Dear Friends,
Welcome to the Barrier Islands Centers Annual Oyster
Roast! By joining us in our signature fundraising event,
each one of you is helping to preserve and perpetuate the
Shores unique coastal heritage and doing so much for our
community.
The Oyster Roast is an opportunity to celebrate the bounty
and beauty of this region.
We extend our deepest
appreciation to the local oyster houses, who are managing
the roasting and steaming this evening. And we also thank
the volunteers who are helping out this evening and year
round.
Our gratitude also goes to the local artisans, artists,
restaurants, entrepreneurs and other businesses who
generously donated the stunning assortment of items on
our silent auction.
The auction showcases a broad
spectrum of local talent. When you bid often and bid high
on those silent auction items, you get to take home some
beautiful items, while the proceeds help keep our doors
open with free admission to all.

Laura Vaughan
Executive Director

Finally, thanks to our local and regional

corporate sponsors. Your investment in
the
BIC
demonstrates
your
commitment to this community both
in celebrating our history and ensuring
our future. Your sponsorship means the
BIC can continue to be a vital and
vibrant educational resource for
everyone, of all ages, incomes and
backgrounds.

So, enjoy and have fun! And we hope to

see you again on Saturday, May 23rd at Art & Music on the
Farm.

The Silent Auction will be held in the large tent.

Indicate your bid in the appropriate space on your bidding row. All
new bids must be higher than the previous bid by at least the
minimum increment (but feel free to go higher!) indicated at top of
bid sheet.

Many items have a BUY IT NOW price on the bid sheet (yellow
box). If you bid at this level and enter your bid number in the yellow
box, you win the item - no one can outbid you!

The winning bidder is determined at the close of the auction. You

may check your status by consulting the duplicate bid sheet left in
place.

To pay for your item: At 7:30, please go to the Cashiers Desk in the
BIC gift shop. We accept cash, check, American Express, VISA,

Barrier Islands Center Documentary Films

The Barrier Islands Center is proud to have produced

three incredible documentary films in partnership with
Academy Award-nominated Filmmaker James Spione.
Each of the films profiles extraordinary individuals and
presents a beautifully textured documentary that gives
voice to the people, lifestyles and traditions that make up
the unique fabric of the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
Our Island Home
The first of the films, Our Island Home was released in
2010. In this poignant documentary, three former
inhabitants of the long-lost settlement of Broadwater
recall their unique way of life on Hog Island, a remote
barrier island off Virginias Eastern Shore.
Spirit of the Bird
The second documentary film, Spirit of the Bird, features
a remarkably thoughtful cast of rough-hewn coastal
characters who offer a poignant meditation on the myriad
ways hunting, art and memory intersect in the lives of
those keeping the tradition alive.

Watermen
This third chapter of the Eastern Shore trilogy explores
the lives of the last independent fishermen to work the
waters of the Atlantic and Chesapeake Bay. Despite
hardships and an uncertain future, the film richly
captures the fierce pride and enduring optimism of the
Eastern Shores watermen.
