Learning Diabilities : Dyslexia

On 4th August 2014 untill 8th August 2014, all PISMP students were
instructed to have a week of experiences in school for School Based Experiment
Program (SBE). As for me, I selected Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil Ayer Tawar.
The task that was given is identify a problem that releated in Remedial Education on
teaching and learning problem.
Problem that I identified in my research on remedial education are a few
students facing dyslexia problem in terms of various angles such as writing skills.
Their main problem is they cannot distinguish the letters b and d. They wrote letter b
replace with letter d, for example when the teacher given a spelling, I found that the
student wrote bus as dus. According to a study, published in Dyslexia, found that
children with dyslexia had a final product of lesser quality even though they made
multiple revisions to their written works. In my opinion this problem occurred because
the students pay less attention when the teacher teach them and also the students
are lack of exercise on writing skills. According to, women working in a cigar factory
in the 1950s revealed that even after years of practice people can become faster at a
task. So in a conclusion, this problem can be plagued by giving exercise to them so
that students can identify their mistakes and can improve it day by day.
In addition, I find that some students are having trouble in reading or
pronouncing words correctly. I realised this problem, when the teacher choose
randomly some student to read out but eventually they could not read it fluently. They
faced problem such as difficulty in recognising sound in words, reverse, omit or add
letters and so on. These characteristics can be seen in children with dyslexia
because according to the study by Samuel T. Orton, 1925 he described the condition
as strephosymbolia, which referred to the twisting of words and how dyslexics find
it difficult to match the visual word information with spoken word forms. I suggest
that, to avoid this kind of problem the student must take initiative to study by their self
and also the teachers must play their role to guide them. This is because I found that
this problems occur due to lack of students responsibilities and they do not practising
reading as a habit.
In conclusion, remedial teachers play a big role in teaching them. As we all
know remedial class is full of fun but it depends on the teacher how they teach their
students.
