Sal 8sMcCarron's Armored Cavalry, a formidable fighting force
commanded by the wiy veteran Archibald McCarron, enjoyed a
brillant reputation in the early Stst century as the Capelan
Confederacy's premier mercenary unit. MeCarron had ite love
for House Davion, his Liao empioyers: primary rival for power in
the Inner Sphore. His loathing for Davion was shared by Marcus
Barton, one of McCarron's fiercest MectiWarriors and a talented
strategist. In 3015, Archie McCarron put Marcus Barton in com-
mand of the MAC's second regiment, naming it Barton's Reg-
ment. Archie ordered Marcus to create the biggest, meanest
ascaultregimert the Inner Sphere had ever seen. Marcus oid,
‘and for the noxthiry yoars notasingle Successor State escaped
defeat by Barton's s0ders.
Givan Archie McCarron's grudge against Davion, the worlds
cf the Federated Suns remained the MAC’s primary raiding
targets, Between 3022 and 3024, in retaliation or Davion attacks
against Liao words, McCarron led his unit on a merry romp
‘through Davion space, sirkinghere, stealing there, andbloodying
Davion’s nose everywhere the MAC hit. One of MeCarron’s first
targois wae the Capellan border werld of Mariette, home fo tha
impregnaole Fortes Bourgogne. Barion's Regiment hit the for,
‘and proved to the galaxias that “impregnable” was not in the
MAC's vocabulary. Twenty-two years later, after the end of the
Fourth Succession War, Davion rebuilt and refed Bourgogne
with state-of-the-art defenses, virtual daring Marcus Barton and,
Fis troops to knock it down again. Barton took the dare, and not
justto pul off another piiant, miltary expiot; ne had a personal
reason. General Lester J, Otto had recently been named com-
ander of the fortress on Marlette, and Barton bore Otto an
‘almost fanatical hatred. Forty years ago, Lester J. Otto had
‘dshonored Barton's father, and Marcus had sworn revenge. Ha
had already blown one chance; he wouldn'tlet that happen again.
This tme he would take his entire regiment, and do the job right.
HOW TO USE THE SCENARIOS
Each of the scenarios in this book re-creates a battle or
fencounter in tho campaign ‘ought by Barton's Ragimant on
‘Marcus Barton's second vist io Mariette. McCarron’s Armored
Cavalry dtfers slightly from previous scenario packs, in that tha
‘soenarioe are all interrelated, representing various phacos of a
‘campaign. Playars may keep Irack of the rasults of one engage-
‘ment todetermine the forces for a folowing scenario. Though the
‘scenarios in McCarron's Armored Cavalry can bo fought ind:
Vidualy it players desire, they are designed to work as a cam-
paign, whicn makas this scenaro pack more flexible than other
BattleTech scenario packs, Because the defending forces can
be randomly ganerated, each batle is diferent, even if the
cation and circumstances are the same. MeCarron's Armored
Cavalry can be replayed over and over, and will offer new
excitement each time.
The scenario rules include all information nocossary to
understand and play the game stuation. Each scenario begins
with a parscnal accountof the angagement and ends wth a brief
historical framework for the batt.
‘The Game Set-Up sections provide special game informa-
tion naeded to play the scenarios, including instructions on how
10 lay out the mapsheets, directions for special terran features,
and suggestions on the appropriate BattleTech rules io use.
‘Attacker and Defender forcas for each scenario are de-
‘scribed in detail. This information includes damage, problems, or
‘special abilities of any 'Mechs or forces atthe start of the batte..
‘Ase noted is each ‘Meck’s starting position on the map, or whera.
and when it enters if the ‘Mech arrives after the battle has already
begun. Because the scenarios in MeCarron’s Armored Cavalry
are fought as a structured campaign and net as individual battles,
the defending forces for any given scenario frequently dependon
- the outcome of the previous scenario. The defending forces for
‘some-scenerios are designed by tho defending player. Eachouch
scenario provides @ number of Scenario Points and a table of
available defenses. The detender can customize his defenses
Using a rendom dice roll or by simply choosing forces up to the
‘number of Scenario Points availabe.
‘Several scenarios include ground foreas for one or both
sides.
Special Rules are described next. the scenario uses rules
not covered in the general BattleTech rules, they are discussed
as Special Rules
‘The final section presents the Vietory Conditions. These
determine the outcome of the encounter, and vary from scenario.
‘o'scenario. combat, an action rarely continues unt one side Is
obliterated. For this reason, the Victory Conditions usually list
speciicobjectvestor one or bothopponents. Asin actual combat,
both sidas may claim victory in some engagements, based solely
‘on whether or not tactical objectives were won.
‘The moditled Skil Roll target numbers for the Gunnery and
Pieting Skis of each member of Baron's Regiment are thease
target numbers for any combat rolls. These numbers may be
