Applications of Engineering Design
Course Outline
OBJECTIVES
This course covers the basic concepts of engineering design (needs assessment, problem
formulation, abstraction and synthesis, analysis and implementation).
The course consists of lectures (3 hours/week), laboratory and tutorial work (2 hour/week)
The major component of the course is a term design project

HOVERCRAFT PROJECT
The hovercraft project is an integrated design project for 2nd
year engineering students. The goal of the project is to
construct a moving platform (hovercraft) which satisfies
requirements in three major areas: structural, fluid mechanics
and electrical control system

DELIVERABLES:
- Written reports (The content of the reports will be coordinated with the apsc 258 instructor):
1st Preliminary Project Report (Feasibility study)
Includes the problem formulation, literature research, project planning details and a feasibility report on
what are the particular topics that the team will have to pay attention to or acquire additional knowledge
about.
2nd Preliminary Project Report (Preliminary design)
The preliminary design report includes various concepts and design alternatives to achieve the project
goal using provided material
material. It is a set of drawings
drawings, free-hand sketches and preliminary calculations
used to analyze design alternatives. Ultimately, the best alternative should be explained in more detail.
Final project report
Includes a formal analysis of the chosen design option (best alternative). Details of calculations, formal
drawings off important components, assemblies and the bill off materials all need to be present.
- Oral presentation + poster
- Performance test and evaluation performed by professional engineers.
- Design book
