WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY

'Wireless communication in a Pacom system'

OVERVIEW
The Pacom solution supports two different options of wireless back up between the eld controller and the Base station or TransIT. With
support for GPRS and GSM modems, the system allows for a wireless data and a wireless dial up connection.

SOLUTION
The GPRS modem provides a packet switched data communication channel between the eld controller and Base Station or TransIt,
generally serving as a backup to the onboard Ethernet, thus maintaining an always online connection.
The GSM modem establishes a wireless data connection, working the same in principle then as a traditional modem dial up connection.
Both types of modems can be connected to the Pacom eld controller using serial communications or the GPRS can be connected using
Ethernet. The modem will allow communication over the wireless network and a GPRS Gateway will route the data from different sites to
the Base station or TransIT. Please refer to the below architecture. In a scenario using a GSM modem, no Gateway will be required.
While a wireless solution is preferably used as a back up to an ordinary ethernet or dial up connection, both types of wireless connections
can also be congured to serve as a primary connection. For example, on remote locations where no ordinary network is available.

CONSIDERATIONS
Using the serial port between the modem and eld controller provides a couple of advantages. Firstly the ethernet port will not be
occupied. Using the ethernet port requires an additional gateway if there is a need to connect both to ethernet and GPRS. Secondly, a
modem with a serial connector is a more cost effective solution (ultimately depends on vendor).
The coverage and quality of the wireless connection will vary depending on country, territory, as well as the operator providing the wireless
service. In general, a GSM service has better coverage then a GPRS service on remote locations for example.
GPRS is a data service delivering higher data speed than regular GSM connection.

ARCHITECTURE FOR GPRS COMMUNICATION

The wireless support has been tested with the