further moditied by range, terran, and action, depending on the
combat situation. The full ange of skits provided in MechWar-
rlor, Second Edition, can be usedtohelp determine the outcome
cf any encounter involving this unit.
All other MechWartiors in the scenarios use the standard
BattleTech Gunnery and Pilcting Skil Levels, which are used
‘normally in the game. spectic skl levels are not Qven, assume
Piling Skill Lovel of § and a Gunnery Skill Level of 4
Some of these scenarios use the MechWarrlor, Second
Ezition, rulas. Players should familiarize themselves with that
‘game system before attempting to play these sconatioe..
RUNNING A CAMPAIGN
Torun McCarron's Armored Cavalry as a campaign, vse
the following special rules,
4, Barton's foroas must win thro of the sic Field scenarios
The aitackers must continue fighting field battles unti they have
won three, at which point they ean move on to the Stannic Bricge:
scenario. I they win fewer than three field fights, Barton does not
reach the bridge.
2. Barton must win the Stannic Bridge battle to continue his
advance.
‘2, Barton's forces must win two of the Ring of Death soe-
nario. The attackers mustfight unl they win wo, orelee the Ring
‘ends their advance and the game.
“4 Barton rust win both Wall ight. ithe loses one, he can
try again with new forces.SS,
‘The Final Battie
‘Three different scenarios can be played as the dimax ofthe
‘campaign, each presenting an alternats erding. The attacking
force's level of success in the eauly stages of the cempaign
determines which end scenario will be played.
It Barton's foroe wins three faléfighte without taking a loss,
‘wins the Bridge and takes the Ring while losing one or no fights,
run Otto's Last Stand, p. 54.
Run the Showdown sconario, p. 58, undor the following
circumstances: t Barton's force wins three fel fights, taking only
tne loss, then loses only one fight in the Ring: if Barton's force
loses twofield fghts but only one Rng ight; fBarton’e forceloses,
ro field fights but loses two Ring fights.
|i Barton's force loses two Field fights and two Ring fights but
‘axe sill able to advance, play Barton's Folly, p. 58.
Losing either of the Wall battles counts as.a loss againstthe
botter win tally. For oxample, f Barton's orce has one loss in the
field and loses one of the Wall fights, the Wall fight counts as a
‘second field loss. If Barton's force takes the maxmum numiber of
losses (two field and two Ring), play Barton's Folly aftorbroach-
Ing the Wal.
Historical Perspective
Historically, Barton won all his eld engagements and
smashed tha Stannie, but suffered two major defeats getting
through the Ring of Death“McCARRON’S ARMORED CAVALRY
Inthe year 3044, athe endotthe Warot 3039, Hanse Davion
decided to upgrade his detanses along the border of Maximilian
Liao's Capellan Confederation. He wanted to refit his existing
bases with new technology, in case House Liao started a new
campaign against him. The Federated Commonweaith had al
ready taken a beating from the Draconis Combino, and Hanso
Davion faced possibie attack by Romano Liao’s revitalized mil-
‘ary. frash from sucoesstul wars against the Duchy of Andurian
‘and the Magistracy of Canopus. Also, tho foarod MoCarron's
‘Armored Cavalry was rumored to be upgrading their equipment
with Star League technology. as well as-adding a seventh regi
mont.
‘Thefortress Bourgogne onthe planetMarettewas one of the
‘irstinstallations upgraded. Marcus Barton had already destroyed
Bourgogne once, and the Davion engineers interded to make it
as"Barton-proof’ as possbee. They rebuilt andeniarged the walls,
upgrading or replacing turrets and emplacements.
Finally, he engineers experimented with different types of
‘Mech traps. These traps could capture or destroy an enemy
"Mech before it could do any damago. Narlete's "Mech forces
were also upgraded. During te Fourth Succession War,
Marlatie's regiment had two ‘Mech battalions and one tank
battalion. Aftr the war, Merlette's forces became a full regiment
of the Capelian March Milita, atong with one additional battalion
serving a8 a planetary garrison
After reading the reporis on Malette's new defenses, Archie
‘MeCarron, Commander of McCarron's Armored Cavalry, decided
fo launch araid on Marlette totest the strength ofthe fertress and
the "Mech forces. McCarron chose the sixth regiment, known as
Baxter's Brawlers, to assault Bourgogne, and when field reports
reyealedthat Barion's mosthated ioe, Lester J. Otto, commanded
the detending forces, Barton assigned himself to the attack to
offertactcal and feidacvice, but actually o seek revenge. Scouts
‘on Marlette reported that a major parts chipmontwas oxpocted to
resupply both the forress and the Staval cy garrison. Baxter's
Brawlers were to attack Staval Space Port and steal whatever
‘hey could carry
Genoral Lester J. Otto, commander of Bourgogne, had
‘causad Barton's father, Thomias Barton, toresign fram the Davion
mmiitary in 2991, Thomas Barton and Lester Otto had bath been
candidates for 2 vacant generalship. Knowing that Thomas

