A. Inspeclion:
1. Each rubber part must be inspectedbefore it is put into service.
2. Bend, stretch or compressthe part and look for cracks in the stressed
area,especiallyin corners.lf cracks appear,discard it. For a very large
rubber part cut a strip of rubber from a non-criticalarea and test the
strip. For example:cut a strip of rubber from betweenthe fingersof an
SBOP packingelementfor this test.
3. Weatheringwill frequentlycause the surfaceof a rubber item to become
poruderyand this is an indicationthat the aborretest shouldbe performed.
4. Excessiveaging will also cause the rubber hardnessto increase. However,
it is not practicalto measurehardnessand keep the necessaryrecords in
the field so the aboueinspectionprocedureis recommended.

B. Storage:
1. Storageconditionsdeterminethe storagelife of each rubber part. TableA-'l
describesgood, rrcrmaland poor storageconditions.Table A-2 gives the
typical storage life for each condition.
2. The typical Storagelife can be used as a guideline, but somevariationswill
occur. This is why each rubber part must be inspectedbefore it is put into
service.
