Course description

This course will focus primarily on fluid mechanics of viscous and incompressible flows in laminar regimes, with an emphasis on slow flows. The approach will be to look at fluid mechanics
fundamentals, and at the mathematical modeling & analysis of simplified flow situations.
The course is intended to act as a foundation course for engineering graduate students
coming from a range of backgrounds, but with previous exposure to fluid mechanics at the
undergraduate level. The students need to be comfortable using mathematics, in particular advanced & multi-variable calculus, and linear constant coefficient ordinary and partial differential
equations. The course involves using mathematical techniques and algebraic manipulation, in
order to help understand the physics of different flows.

Assessment

There will be 4-5 assignments during the semester (50%) and a final project (50%).

Attendance policy

I expect you to attend every class. If you must miss class due to a professionally acceptable reason, such as illness or family emergency, let me know as soon as reasonable and we
can make necessary arrangements.

Special needs

Students needing accommodations including those for professional activities, disabilities (ADA),
and/or religious observances should notify me in the first week of the term.

Academic honesty

I will communicate rules regarding assistance and collaboration for each assignment. If in doubt,
you must ask! Violation of these rules will disqualify the assignment. Repeated violation will
result in failure of the class.

Topics covered

Fluid mechanics is a vast subject, the following schedule is a tentative plan that is subject to
change according to class needs.