infuence and poltical connections to win the promotion. Barton.
was asked to wat for the next available position.
Unwilling to wait, Tom Barton resigned his commission. The.
Davion High Command, angered by his acton, ordered Tom
Barton stripped of his ‘Mech and any athor miltary propery.
Barton's knowledge of Davion military operations made him a
‘security risk; Davion agents montored his movaments, ang he
found it vitally impossible to leave Davion space. Tom Barton
was forced to sell everything he owned, but finally in 2999 he
escaped into Steiner space. He never fully recovered from
Davion's betayal, and died a broken man, Hi eon, Marous,
‘swore vengeance agains! House Davion, and against Otto.
‘Marcus Barton made his plans carefully. Whila the Mariette
regiment engaged Baxter's Brawlers, Marcus would drop his
regiment on the other side of the Stannic Bridge. General Otio
‘could not foresee this attack. He only knew that sooner or later,
‘Marcus would come for him again. Butbecause he hadto protect
the parts shipment at Staval, General Otto could not mass his
foreos to face hie old enemy.
When the MAC forves artived in system, General Otto knew
‘rom the DropShip count that he taceda sizable army. He ordered
the first battalion of the Marlette CMM, the Mariette Rangers, to
back up the city garrison. When Baxter's Brawlers dropped on
Staval, Otto expected Barton to rush to the fort in a pincer
movernont,
Two days after the drop, Baxter's Brawlers attacked Staval.
‘Seeing no split in the enemy forces. Otto ordered the Rangers’
‘Second Battalion to rainforce the Staval defenders. On the third
day, the Brawlers engaged all the Mavlete forces sent to Staval.
(Otto kepta concemnad eyecon the number! DropShips stil in orbit,
although he knew that some were emoty to carry away plunder.
(On the fourth day, Baxier's Brawlers broke through Siava's
outer defenses and moved on the space port. The Rangers
reported losses, but did not ask for reinforcements. Later that
~afternoon, scouts reported 'Machs droppingon te far side o! the
‘Stannic Bridge. Upon learning thata ful regimenthadlanded near
the Slannic, General Ovo ordered the Rangers’ Third Battalion 19
‘engage the enemy forces before they reached the river, and tha’
battalion command lance to reinforce the bridge defenses.
Oto ordered the fortress garrison to deploy inside
Bourgogne's static daferse ring. He then sent a message to
Steval ordering combat-capable ‘Mechs to retum to the fortress.
‘25 soon as possible, hoping tha! the garrison could hold out until
reinforcements arrived. The frst battle reports that evening con-
firmed what Otto already guessed; Stannic Bridge's besiegers
were the Second Reament of the MAC, Barion's Regiment,
‘commanded by Colonel Marcus T. Barton.HISTORY OF BARTON'S REGIMENT
3015-25
13018, Archio McCarron put Marcus Barton in command of
the MAC's Second Regiment, renaming it Barton's Regiment.
Archie ordered Marcus to create the biggest, meanest assault
rogimont the innor Sphere had ever seen. Marcus did co, and for
thenext thy yearsnota single Successor State escaped defeat
by Barton's soldiers
Barton's first assignment came ageinst House Maik on
Elnat n 3015. Mark had been aunching repeated raids against
‘ammurition and tank manufacturing plants located on Einath,
causing serious disruptions in production. Barton's Regiment
ralieved ihe Blackwind Lancers, who had taken consderabie
losses fighting off continual attacks by Mark forces.
Barlonciscovered tat Marik was using the fortress Gorndack

