Purpose:
It is an important test that measures the concentration of glycosylated hemoglobin in the
blood. This is the amount of hemoglobin bound to glucose. The test is used to determine if the
blood sugar level has been high for a long time.
Nursing Consideration:
Pretest:
- Explain to the patient what this test is all about
- Tell patient that this test requires a blood sample. Explain who will perform the venipuncture
and when
- Explain to the patient that she may experience slight discomfort from the needle puncture and
the tourniquet
- Inform the patient that she need not to restrict food or fluids
Posttest:
- Apply direct pressure to the venipuncture site until bleeding stops
- Instruct patient to resume any medications stopped before the test

Preparation
Explain to the patient that this test detects disorders of glucose metabolism and aids in the
diagnosis of diabetes.
Tell the patient that the test requires a blood sample. Explain who will perform the venipuncture
and when.
Explain to the patient that he may experience slight discomfort from the tourniquet and needle
puncture.
Instruct the patient to fast for 12 to 14 hours before the test.
Notify the laboratory and physician of medications the patient is taking that may affect test
results; it may be necessary to restrict them.
Alert the patient to the symptoms of hypoglycemia such as weakness, restlessness, nervousness,
hunger, and sweating and tell him to report such symptoms immediately.
Posttest
Apply direct pressure to the venipucture site until bleeding stops.
Cholesterol
Purpose:
also called a lipid panel or lipid profile is a blood test that can measure the amount of
cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood. A cholesterol test can help determine your risk of the
buildup of plaques in your arteries that can lead to narrowed or blocked arteries throughout your
body (atherosclerosis). High cholesterol levels usually don't cause any signs or symptoms, so a
cholesterol test is an important tool. High cholesterol levels often are a significant risk factor for
heart disease.
Nursing Consideration:

- Tell patient that this test requires a blood sample. Explain who will perform the venipuncture
and when
- Explain to the patient that she may experience slight discomfort from the needle puncture and
the tourniquet
- Instruct the patient to fast for atleast 12 hours before the test. Tell the patient that he may drink
fluid.
Posttest:
- Apply direct pressure to the venipuncture site until bleeding stops
- Instruct patient that he may resume her usual diet and medications stopped before the test.
