FATIGUE EXERCICE

INTRODUCTION

1. INTRODUCTION
Fatigue is one
ne of the most important aspects in machine design. If fatigue is not taken into account,
functionality and safety can be a problem because of the lifetime and the unknown work conditions. The
aim of this work is to obtain and analyze the lifetime and damage of two different dynamic systems. The
macro blocks of those dynamic movements are the following ones:
Case 1

200 MPa

350 MPa

250 MPa

Case 2

280 MPa

250 MPa

230 MPa

The lifetime is calculated using the next equation:

0.5

Where:

Nf : Number of cycles

a : Strength

f: Fatigue strength coefficient

b : Fatigue strength exponent

This equation let us know the number of cycles the dynamic body is able to do. Apart from that,
once we know the lifetime we can calculate the damage of the dynamic body using Palmgren-Milner
Palmgren
rule:
:

FATIGUE EXERCICE

INTRODUCTION

The life time is coming from statistic theories, so to determine exactly the value of cycles is
impossible, for that reason different ranges and limits are usually used in this area.. The cyclic behaviour of
dynamic bodies is represented by S-N
S curve

IMAGE 1: S-N CURVE

As this graph is formed with regression curve,
curve all values are not in the same line. For this reason,
different ranges are usually used in order to know the life time,
time too.. The two different ranges are the
confidence limit and prediction limit.
The values that we have to know to start the calculation are the following
followin ones:

We can see in two tables above that the damage interval in the second case is less than in the first
case. It could be observed, that in first case the dynamic cycle has very different strength values, so the
load is quite irregular and this affects
affect the body negatively. In the second case, the load is more regular so
the dynamic cycle is bore in a bettter way.
