1.

A man starts walking north at 1.2 m/s from a point P. Five minutes later a woman start
walking south at 1.6 m/s from a point 200 m due east of P. At what rate are the people
moving apart 15 min after the woman start walking? [ 2.79 ] ,

2. If two resistors with resistances

then the total resistance

changing when

3. A 13 ft ladder is leaning against a house when its base starts to slide away. By the time
the base is 12 ft from the house, the base is moving at the rate of 5 ft/sec.
a) How fast is the top of the ladder sliding down the wall? [-12 ft/s]
b) At what rate is the area of the triangle formed by the ladder, wall and ground
changing? [-59.5 ft/s]
c) At what rate is the angle between the ladder and the ground changing? [-1 rad/s]
4. A girl flies a kite at a height of 300 ft, the wind carrying the kite from her a rate of 25
ft/s. How fast must she let out the string when the kite is 500 m away from her? [20
ft/s]
5. At noon, ship A is 100 km west of ship B. Ship A is sailing south at 35 km/hr and ship B
is sailing north at 25 km/hr. How fast is the distance between the ships changing at
4.00 pm? [55.4 km/hr]
6. A runner sprints around a circular track of radius 100 m at a constant speed of 7 m/s.
The runners friend is standing at a distance of 200 m from the center of the track.
How fast is the distance between the friends changing when the distance between them
is 200m? [6.78 m/s]
7. Sand falls from a conveyor belt at the rate of 10

DERIVATIVES
(OPTIMIZATION)

1. A closed 3 dimensional box is to be constructed in such a way that its volume is

4500

. It is also specified that the length of the base is 3 times the width of

the base. Find the dimensions of the box, which must satisfies these conditions and
will result in the minimum possible surface area of the box. [10, 30, 15]
2. A farmer wants to fence an area of 1.5 million square feet in a rectangular field and
divide it in half with a fence parallel to one of the sides of the rectangle. How can
he do this as to minimize the cost of the fence? [1000 ft by 1500 ft]
3. A rectangular storage container with an open top is to have a volume of 10

. The

length of its base is twice the width. Material for the base costs RM10.00 per
square meter. Material for the sides cost RM6.00 per square meter. Find the cost
of materials for the cheapest such container. [RM163.54]
4. Find the dimensions of the rectangle of the largest area that can be inscribed in a
circle of radius r.
5. A piece of wire 10 m long is cut into two pieces. One piece is bent into a square and
the other is bent into an equilateral triangle. How should the wire be cut so that
the total area enclosed is (a) maximum

(b) minimum? [use all of the wire for the

square, 403 9 + 43 m for the square]

6. The top and bottom margins of a poster are each 6 cm and side margins are each 4
cm. If the area of the printed material on the poster is fixed at 384

, find the

dimensions of the poster with the smallest area. [ 24 cm, 36 cm]

7. Find two positive integers such that the sum of the first number and four times the
second number is 1000 and the product of the numbers is as large as possible. [500

8. For insurance purposes, a manufacturer plans to fence in a 10,800

rectangular

storage area adjacent to a building by using the building as one side of the enclosed
area. The fencing parallel to the building faces a highway and will cost RM3 per
foot installed, whereas the fencing for the other two sides costs RM2 per foot
installed. Find the amount of each type of fence so that the total cost of the fence
will be a minimum. What is the minimum cost? [ 120 and 90, RM720]

wide, but cutting out a square from each of the four corners and bending up the
sides. Find the largest volume that such a box can have. [2
