PASSIVE IR SENSOR

PIRH 13D0723, -1, SR

INSTRUCTION MANUAL
Introduction
The Mini Passive Infrared sensor consists of the Passive Infrared Head (PIRH), mounting stake,
and selected QTI transmitter. It detects the passage of a target through a narrow, 5-degree, field
of view by the change in the radiated heat relative to the background. The sensor head triggers a
transmitter, which transmits a user set ID code. The PIRH sensor is available in three models:
Short Range (SR), Normal Range (NR), and Long Range (LR).

Operation
A. Setup
1. Establish gain setting and useful range by testing with similar terrain, environment and
targets as the planned surveillance location.
2. Install at desired location using stake or tree screw. Use the stake support with the stake
if needed to provide rigidity in loose or sandy soil (see optional equipment).

PIRH shown with stake (left) and tree screw (right).

3. Wind the cable 2-3 turns around the stake and connect to the transmitter.
Note: See Operator Maintenance section if deploying sensors in wet conditions.
4. Adjust the o-ring to the desired height on the inner extension rod. Boresight the sensor
head at the target, then tighten the stake set screw.
5. Extend the transmitter a full cable length away from the PIRH sensor.
6. Install the antenna and bury the transmitter and cable under 1 inch of soil.
7. Camouflage, as appropriate.
B. Gain Setting
13D0723, -1 Older Version No longer available
Gain is adjustable by a 10-position switch on the back of the PIRH. 0 provides the most
sensitivity, while 9 provides the least. Positions 0-3 provide the most significant
sensitivity adjustments. Positions 4-9 provide minute changes. (NOTE: Hot, windy
conditions or suddenly changing light conditions such as blowing clouds can cause false
alarms at the high gain setting.)

Gain is adjustable by an 8-position switch on the back of the PIRH. H provides the most
sensitivity, while L provides the least. L-H adjustment settings are linear gain settings.
(NOTE: Hot, windy conditions or suddenly changing light conditions such as blowing clouds
can cause false alarms at the high gain setting.)

C. Alignment Mode
To set alignment, boresight the sensor head at the target. Place the transmitter in alignment
mode (MXMT and MXMT(M) battery cap up, MMCT battery cap down, DAOR THIS
SIDE UP should be towards the ground.) and perform tests to check the alignment and
range. The LED on the back of the sensor head will illuminate as detection occurs when the
transmitter is in the align position. NOTE: Transmitter will not send an alarm in the
alignment mode.

Emplacement Considerations
Some targets, moving slowly through the sensor detection zone, may cause multiple alarm
triggers. Therefore, counting of targets is not always accurate.

Activation by passing target

The following conditions, in the field of view, can cause loss of sensitivity or nuisance alarms.
These should be considered when selecting a sensor for a specific application.
Sunrise and sunset (Do not aim PIR Sensor at rising or setting sun.)
Blowing grass or foliage
Insects on the lenses
Dust or snow on the lenses

Note: Retainer on sensor head screw can be popped loose using the QTI tuning tool in order to
insert the screw from the other direction, if desired.

Maintenance
A. OPERATOR MAINTENANCE:
The PIRH Passive IR Sensor has been designed as a low cost, low maintenance piece of
equipment. All components are potted and sealed which reduces the amount of maintenance
required. The only required operator maintenance is to inspect the equipment for damage
and keep the equipment clean of dirt, grime, and caked on mud.
Outside Case Maintenance: Remove large clumps of mud with a brush or by hand. Use a
dry soft cloth to remove any remaining residue or dirt. NOTE: Do not submerge the
equipment in water. This could result in damage.
Lens Maintenance: Remove excess dirt with soft brush and blow material away. Then
clean the lens surface with a damp cloth.
Connector Inspection: Check connector cavities for dirt and obstructions. If present,
remove obstructions. Inspect connector to ensure pins are properly aligned. If pins are out
of alignment, use needle nose pliers to realign the pins.
Wet Conditions: For sensors used under wet conditions, the following precautions are
recommended. Keep the inside of the connector area dry by applying a dab of Dow
Corning #4 silicone grease directly to the transmitter connector before mating the
connectors. (See Spare Parts.) If water has accumulated inside the connector, shake out
the water, and apply the silicone grease to the transmitter connector. Then connect the
sensor to the transmitter
Cable Inspection: Inspect all cables for cuts, cracks, or damage. If damage is found, and
the equipment is inoperable, cut the cable between the damage and the sensor head.
Splice a repair cable to the sensor cable (see repair parts below). Place heat shrink
material over the spliced area then wrap with electrical tape.
B. DEPOT MAINTENANCE:
Upper echelon maintenance will be performed by the supplier of the equipment. If the
equipment is beyond the user capability to repair, it can be returned to the supplier for test
and evaluation. Upon completion of the inspection, the supplier will notify the user if the unit
can be repaired. If the equipment is not covered by the warranty an estimate will be provided
for repair costs. If the equipment is not repairable, the supplier will specify replacement
costs. (NOTE: See warranty below for procedures for items under warranty.)
C. EQUIPMENT STORAGE:
Upon return to the facility, clean equipment as noted in operator maintenance above. Remove
batteries from all equipment to prevent possible damage. If batteries are left in the
equipment, transmitters will continue to send fault alarms every 10 minutes causing a
continuous drain on the batteries and possibly resulting in damaged or ruptured batteries.
After cleaning, return the equipment to the storage cases. Store in a dry, room temperature
environment.