“Twerty Sixth Lyran Guards, both under the command of General
Robert 8. Paterson.
‘Knowing that Gomndack was the base of operations, Barton
decided to take the probiom out atts source. He planned to stike
hard and fast on Ohrensen and get out witout taking any heavy
‘damage. A week later, Barton jumped into system, but found fon

On the ground the fight moved quickly. Barton had barely
established a defensive perimeter before Mari "Mechs wore

‘The surounding terrain—light woods and hile—provided the
perfect ground for Mankambushes. Using infantry and tanks, the
fortross commander placed several arrbushes to slow Barton
‘down, leaving al ofthe available ‘Mechs atthe fortress to form a
last line of defense.
Gorndack was not a iruo fortrose, but a fortified space port,
‘with a turreted defensive wall and several tank emplacements.
Infantry and tank bunkers were placad around the outside of the
wall. Gorndack also had three artilery pioces—two Sripers and
‘one Long Tom—for indirect tre. Barton's torces arrivedat the for

For five hours both sides slugged tout just beyond the walls
of the fort. Mark threw everything they had against tho MACs,
while Barton’s men pushed through. With his Warfiammers left
torso shot away and barely any armor left, Barton led the charge
that broke through the wail. The romnante of Gorndack’s forces
fled into the woods, leaving behind pockets of tanks and infantry.
By he cay's end Barton's Regiment had sacured the fortessarea,

