A timeline presented during the Menomonee Falls

School Board meeting Feb. 23 provided a glimpse of
the current facilities planning within the district.
In a discussion that was under the agenda item
"community engagement/facilities planning, the timeline summarizes steps for districts workshops for facility
planning and a community survey over the next year.
Jill Huskisson, public outreach specialist with the
Eppstein Uhen architectural firm, said the timeline "is
very strategic in how you intend to engage that community in several different ways as you move toward a
potential referendum in 2016."
Huskisson said that under the proposed timeline,
there would be a referendum in February or April of
2016. Huskisson said that an resolution for a referendum has to occur 73 days before a referendum election.
She said that all of the work that occur prior to the
board committing to a referendum begins in the spring.
"In our conversation with the Communication
Planning Committee, they felt a community workshop
would be a great opportunity to involve the community
in conversation. When we think about that workshop
and the opportunity to really build some ownership in
that process and develop a broad understanding of
some of the challenges facing the school district, that
workshop does provide a really good opportunity to
have conversation," Huskisson said.
Huskisson said the workshop would be an opportunity to collect feedback from the community to determine where their priorities are set.
Huskisson said from the workshops, a survey could

Kia dealership proposed in Falls

The Menomonee Falls Plan Commission

operation along Leon Road.
The Boucher Group is proposing a Kia

lot staff, with 90 percent of the employees
being full time.
The item is on the March 3 Plan
Commission agenda. For the proposal to
proceed, an OC-5 Commercial Service
Overlay Zoning District would have to be
added to the existing I-1 Light Industrial

Component of the village Comprehensive

Plan would have to be changed from the
Industrial Land Use to the Commercial Land
Use Classification. The item is on the commission agenda for a conceptual review as
well as the zoning and land use changes.
Any changes would ultimately have to be
approved by the Village Board.
Also on the commission agenda is a
request from the Zilber Property Group for
a concept of two new industrial buildings
totaling 325,000 square feet on land
south of Manhardt Drive and East of Lilly
Road. According to a village staff report,

the first building to be constructed would be

comprised of 146,423 square feet and
would be constructed on the west side of
the parcel. That building would provide
warehousing space for up to four tenants,
with access from the west side of the building on Lilly Road.
The item is on the agenda for an industrial use approval by the commission. The
area is part of the village's 12th tax incremental finance district (TIF) which was created late last year.

Riveredge Nature Center events

The following events will be taking place at
Riveredge Nature Center.
Noel J. Cutright Bird Club: From Billions
to None (29th anniversary meeting)Tuesday,
March 3, 7 to 9 p.m.: The bird club helped
fund this award-winning film in which Joel
Greenberg reveals the compelling story of the
Passenger Pigeon extinction, and the striking
relevance of the bird's demise to conservation
issues today. Using stunning CGI animation,
From Billions to None recreates the glory of
pigeons in flight as well as the ways in which
19th century ancestors destroyed them all. But
it offers a message of hope: We can learn
from past mistakes. Cost: Free for all participants.
Maple Syrup SupperFriday &
Saturday, March 6 and 7, 5:30 to 8:30pm
Members and their guests are invited to an oldfashioned maple syrup supper, a special
Riveredge event for members and their guests.
Space is limited. Register online at
Riveredgenaturecenter.org or call (262) 3752715. Cost: $20 for adults, $10 for children
12 and under; free for 3 and under.

