Baddiel'sbigbrotherIvor,ascriptwriterwhoworkswithDermot

Butthe1970swerenoisolatedgoldenageinthemovement's
eightdecadehistory.Haboniminthe1980snurturedthe
precociouscomedytalentsofSachaBaronCohen("IleftwhenI
was15,butSachawasabigcheeseinHabonimandstayedmuch
longer,"Baddielremembers),DanPattersonandMarkLeveson,
cocreatorsofMocktheWeek,andtheBaftawinningproducer
ofPeepShow,RobertPopper.Habonimeventuallyspreadfrom
itsUKbaseto21countries,anditsCanadianoutpostcounted
amongitsmembersSethRogen,starofKnockedUp,anda
futurecollaboratorwithBaronCohen.Backinthe1940s,
HabonimmembersincludedtheplaywrightSirArnoldWesker,
andinthe1950s,thefivetimesOscarnominatedfilmdirector,
MikeLeigh.
ThisremarkablerollofhonouriscelebratedinEntertainingthe
Nation!,anewexhibitionatLondon'srecentlyrefurbished
JewishMuseum,whichexaminesthehighlevelsofparticipation
bytheJewishcommunityinBritain'sculturallife,fromHarold
PinterandSidJamesthroughtoMarcBolanandAmy
Winehouse.Amongtheexhibitsondisplayisapictureofthe
youngBaronCohen,longbeforeAliG,BoratandBrunomade
himahouseholdname,performinginashowwithhisfellow
Habonimniks.
Allyouthgroupsaimtohelpteenagersnavigatethechoppy
watersbetweenchildhoodandadulthood,andsometryto
encouragethemtodiscover,intheprocess,asenseofthemselves
andtheirpotential.Buttherewas,itseems,somethingextrathat
distinguishesHabonimor,asithasbeenknownsince1980
whenitmergedwithanothergroup,HabonimDrorthathas
ledtoitbeinglabelleda"comedytalentfactory".
"That'snothowIrememberit,"reflectsDavidBaddiel."Because
IwasyoungerthanthegroupIwasmixingwiththerethey
weremyolderbrother'sfriendsitrepresentedformemorea
chancetolearnaboutfashionandpunkandpolitics,andabout
howtobeayoungadult.Butitdidhavethistraditionofputting
onimpromptushows,andsoitwasatHabonimthatIdidmy
firsteverperformance.Intheshows,therewouldbedancing
sixgirls,allofwhomIfancied,plusoneratherambiguousbloke,
performing,bizarrelyinretrospect,toEltonJohn's"Funeralfor
aFriend".Andthentherewouldbewhatwecalled'ziggim'.Itis

melancholycomedyoffilmssuchasSecrets&LiesandAnother
YearoweslittletoHabonim,hefreelyacknowledgesthatheowes
itagreatdebtwhenitcomestohisdistinctivemethodofworking
withactors."Asawriter,Idon'tachievemuchsittingonmyown
inaroomatadesk.Ipreferworkingcommunally,asagroup,
withactors,andthat,I'msure,comesfromHabonim."
OfHabonim'sthreefoundingprinciplesofsocialism,Zionism

expressive.Wearenotcompletelylikeeveryoneelse.ButIdon't
believethereisatraditionofJewishcomedyinBritainasthereis
inAmericawithshowslikeSeinfeld.Ifitisdeveloping,ithas
onlyhappenedveryrecently.Iwasoneofthefirstcomedians,for
example,tostanduponstageandtalkaboutwhatitreally
meanstobeJewish."