ment.
‘While the victory plaased Archio McCarron, the number of
"Mechs Marcus lost did not. Barton had captured several Mechs
and had found a good cache of partsin Gomdack, but this dd not
‘coverthe costof replacing the Mechs that Barton needed to bring
fis regiment to full strength. Gomdack was one of the many forts
Barton destroyed, giving riee to the legend of Berton the For
Buster. Many commanders throughout the Inner Sphere believe
that Barton particularly erjoys attacking and destroying heavily
doferded installations.
BARTON'S REGIMENT RETURNS
Barton brought his regiment back up tofull force in 2016, only
tobreakitdown at he command of hisLiao employers. Davion had
‘stopped up raids on Liao worlds, and the battalions of Barton's
Flagiment were needed io garrison systems.
All of Barton'sbattalons saw heavy acton during the years ot
constant raiding from 3017 to 3020, The most noteworthy fight
Involved Wayne's Wreckers, garrisoned on Necromo. Davion had
ssant the marcenary unit Smithson's Chinese Bandits to gai
information about operationson the planet. The Bendits had heard
of he MAG, but nver fought them, so they had no dea what 10
‘expect. When the Bardits dropped on Necromo, they found cut.
Necromo is a dry, flat world, ileal for building the huge
‘equipment needed to repar DropShips. But large installation Is
dificult io protect, especaly when the enemy can attack from all
directons. The Wreckers posted a series of infantry units with tank
‘support toact as.an early waming system, enabiing the Wreckers’
"Meche to arrive before the cnomy.
‘The Bandits planned io hit the repair facility while taking as
litle damage as possible. They tried afeint, sending a small group
‘of’Mechs in from the south. When the spotters reported the small
strike force, Wayne sent his third compary, the Knights of Death,
toongage them.
Hehadjust given the orderwhen his spotters onthe west side
radioedin. A second force was coming, atleast a tattalion strong.
Wayne sworeatthe snooker play, bt there was nothing he could
do. AS he brought his ‘Mech forward, he reminded his men,
“Remember. its only worth destroying your’Mech ityou kil two of
theirs”The fight lasted for several hours. The Wreckers’ heavier
"Mechs finally stalled the Bandits. The Bandts tried to get around
the Wreckers, but ran into vibrabonbs and tanks,
‘The battle tumed in the Wreckers’ favor when ‘Mechs from
the Knights of Death thundered back from the fight to the south.
Not wanting io get pinned down, the Bandits retreated. They hac
learned something about Necromo's defenses, so he raid had not
‘beon attal logs. Major Wayne chased the retraating Bandis until
fhe was sure they were leaving, the ordered his urits to return.
‘By 3020, Barton had tired cf detencing against Davion raics.
He told everyone within oarshot, in his usual diplomatic fashion,
that it was te the raided became raiders—and if no one else
would do it, he woul.
HEART'S DESIRE
One day in 3022, Archie summoned Barton to his
office.
"What's up?" asked Barton ashe artered and satdown.
“Tve ota|job for you," Archie sald, watching Barton,

GOODBYE, BOURGOGNE
“Archie planned to demoralize Davion forces by attacking
Bourgogne. The fortress had rot been attacked in well over a
hundred years, which made ita prime target. Bourgogne was one
of five fortresses along the Oavion—Liao border used primarily as
resupply bases for the Capellan March Milita, and also as local
defens2 points fr each planet.
Barton landed near the forress, but far enough away that it
DDavion forces wanted him, they would have to come and get him.
‘As the MAC advanced toward Bourgogne. they reached the
Stannic Bridge, a three-rile span over the Bom River. The long,
‘navrow bridge meant Barton would have to send his Mechs over
insingle fle, making them easy targets during the crossing and on
the other side

‘As more ol the MAG crossed over, the Davion forces pulled
back. Marcus, enraged by what he called pety tactics. ordered the
retreating 'Mechshuntod down, Archieand Brion joined the hunt;
Barton destroyed a Davon Grusader and captured the com-
‘mander of the second company.
Not wanting to give the fortress time te react, Barton ordered
his men to advance. Wnen the MAC came within a mile of
Bourgogne, Davion's ‘Mechs, led by Colonel Wilson J. Winches
tor, attacked. The CMM forces engaged the adrancing MAC,
‘backed uo by infantry and fre support from bunkered tanks. The
fight went on for nearly a day, with each side rotating hurt ‘Mechs

forces broke through the CMM line and attacked the fort. Fearing
thathis unitwouldbecutofl, Winchester ordered themtowithdraw,
Concerned at the MAC's mounting losses aftr two days of
sioge, Archi ordered Barton to back out In a rare disagreement,
Barton refused, stating, “I came here to break this bastard, and
that's what 'm going 10 do. Put t 0 a vote.”
‘According fo MAC custom, each commander voted to stay or
leave. The majority voted o stay andfinish the ob. Archie granted
them one more day of drect assauit, butt they failed to break the

straight for the complexes. They were heading back to their drop
poirt, loaded with loot, when Lieutenant Woodruff Patterson
struck. He ordered his Blackhearts to pursue Baron's group and
set up the 28th Lyran Guard to attack the DropShips
‘The Blackheerts attacked mostly with long range fire. Barton
ordered his men to retum tire without engaging. AS Barton's