Call for artists

to participate
in WRAP Exhibit

The Schauer Center in Hartford is

one of over 25 locations hosting an
exhibit and educational workshop as
part of the 2015 Wisconsin Regional
Arts Program (WRAP). Sponsored by
the Schauer Center, in cooperation
with the Kettle Moraine Fine Arts
Guild, and the UW-Madison
Department of Liberal Studies and the
Arts, entries are currently being considered for inclusion in the exhibit.
Chosen artwork will be displayed in
the Suckow Family Art Gallery through
Sunday, March 20.
WRAP is open to all non-professional artists over 16 years of age.
Artwork must be original and completed in the last two years. Entries will be
juried and meritorious works will be
displayed at a state exhibit in
September at UW-Madison, where artwork is eligible for cash awards.
This is the seventh consecutive
year that the Schauer Center has sponsored the WRAP exhibit and workshop, stated Schauer Center
Executive Director Brenda Lee
Johnston. The continued growth in
participation confirms that area artists
have found the program a beneficial
opportunity to showcase their work
and develop their talents.
As part of the program, the
Schauer Center is offering a public lecture/demonstration by a local artist on
Sunday, March 29, 2015. After the
workshop, exhibiting artists will have a
chance to discuss their work and
receive critique from a professional
artist.
Entry forms will be accepted via
mail at the Schauer Center (147 N.
Rural Street, Hartford) until Friday, Feb.
6, 2015. Entry fee to exhibit artwork
and attend the workshop is $20; the
public is invited to attend the workshop
for a fee of $5. For an entry form or
more information, call Gallery Exhibit
Coordinator Greg Torgeson at 262844-5257 or visit WRAAWrap.com or

Germantown Fire Department

seeking Paid-on-Call staff
The Germantown Fire Department (GFD)
is looking for men and women who want to
make a difference in our community by
becoming a Paid-on-Call Firefighter or EMT.
The work is hard but the rewards are great.
The GFD is a combination fire department, which means there are a small number
of staffed firefighters but the majority of the
members are paid-on-call. That means when
an emergency incident occurs firefighters
come from their homes to the fire stations to
respond. While this is cost effective, we
need you, We Need You to become a member of our team.
If you want to be part of a dynamic
group of men and women who are willing to
provide emergency service to their community 24 hours a day, We Need You. If you
ever saw an ambulance or fire truck
responding to an emergency or witnessed a
car accident and wished you had the knowledge to help, We Need You.
If you want to go home knowing you
made a difference in someones life, or
saved someones property, We Need You.
We will provide you with the training to
be a firefighter and EMT, with the equipment

Its been quite some time since youve

bought new carpeting for your home, and it is
starting to show. What was once soft and stain
free is no longer. Its time you replaced the carpeting, and while there are many factors to
consider from pile cut to fiber to performance
rating, the one that has got you stumped is
color. You know you dont want white or black
carpeting, but beyond that, you have no idea.
Carpeting can be costly, and once you purchase it and arrange to have it installed, theres

usually no turning back. Youre stuck with the

color you selected, so it better be right. Here
are some tips to help you through the color
dilemma.
What is the size of the space? Generally,
lighter colors open up a space, while darker
colors close it in, making for a cozier feel.
While dark colored carpeting will hide more
stains, it could make your small spaces appear

Great Advertising Opportunity!!

The partials I have had since December have been
adjusted and fit good but make my mouth just feel so
uncomfortable some days. The tops make my mouth feel
really full and bulky even though they dont hurt. I have
been a lot happier since I got partials as now I am able to
smile and my lips look fuller so my face doesnt seem to
droop. I am in advertising so having nice teeth and talking
properly is extremely important to me. I want other
alternatives to just regular partials. I'm missing almost all
back teeth except for two, so I have upper and lower partials
currently with the clear clips. Lastly, can you tell me if
insurance will pay for this?
Dear Lisa, I am glad you received partials and are
adapting to them! I refer to partial dentures and dentures as
temporaries in my practice. That is because I want every
patient to have stable teeth, which ideally stay in your
mouth and dont have to be removed at night. While not
everyone is a candidate for fixed implant dentistry it
certainly is a great goal.
When people wear partials-even comfortable partialsmany things happen. First you lose bone where your back
teeth were pulled. The lack of roots in the bone cause the
bone to deteriorate and the movement of the partials adds to
bone loss. Next, you get expansion of the maxillary sinuses.
This is because the roots of the back teeth hold the sinuses
up and when the teeth are removed the sinuses expand in a
process called pneumatization. Lastly, the clasps of partials
move when you chew on the false teeth. This movement is
accentuated on the clasped teeth which often become lose
and need to be removed at a later date.
So the solution is to have dental implants and fixed
bridges. If you have bone loss or the sinuses have expanded
you may require sinus lifts and or bone grafting prior to
placement of implants. Placing implants will stimulate and
preserve bone. Loss of teeth and rubbing on your skin by
partials cause bone loss. So our goal in dentistry is to
preserve bone at all costs! So placing implants before too
much bone loss has occurred will greatly preserve your
options as you age. I lecture to other dentists about
Upgradeable Dentistry, which allows people to go from
dentures to implant supported dentures or even implant
supported bridges as their budget allows. So even though
insurance doesnt cover this level of complex dentistry we

irreversible bone loss is the next step in your dental
journey and we would be honored to help you reach that
next level of care to improve your smile, your chewing

