Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Mark 1:29-39
We can imagine that the
appearance of this group of guests
at her house caused Simon's
mother-in-law some distress; in
her illness, she had been unable to
offer them the hospitality so
important in that culture. But as
soon as the fever disappeared, she
regained the freedom to properly
welcome her visitors. No longer
sick, she was able to serve. And
that was exactly what she wanted
to do. Without hesitation, she
began to use her restored health
to care for others. And soon
enough, her hospitality was
extended to new levels because
"the whole town was gathered at
the door" to see Jesus in action.

How do we use our health? Do we

think of it as a gift from God to be
put at the service of others? Or do
we think of good health as simply
our own right? Today's virtuous
woman teaches us about a kind of
physical generosity. Recognizing
that her health had been given to
her as a gift, she in turn offered
her strength, her ability to stand
and walk and work, as a gift to
others. What a beautiful way to
understand the human body.
Instead of focusing on how our
bodies can serve us, may we
follow the example of this woman
who was so quick to attend to the
needs of her family, her friends,
and her neighbors.

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

From the Business Manager

In the mail, you will be receiving the information for the
2015 Annual Catholic Appeal: Called to Be Merciful.
This appeal supports charitable needs throughout the
Diocese of San Diego. Our gifts make possible the work
that impacts so many in our diocese: service to the poor
and imprisoned, education for children in Catholic
schools and training of catechists, formation of candidates
for the priesthood, ministry to our youth and to young
people on university campuses, preparation of couples for
marriage, and support for parish development in Imperial
Valley. If you have a moment, take a look at the brochure
and become familiar with the eight areas that are assisted
by this campaign. To participate in the campaign, return
your pledge card that you receive in the mail, in the Sunday collection basket. Extra brochures, pledge cards, and
envelopes will be available in the pews and the side
shelves for the next two weeks. Each parish has a goal to
attain from the Diocese. Any monies received over that
amount stay here in the parish. Last year, our amount
over our goal was used for the Fire Restoration Fund.
Thank you for your consideration.
You may have wondered about the scaffold over the altar
last week. It was for the final alignment of the laser beam
for the smoke detector that monitors any smoke that rises to the ceiling. The fire department approved its operation on Monday. It was also tested, that the sound system
turns off when the smoke/fire alarms are activated.
It is hard to believe Lent is only slightly more than two
weeks away. Yes, there will be another mailing before
Ash Wednesday. This mailing will not have any pledge
cards or envelopes, only help for a prayerful and peaceful
Lent. Peace

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

DAILY PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

O Jesus,
I pray for your faithful and; fervent priests;
For your unfaithful and tepid priests;
For your priests laboring at home or
Abroad in distant mission fields.
For your tempted priests;
For your lonely and desolate priests;
For your young priests; For your dying priests;
For the souls of your priests in Purgatory.
But above all, I recommend to you
The priests dearest to me;
The priest who baptized me;
The priests who absolved me from my sins;
The priests at whose Masses
I assisted and who gave me
Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion;
The priests who taught and instructed me;
All the priests to whom I am indebted
in any other way
(especially...)
O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart,
And bless them abundantly
in time and in Eternity,

Sponsored by the CMO & High
School Youth of our parish.
Time: 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Location: Prendergast Hall
Date: Tuesday, February 17th, 2015
Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday. It is
also known as Mardi Gras Day, Shrove Day, Fetter
Dienstag or Carnival. Since Lent is a time of abstinence, traditionally of meat, fat, eggs and dairy
products, Shrove Tuesdays (from to shrive, or
hear confessions) menu was designed to use up all
the fat, eggs and dairy products left in the kitchen
and store room. It is also a feast to prepare for the
time of famine in the desert. Santa Sophia Parish
will begin our Shrove Tuesday celebration with
Burning of the Palms. Bring your palm crosses
and fronds blessed last year on Palm Sunday to be
burned. Following the burning of the palms we will
have our Mardi Gras celebration. Please come and
enjoy a great evening of food, fun and activities for
all. We will provide the Pizza and ask that you
bring a dish to share.
A-M bring a vegetable dish or salad to share
N-Z bring a dessert to share
Please make a dish to share for 8 or more persons
in a disposable container. Paper goods and drinks
will be provided. We are asking families to make a
$5.00 donation at the door, to help offset the cost of
the pizza. Evening activities will include: Mask
Making, Face Panting, Games, Beads and a 50/50
Drawing. If you would like to donate bags of candy,
water or boxed drinks or for more information
please call the CMO office at (619) 463-6011.

Have you been Baptized?

Have you celebrated your
First Eucharist?
Are you over 18 yrs. old, attending Mass regularly and
have not been Confirmed?
If you answered YES to any of these questions,
you are invited to find out more about our Adult
Confirmation sessions that will begin on: Thursday,
February 19th at 7:00 pm in Room 4 of the Catechetical Ministry Office.
Please call Donna at (619) 463-6011 for more
information and to register for the upcoming class.

How do we use our health? Do we

think of it as a gift from God to be
put at the service of others? Or do
we think of good health as simply
our own right? Today's virtuous
woman teaches us about a kind of
physical generosity. Recognizing
that her health had been given to
her as a gift, she in turn offered
her strength, her ability to stand
and walk and work, as a gift to
others. What a beautiful way to
understand the human body.
Instead of focusing on how our
bodies can serve us, may we
follow the example of this woman
who was so quick to attend to the
needs of her family, her friends,
and her neighbors.