politicianswithaquickwitappealtovoters.Butpoliticsat
HaboniminMikeLeigh'sdaywasanythingbutalaughing
matter."Whilemycontemporarieswerediscoveringcoffeebars,
atHabonimwewerediscussingradicalpolitics.Wejoinedthe
campaignagainstcapitalpunishment,forexample,andwenton
theantinuclearmarchestoAldermaston."That,hesays,wasthe
healthysideofthepoliticaldimension,"buttherewerealsoalot
ofspeakersfromIsraelfeedinguspoliticalpropaganda".
WhichiswhereZionismthethird,andintoday'sclimate
potentiallymostcontroversialpillarofHabonimcomesin.For
ArnoldWesker,whoseplaysRootsandChickenSoupwithBarley
drawonhisownJewishbackground,thereferencetoZionismin
Habonim'smissionstatementhasasimpleandunchanging
meaning:"AZionist,verysimply,issomeonewhobelievesthe
Jewsshouldhavealandoftheirown".
Itistherestoftheworld,ratherthanHabonim,thathastriedto
changeandmisinterpretthemeaningofZionism,heprotests,so
thatthewordcannowmistakenlyencapsulateaperceived
hostilitytoPalestiniancommunitiesinIsrael.Toemphasisehis
point,hequotesfromtheHabonimhandbookhewasgivenwhen
hejoinedattheageof13in1945."TheMovementinstilsinits
membersthespiritoffriendlinesstowardsallracesandcreeds
andkindlinesstowardsalllivingcreatures."
Weskerillustrateshispointbydescribingsomehostile
questioningheoncefacedataninternationalfestivaloverhis
linkswithHabonim."Iwasasked:'Isittrue,MrWesker,that
youwereamemberofaZionistorganisationandifsocanyou
explainwhy?'Ialmostcouldn'tcomprehendthequestion.'Yes,I
wasamemberofaZionistyouthorganisationcalledHabonim,
whichIjoinedbecauseIenjoyedsingingIsraelisongsand
dancingIsraelidancesandthegirlswereprettyandeagerto
sharekisses.'Thereply,thoughaimingtodismissthemanwho'd
imaginedhe'dunearthedaghastlypast,wasnotwithoutsome
truth."
Fromitsinception,Habonimwasquiteopenlyworkingtodraw
youngJewsfromtheDiasporatowhatwasthenthePalestinian
Mandatewheretheycouldmakenewlivesonutopian,leftwing
kibbutzim,egalitariancommunitiesworkingtotransformthe
desertintocitrusgroves.Thespiritofthekibbutzimcreative,
anarchic,makingtheirownentertainmentwasatthevery
heartoftheapproachtakentoalltheiractivitiesbyHabonim
groupsintheUK.SocialismandZionismatthisstagewenthand
inhand,andmoneyraisedbyHaboniminthiscountryfunded
sevenkibbutziminIsrael.
ArnoldWeskerrecallsfromhisownHabonimdaystalksby
"peoplefromIsraelwhocametoguideandinformus,not
encourageorentice,aboutwhatwasonofferthere,andthenleft
ustomakeachoice.Myfirstgirlfrienddidgoandsettlethere,as
didmanyothers".
Overthedecades,though,thatemphasisonsettlinginIsrael
appearstohavebeendiluted.ByMikeLeigh'sday,energieswere
directedmoretorecruitinghabonimnikstospendagapyearon

Jewishorganisation.Yetthathasnevermeantanarrowreligious
definitionofwhoisJewish.IvorBaddielrecallsthatinhisday"a
fewmemberswouldwearskullcapsandadherencetokosher
lawswasnominal".Atcurrentcamps,JemSteinreports,thereis
sometimesareligiouselement,butonlywhenitfitsinwithwhat
elseishappeningthere.
TheessentiallynonreligiousnatureofHabonimis,potentially,
thefinalfactorthatexplainsitssuccess,overandaboveother
Jewishyouthorganisations,innurturingcreativefolkwiththe
emphasislatterlyoncomedians.Thedevoutdonot,afterall,
havemuchofatrackrecordinlaughingatthemselves,ormaking
otherpeoplelaugh.Habonim,IvorBaddielsuggests,standsout
initsfieldbecause"alltheothersarestraighterorstricter".And
inpracticalterms,hesays,pastmembershipcancertainlyhelp
whenyouarestrugglingtomakeyourmark.
"Earlyoninmycareer,likemanyotherhopefulwriters,Iusedto
turnupattheopencommissioningmeetingsfortheRadio4
comedyshow,WeekEnding,tryingtogetoneofmyjokes
includedinthescript.DanPattersonwasproducingatthetime,
andIrememberattheendofthemeeting,whenhewanted