Citizen input important to the

2015-17 education budget process
BY STATE SUPERINTENDENT TONY EVERS
My goal for judging education policy
and reform efforts is always: Is it good for
kids. In looking at the governors proposed 2015-17 budget for education, on
balance it will not help our childrens education. It will in fact leave a legacy of less
for Wisconsin students.
So what does an educator, parent, or
grandparent do? Now is the time to talk
among families and friends, within schools
and communities. Study the impact of the
governors proposed education budget.
What does it mean to have per pupil revenue limits frozen for the biennium, to have
no additional supports for students with
significant needs to help them overcome a
disability or language barrier, to have less
money to spend for our local schools? The
heating and electric bills will not go down;
the cost of running buses to transport kids
is at the mercy of fuel prices. We absolutely must have teachers and textbooks. So
school administrators and school boards
will again be asked to do more with less.
Will they eliminate the few remaining field
trips; scale back the science labs, music
programs, or hands-on learning opportunities that help kids thrive; or will it be another whack at educator pay and benefits.
The cuts are coming, and its important to
know how your communitys public
schools will cope.
As we learn more of what this budget

Tony Evers
proposal means, its also important to tell
your elected officials. Whether through a
letter or e-mail, a phone call or testimony
at upcoming budget hearings, legislators
need to know what their electorate thinks.
Evidence of how this budget proposal will
negatively impact students in each legislators district matters. Legislators can
reshape the 2015-17 budget. They can
transform it from a legacy of less to a
spending plan that supports our kids and
their future.

Local wrestlers qualify for state tournament

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
Menomonee Falls qualified five
wrestlers for the state individual tournament
during the Falls sectional Feb. 21.
The state individual wrestling tournament will be held at the Kohl Center in
Madison Feb. 26-28. Eric Wunsch won the
113 weight class while Bill Holz won the
120 weight class for Menomonee Falls sectional titles. Austin Lasanske (106), Jake
McMahon (145) and Tyler Simcock (170)
finished second at the sectional to also
qualify for the state meet.
Wunsch started the day with a forfeit
win and followed that with an 8-3 decision
over Sam Boerner of Cedarburg in the semifinal. He won the 113 title with a pin over
Joey Fischer of Homestead.
Holz started the day with a pin over
Tariq Boseman of Milwaukee King and followed that with a technical fall over Jimmy
Nguyen of Germantown. He won the
weight class with a 6-0 win over Colton
Ryan of Cedarburg.
Lasanske started the day with a pin over
Jared Yoder of Nicolet and followed that
with a 2-0 win over Cooper Fergus of
Whitefish Bay. He was pinned by Zack
Szohr in the title match. McMahon started
the day with a 6-1 decision over Joey Miller
of Pius XI and followed that with a pin over
Ryan Merkel of Hamilton. He lost to Kelvin
Yde of Arrowhead 7-6 in the title match in
an ultimate tie breaker.
It was the perfect way to start wrapping up a senior season. Its the greatest
thing in high school athletics just to make it
to state, McMahon said.
Simcock started the day with a pin over
Marquan Holmes of Milwaukee King and
followed that with a 3-2 decision over Ben
Sciortino of Hamilton. Simcock was pinned
by Ryder Sigler of Cedarburg in the title
match.
Theres never any guarantees on this
day. We knew a couple kids had really
good shots, Menomonee Falls Coach Jim
McMahon said. There were a lot of 50-50
matches out there and I think we did well on
those today. I think our kids came to wrestle
pretty well.
He then added: Five (qualifiers) is a
good number.
McMahon added he is proud of his
team and hoped that team members who
didnt qualify for state still had a positive
experience in the program.
Even the kids who didnt qualify for the
state tournament still wrestled well today,
McMahon said.

