the diameter of
the lens, with lamps ranging in power from
150 W (typically with a 3-inch fresnel) to 2000
W (with an 8-inch fresnel). The 3-inch variety
is referred to as aninkie. Fresnel lenses can
operate close to the light source and are very
cheap to produce, so the lanterns tend to be
small and cheap. variable beam widths.
Moving the lamp closer to the lens makes the
field wider; moving the lamp away from the
lens makes the field smaller. Their widest
beams are wider than the beams from all but
the widest of ERSes.

Theellipsoidal reflector spotlight(ERS), also known

asprofile(after its ability to project the silhouette or
profile of anything put in the gate), is the most
abundant instrument type currently in theatrical use.
The flexibility of the ERS allows it to fulfill the bulk of
lighting roles in the theater. They are sometimes
known as aprofile spotlight.
Ellipsoidal reflectors are used for their strong, welldefined light and their versatility

Early ERSes had the lamp housing mounted at a 45 angle

to the axis of the reflector and lens train. Since this puts the
lamp on a radius of the primary focal point, these fixtures
are referred to asradialERSes.

More modern ERSes have the lamp on the axis of

the optical system. These fixtures are referred to
asaxialfixtures.

Algona Project Goals

Reduction in energy and maintenance
cost
Improvement in lighting quality
High quality LED lighting with 10 year
Warranty

Challenges for Algona

Variety of fixtures and claims:
Vendor pressure
Up-front price deterrent
Need for accessible technical
resources for good
roadway lighting practices:
Lack of local expertise staff
Upfront cost
Community interest

More Challenges
Luminares must meet Buy American
standards
Algona had to demonstrate that the
luminares
had a simple pay back within the life of
the
fixture
Algona wanted confidence that
community would accept project:
luminares will provide improved
lighting

High pressure sodium (HPS) lamps are the most efficient member of the HID family
where some degree of color rendition is important. Standard HPS lamps produce a
golden white light when they reach full brightness. Many recognize them as the
familiar golden light from street lights, one of their principal applications.
Disadvantages
The light produced is a golden
white color, which may not be
appropriate for certain
applications.
1.Requires a ballast.
2.Once started can take from
five to ten minutes to reach full
light output. They also require
at least a one minute cool-down
to re-strike.
3.End of life is characterized by
on-off-on cycling, and continued
operation can damage the lamp
ballast if not replaced quickly.

THE SOLUTION

LED RETROFIT ITS IS ESSENTIALLY REPLACING THE LIGHT SOURCE WHICH MAY BE
A BULB , LAMP ETC BUT NOT CHANGING THE FIXTURE , WHICH SAVES MONEY.

Algona Project Results-

447 LED lights installed in Algona.

Luminaires expected to result in annual energy savings of approximately 234,254 kWh
(42% savings)
Life expectancy greater than 20 years
Project funds invested expected to realize a simple payback well within the life of the
fixture based on energy savings alone.
Luminaires expected to yield significant annual operation and maintenance savings for
the participating Community.
