English HW#1

Sumaway, Christine Joyce L (1E1)

What is the significance of reading in your life as a future proffessional?
In most careers, it is inevitable that one has to use the skill of reading. Reading is done by
those in the field of Medicine, Law, Business, Engineering, Architechture, Music, and etc. The
purpose of reading is basically to acquire information about a certain topic, but beyond learning
we must develop our skills of decoding and interpreting these information given to us.

As a future Economist, one must learn how to interpret reports and data given to you; as
so one can summarize these into graphs, charts, and tables. For us to give out the correct output,
we must grasp the full gist to understand the situation of the report. If one fails to understand
what is being said, then we will not be able to relay the information to others. Majoring in this
said course, reading practices helps me develop life-long skills that I will need for my future
career. Beyond grasping technical terms and concepts, reading helps enhance my critical thinking
skills about situational problems and to formulate different approaches in how I can address
these issues.

In summary, in my career path, decoding, analyzing, problem solving, fluency, and active
engagement skills in reading are utilized. It follows the same pattern as the step by step process
on how we present data from our researches and findings in our studies about supply, demand,
GDP, GNP, and the like. It is important that we develop these skills so that we may become
competent proffessionals not just in Economics but in any of our chosen fields. As we learn
more, we will be able to communicate more and share the knowledge we have gained with others
as well.

In the reading stages, where are you at right now? Discuss by giving example tasks you do on
that stage
Stage four, multiple viewpoints, practices analyzing and interpreting texts into different
perspectives. This skill is developed during the the later elementary levels and high school levels.
This requires us to be able to use our critical thinking skills into going beyond what is given or
the obvious. It is our role as readers to be able to look at article at another angle.
I would personally claim that I am at this stage. In my past school, Assumption Antipolo,
we were given the tasks to read at least 2-4 literary novels in a school year not counting other
articles, essays, short stories and the like. It has also been a routine to have a summer home
reading program wherein students are encouraged to read novels from a selection list and must
be able to write down important details about the story. In my fourth year of high school, we
were given the privilege to take up one of the most beloved pieces of literature by Victor Hugo,
Les Miserables. Having been most familiar with the story, our classes are mostly discussions and
reports on our views and perspectives on what happens within the story. We were able to
recognize multiple themes such as the identities of each character, and how Jean Valjean is left
without recognition in the end (he was left with only a stone to mark his grave). Throughout out
my stay in Assumption, I was also exposed to beautiful classic readings such as Shakespeare. As
some may not know, Shakespeare would incorporate social issues present during his time into his
written works such as in Macbeth and Hamlet.
Having been exposed to this kind of practice, I am able to appreciate literature in a more
different light. It has been able to widen my perspective and led me to keep an open mind. To
end I wish to end with none but one of the most mind boggling soliloquys of Shakespeare's
Hamlet To be or not to be: that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the
slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against the sea of troubles, and by
opposing end them? To die: to sleep; no more