McMahon also mentioned the parents

who supported their children in the program and noted how the home gym was
packed for the sectional.
Its pretty cool for high school
wrestling when you get packed gyms,
McMahon said.
Hamilton qualified three wrestlers for
state: John Rybka at 182, Jake Macaluso at
220 and Brad Biswell at 285. Rybka started the day with an 8-2 decision over
Darnell Granberry of Wauwatosa and followed that with a 7-2 decision over Matt
Gottleib of Whitefish Bay. He lost a 7-5
decision to Daniel Sorensen of Arrowhead
but secured second place on the wrestleback with a 10-2 major decision over Chris
Azcueta of Nicolet.
Macaluso started the day with a pin
over Jawaun Battle of Milwaukee King and
followed that with a 2-1 decision over Steve
Meyer of Whitefish Bay. He won the 220
sectional title with a pin over Keyshawn
Carr of Pius XI.
Biswell started the day with a forfeit win
and followed that with a pin over Lorry
Venturi of Wauwatosa. He was pinned in
the title match by Kyle Colum of Cedarburg.
Szohr was Germantown's sole qualifier.
He started the day with a pin over Jacob
Collison of Wauwatosa and followed that
with a technical fall over Tom Dineen of
Marquette before finishing the day with the
pin over Lasanske.
Feb. 26 results
The state individual wrestling tournament started Feb. 26. At 106, Austin
Lasanske of Menomonee Falls lost to Devin
De Los Angles of Beaver Dam, 2-0. Also,
Zack Szohr started the tournament with a
major decision over Caleb Ziebell of
Slinger but then was pinned by Aaron
Schulist of Mukwonago. He was scheduled
for a match in the consolation bracket Feb.
27.
At 113, Eric Wunsch of Menomonee
Falls lost a 9-2 decision to Tyus White of
West Allis Central. Wunsch was scheduled
for a match in the consolation bracket Feb.

started the tournament with a pin over Brett
Kieslich of Union Grove but then lost a 1-0
decision to Nathan Smith of Mukwonago.
Holz was scheduled for a match in the consolation bracket Feb. 27.
At 145, Jake McMahon of Menomonee

Menomonee Falls in a Division I regional
semifinal Feb. 24, which was enough to lift
the Blackshirts to a 58-47 win over
Menomonee Falls.
Menomonee Falls trailed by five points
after the first quarter and closed the gap to
22-20 following a basket by Jessica
Boerner at the 5:10 mark of the second
quarter. Both teams were scoreless for more
than a minute but then two free throws by
Souths Emily Schumacher started the seven
point run which gave the Blackshirts a 2920 lead with 2:7 left before halftime.
Menomonee Falls trailed at halftime 34-

Menomonee Falls cut the South lead to

Boys basketball: Germantown

tops Homestead
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
Germantown beat North Shore
Conference rival Homestead for the second
time this season Feb. 20, but it likely will not
be the last time the teams will meet this season.
Germantown beat the Highlanders 6763 to clinch sole possession of the conference title.
Six in a row, weve got the shirts being
made. Eight out of nine, Germantown
Coach Steve Showalter said afterward.
He added that it was important for
Germantown to have the title on its own.
This is our first goal. This is why we play
the game and this why these guys want to be
Germantown Warhawks because of a night
like this, Showalter said. You walk in here
(and) for high school basketball, you cant
beat this atmosphere.
Homestead lead 15-14 after the first
quarter but a three point basket by Juwan
McCloud gave Germantown a 24-22 lead
with just over four minutes left in the second
quarter. Germantown held a five-point lead
at halftime and had a 39-29 lead after Brian
Studer converted a three point basket at the
6:31 mark of the third quarter.
But Homestead outscored Germantown
6-2 over the next several minutes to start a
comeback. Homestead took a 49-47 lead
with four seconds left in the quarter. But
McCloud converted a three point basket and
a free throw after being fouled to give
Germantown a 54-53 lead at the 5:41 mark
of the fourth quarter.
Those guys are big and long and we
were having trouble scoring around the basket. So we had to figure out some other
things to do, so were were calling his
(McClouds) number, he had the green light

to either shoot or pass, and he did a pretty

good job with it, Showalter said.
Germantown held onto the lead the rest
of the way, as Kyle Theis, Dwayne Lawhorn
Jr. and Max Keefe converted free throws to
hold off Homestead. McCloud led
Germantown with 22 points while Keefe,