‘Attar the fret run, Pattercon erdorod hie’ Mechs fo scatter and

‘The Lyrane loft nearly acozen heavily damagedordestroyed
‘Mechs on the field. Barton's ’Mechs took some heavy hits, but
‘most stayed operational. Archie was both pleased and surprised
thatBarton had torn upso fow of hie own ‘Meche thistime around.
With tne Fourth Succession War beginning, both Archie and
Barton had cause to bless Barton's luck.
TAKING IT ON THE CHIN
‘When the Fourth Suocossion War began, Liao ordered four
of Archie's regiments to the planet Menke. While he doubted the
newFadarated Commonwealth would be stupid enough to attack
Menke, Archie didn'tlike having hisfirstregimont, the Nightridore,
alone withno backup. Contlct among the Liao commanders over
Maximilian's situation further disrupted efforts to defend the
Capelian Confederation.McCARRON’S ARMORED CAVALRY
Barton looked forward to the war because, as always, he
wanted to glve Davion a coodpasting. Writenhistory says Barton
did not get everything he warted. But, as with most historical
accounts, authors sometimes show sympathy for one side over
the other. Accurate encugh on the accounts describes, Davion's
history falls 1o,cover al ofthe actions, eepecially those that cast
the Confederation armed forces in a postive light.
‘Amarg the missing accounts was the skimish betwean
Barion and the newly resupplied Davion Crater-Cobras and
‘Screaming Eagles, who attempted to prevent ie MAG Dropships
fromleaving Sarna. This time, Barton had ne aerospace ace inthe
hole; all of his fighters wore koaping the Davion forces busy. To
‘gain time to load tne DropShips, Barton asked for volunteers to
hold off the enemy attack. Archie volunteered, butBiarton andthe
other commanders rejected his offer. Archie argued, bul gave in,
knowing the MAC could not afford to lose their leader.
‘Barton courtorattackod with clogo to afullragimont ot Meche

safety of MechWarriors forced to abandon their machines. The
tanks sot themselves up as.alast line of defense, and the infantry

‘The combined Eagle and Cobra force wantedthe MAC badly
afier the pounding the MAC hed given the Fifth Fusiliers. When
Barton's fereas advanced on theirflank, they thought itwas.afeint
todraw them off. They continued forward and had nearly reaches
the tank line when reports of fighting poured in.
Barton's counterattack shocked the Cobra and Eagio com:
manders, because Barton's army was half the size oftheir own,
Hf they split ther forces to deal with the MAC's tanks, thay coula
also strike the DrepShips, but Barton's odds would improve. If
they Kept the force together, the DropShips would have time to
load. Barton settled the matter for them by publicly boasting that
he would not leave a single Davion "Mech standing on the feild.
‘iter hearing Barton brag ‘or weeks and seeing so many ot
their MothiWarriors éio at hie hands, the Cobra and Eagle com-
anders decided to kill Marcus Barton no matter what the cost
Both forces engaged Barton's Regiment, leaving the tank line for
mop-up. The battle lastad for nearly two houre and was one of the
‘most brutal of the Fourth Succession war.
Inthe end Barton lost almost halfhs force, and some ‘Mechs
that made it back were headed for the parts bins. The combined
Eagle and Godra forces lost nearly two-thirds of their “Mechs.
Barton himself cut down a number of Davion light and medium
"Mechs in his intial aiteck. He alse killed several heavy and
assault Mechs. Barton’s "Mech was one of the last off the fie,
land returned to the DropShip with both arms gore, its left torso
shot away, and more armor on its back than on its front.
The Federated Commonwealth had won the fignt, but the
MAC tll stood. Tho Davion forces tied to ongage theremaining
tanks, but after the fist few salvos, retreaied and called tor
reinforcements. In tha meantime, the MAC loaded all tha remain-
ing tarks on the DropShios and ited off.
The losses on Sarna were a blow to Archie, and he realized
henvededtime to rebuid, After returning to Menke, Archie placed
Rodney Finn and Samuel Cirristobal in temporary command of
the Nightriders and Barton's Regiment, respectively. Archie gave
Mareus Baxtor temporary command of the MAC and Menke until
he returned.
‘Archie, lan MacPhearson, and Barton then went out to
recrult, and Archie began to set up a web of trading companios
and ofces in nearly ak the Suscossor States. Archie dealt with
‘what was becoming the Federated Commonweath, but only on
the Cormmorwealth side, though he bought Davion technology
through middlemen. Archie 2lso developed contacts in the
Tauran Concordat, and secured a "Mech supply agreement
through one of his new trading concerns.
Barfon and MacPhearson began recrultng through Mech-
Warfo: halls and Barton's contacts on Solaris. Berton also went
backinto the arena. Hie agohhad not elowod his fighting skile, and
he reestabished his reputation as an outstanding arena warrior.
'By 3032 Barton and lan had recruited and trained enough mento

