Kids need backpacks for keeping track of

work. Pencils and paper are needed to write
notes down. Calculators and rulers are
necessary for finishing equations.
Sadly, not all children have access to
school supplies.
How can this affect their social life and
future academic success?

Thousands of children within the Charlotte

Mecklenburg school system have to face
this uncertainty everyday.

Twenty-two percent of children in the

United States are living in poverty
(http://www.npc.umich.edu/poverty/). It is
an issue that hits home in Charlotte.
Children living in impoverished conditions
are less likely to have the materials to be
prepared for school each fall. Lack of
preparation for school can lead to students
not being able to achieve on the same level
as other students. Since education is
considered the foundation to being
productive in society, this is a big deal.
Classroom Central, a non-profit
organization in Charlotte helps provide free
school supplies to students and enrich their
lives.

Donations are taken from both individuals

their students.

Qualifying teachers must teach at a high
poverty school or volunteer for a certain
number of hours. Resources are not
unlimited so the materials must be rationed
per teacher. Still, this is an irreplaceable

Jill Dineen Scott is the executive director
of Classroom Central. She works with a
talented and passionate group of
individuals. Day to day operations include
anything from sorting and stocking
donations to coordinating volunteers and
fundraising events.
It is amazing how much people come
together when they share a vision.
Everyday Classroom Central helps provide
school supplies to children who are in
situations where they do not have access to
it. This organization knows that a backpack
to a child is more than just a backpack; it is
their future. That backpack could prepare
them for years to come. Education serves
as a way to open the door to more
opportunities.
This enthusiastic organization reaches out
to the community everyday and the
community responds. Each teacher that
takes part of teacher shopping is urged to
have their class right a thank you letter to
send to local business that support
Classroom Central.
Word of mouth through schools can lead to
support from teachers and parents. They
have also utilized social media devices to
keep Charlotteans updated. Through these
digital tools, supports can interact real time
with updates and events. In fact, their

Investing in the future of children is no
easy task. The staff and volunteers work to
lessen the problem of children not being

Every day they work to build support and

Classroom Central has helped to enrich the
lives of not only children but supporters of
education as well.
