hospital covering a catchment area of ~1,000,000 square km, which is literally Bigger than Texas. We care for some of the
nations sickest and most socially disadvantaged people, many with diseases not seen elsewhere in the country.
Spectacular national parks surround Alice Springs. The lifestyle is laid back with an emphasis on outdoor activities and the
arts. The central desert region of Australia is unique. It is a friendly, welcoming place especially suited to trainees with a
sense of adventure and those interested in fourth world health issues, not generally seen by most doctors in Australia.

environment and disease/ visit remote communities and retrieve patients with the RFDS/ complete community and rural
training requirements for general paediatrics/ complete projects/ accept increasing responsibility for patient management.

Royal Childrens Hospital Centre for Adolescent Health

For the 2013 clinical year the Centre for Adolescent Health, Royal Childrens Hospital, Melbourne has two training positions
on offer, both of which satisfy the requirements for developmental and psychosocial training:
Adolescent Medicine Fellow: an excellent training position which is clinically focused and an integral part of the team
providing inpatient and outpatient general medical care to adolescent patients of the hospital. The trainee functions as a
junior consultant on the ward service roster (supported a 2nd on-call consultant) and is also part of the RCH Eating Disorders
team. The clinical case load is mixed and varied with complex medical and psycho-social presentations. This position is ideal
both for trainees wanting to pursue a career in adolescent medicine and for those pursuing a general or subspecialty path
but wanting some extra expertise with adolescents.
High Risk Youth Fellow: A fascinating opportunity, with a mix of clinical service, policy development, communication and
liaison responsibilities. The clinical service components are at off-site services provided by the RCH: the Young Peoples
Health Service (for homeless youth in the Melbourne CBD) and Adolescent Forensic Health Service (working with Youth
Justice clients- ie outpatients for inpatients). There will be time spent at the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (Fitzroy)
which will be a mix of clinical service, policy writing and liaison. Hours are 9-5 M-F, with no expectation but the opportunity to
participate in the ward service roster by negotiation.
These positions are designed for post-exam trainees (with those sitting in 2012 welcome to apply) and will satisfy RACP D&P
training, elective general paediatric (or other specialty) time and some CCH training requirements. Multidisciplinary team is a
feature for both positions and supervision is excellent. Annual leave will be at a mutually convenient time.
In 2013 the two positions will be combined with hospital and community opportunities divided equally between the two
trainees. One will spend time at Youth Justice, one at the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service and both will provide service to
marginalised youth in the CBD and provide outpatient and inpatient service, including work with the eating disorders team.
This arrangement has been a success in 2012.