Interstellar tracing company, MTC, Inc. thatnat only got supplies
and new technology for the MAC, but aso sold goods and
services to other organizations. With his new company, Archie
began to expand tne MAC'S facies on Menke, ~
BACK TO BUSINESS
‘When the Andurien forces ofthe Free Worlds League began
raiding Liao space, many felt the Ardurions wore simply probing
forweak spots. By the time Andurien attacked Betelgause, Archie
had already sent Barton and lan back to their reagents. Archie
remeined on Menke io take care of business with MTC. Barton,
lad to be back in command, wanted a few good fights to revive
the MAC's flagging pir aftr the loss on Sama. Bartor's second-

related tothe ruling family through amaariage that took place more
than four generations ago. The famiy runs several mining ang

family property whan he came ofage, buthe refused. Instead, he
trained asa MecsWarrior and joined a small mercenary company
as a scout
{After working with several small companies, hejoined Archie
‘McCarron in 3035. Noting his hevy ‘Mech experience, Archie
assigned Nng-Ti to Barton's Regiment. Barton put him in the
Third Lance of the Fist Company and gave him an Archer, laler

‘Ning-Ti showed his true caling in te war witn Gariopus and

a fusion explosion, the enemy MechWartior popped his hatch.
Aor the fight, Barton promoted Ning-Ti o lance commander.
Several times over the years, Ning-Ti tried to reconcile with
his famiy, but they spumed him. Despite the wealth and tame
Ning-Ti earned as a member ofthe MAC, the old wourds refused
to heel. His anger affected his battlefield performance; he got

‘Overview:
‘The end of the Fourth Succession War left the Capallan
Confederation in a shambles. It ost half of is starsystems in the
Confit, along with most of ts industrial base. The fighting and the
resulting oeenomic dietocation drastically reduced the Capelans’
miliary production. Adding to their woes, the Duchy of Andurien
andthe Magistry of Canopus attacked the Ligo state a year after
the Succession War ended.
Romano Liao's paramour atthe time was Ivan Maladev, an
up-and-coming miltary weapons designer and student of twenti-
eth-century Russian history. The Capelian miltaryneededweap-
ons fast and cheap, since Gandace Liao hed purloined a sizable
portion of bath etato and family funds when sho defectac to the
Federated Commonwealth. Taking page from the encient
Terran Soviet Union's history, ivan designed a 60-ton armored
tank that packed a hefty punch. More importantly, it used simple
‘components that could be manufactured on most planets.
Pressured by arm-twisting from Romano, the miftary ac-
‘cepted the tank, rushing it rom design to production in a record
fourteen montns. Romano Liao named te new vehicle the Po,
after the mischievous and vengeful Chinese spirit. Ivan Maladev
never lived to 8ee hs tank's success. He wae “accidantall" shot

‘The 240-rated ICE engine moves the Po at a respectable 43
kph cruise or 65 kph flank speed. The Po is a basic tank, with an
{AC-10 in the turret and two machine ouns for close support. One
machine guns mounted nextto the autocannon, giving the turret
‘a Pattor-like sinouette. The other machine gun is ball-mounted
in the front
‘The Po carriestwoandahaiftons of armor in he frontalono.
A sturdy vehicle, it has no glaring weaknesses In its protection.
The Po is a no-fils machine, often derided as the poor man's
ommelPatton tank. Despite the jokes, the Po is becoming the
principal combat vehiole on Gapellan planets without "Mech
forces.
‘Sinoe 3038, the Po has been released for sale to mercenary
units. Is low cost, easy maintenance, and respeciable firepower
have gained # considerable popularity. Growing eales have
spread the Po across the Inner Sphere, and brought much-
rneaded C-bils to the Capellan treasury.
Battie History:
In 9025 a frach battalon of Po tanks arrived to support a
Home Guard infantry unit covering the flank of the advancing
MeCarron’s Armored Cavalry. The Third Batalion of the Seoond
Defenders of Andurion struck the Liao postion.
‘The Andurien ‘Mechs chose to standoff and poundithe Liao

minutes of furious combat, the remaining two dozen eperational
Po tarks routed the Anduriens. The tanks had crippled or de-
stroyed ffteen ofthe enamy’Mechs. Impressed, Archie McCarron
ordered a number of Po tanks for the MAC.Mase: 20 tone

‘Overview:
Fortrose Bourgogno’s planners wanted a squacron of aaro-
‘space fighters stationed there permanently ta provide support for
the static defenses. The Federated Commonwealth's High Com-
mand, nct wanting a large numbor ofits eerospace fightors siting
idle, gatused to assign therm.
‘The designers fell back on convertional fighters to fill the
‘support role, just as Federated Boeing finished work on a proto-
type support fighter. Bosing enginers claimad the inspiration for
the Jump Bomber camo from a stunt the Liso Guardian plots
developed to increase their survival odds.
Guarchan pilots know that using corwentiona tactics on a
bombing run was tantamount to suicide, Their aircraft could not
sunive 2 singl hit rom most weapons. To stay alive, they
developed a new tactic;instead of diving directly atthe target unt,
they dove a shot distance away, released a cluster of small
bomts, and counted on lck to cary the ordnance inthe Fight
recon. This tacic worked bes! for bombing acluster of vehicles
or Mechs.
Capabilities:
‘The Jump Bomberis a customized version of the Guardian,
‘The Guardian's weapons are removed to make room fora larger
‘engine, allowing the fighter to carry more bombs than a Guardian
can haul at the same speed.
‘The Jump Bomber designers made the fighter simple to
‘maintain ang inexpensive to produce. Even using the Liao sur-
vival tactic, most of these aircraft only last through @ single bata,
‘making easy maintenance and replacement vial.
“The Jump Bombers design flaws are easy tospot. Havingno
‘weaponry and litle armor, iteannt engagain adogfight. The lack
‘of weaponry also makes i! useless except as a bomber or scout
plane, and it would rarely be assignad to a field unit. The Jump
‘Bombers best suited to provide support for long-term fortifice-
tions.
Battle History:
‘The Boeing Jump Bomber has no batle history to speak ot.
“The first production run of 25 was chipped to Marletta to bo
stationed at the rebuit Fortress Bourgogne. Boeing will have to
walt for an attack on the forress to see how their fighter fares in
combat.
‘The frst few mock combats in the Jump Bombers prototype
‘tials failed disastrously. Tho test plots could not override their
normal reflexes, and kept hiting the area they aimed for. Fow
bombs strayed onto enemy units. Boeing tossed lis regular test
plots off the trials and hired the entire graduating class of the
‘Acmsirong Flight Academy to finish the tests. With green pilots
flying the prototypes, Boeing got a beter idea ot how ts panes
right fare in actual combat. Experienced pilots are not assigned
to the dump Bomber.FHE KILLIAN HILLS
