CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION
In this chapter the writer explains the introduction of the
research. It contains background of study, statement of the
problem, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope
and limitation, hypothesis, and definition of key-term.
1.1 Background of The Study
The purpose of study English is to use the language to
communicate with other people in the world. To get a good
communication need a good in speaking. In the good speaking must
give attention of how the way to speech the word correctly. The way to speech the
word is called pronunciation. It means that pronunciation is one of the most
important aspects to communicate with the other people. Carter and Nunan
(2001:56) state that pronunciation deal with the production and perception of the
significant sounds of particular language in order to achieve meaning in context of
language use. Pronunciation used to make the speaker speaks more fluency and
easy to understand. Sometimes how to measure the peoples English speaking
skill is looked by their pronunciation and their fluency. Basically, in English
pronunciation, if they are wrong in pronouncing a vowel or consonant in a word it
can make the word have different meaning, so pronunciation is very important to
communicate with the other people.
Learning English pronunciation is not easy, especially in Indonesia.
English in Indonesia is not being the primary language or the secondary language,

but as a foreign language. A foreign language is only found in a classroom where

the language is being learned (Fachrurrazy, 2012:6). It means that an English
environment is difficult to find here. But it is not a big problem in this era.
Creating an English environment can be easily gotten by listening English music,
watching English movies and many native speaker videos that getting from the
internet. Those media can increase the English ability, especially for English
pronunciation. Because from those media can imitate how the sound is produced
by the native speaker sound.
The key to successful pronunciation teaching, however, is not so much
getting students to produce correct sounds or intonation tunes, but rather to
have them listen and notice how English is spoken - either on audio or
video or by their teachers themselves. The more aware they are, the greater
the chance that their own intelligibility levels will rise (Harmer, 2007:
250).
Listening a sound, stress and intonation from the native speaker is needed in
learning English pronunciation very much. We can understand when we talking
with the teacher, friend or people around, but when we meet the native and talking
with them we will get difficulties to understand what they are saying because of
seldom to hearing their accent, and also it is difficult to the native to hearing our
accent. So it makes the communication will not be enjoy. Kenworthy (1988:4)
argues that the native language is an important factor in learning
to pronounce. English; this is clearly demonstrated by the fact
that a foreign accent has some of the sound characteristics of
the learners native language.
There are many good reasons for encouraging students to watch while they
listen. In the first place, they get to see language in use (Harmer, 2007:308).

Many reason for learning by video, especially in native speaker videos focusing
for pronunciation component, student will get good stress, intonation, and accent
is directly like a native speaker. This habit will memorize automatically, and it is
create a motivation to talk like a native by themselves.
The researcher chooses native speaker videos to be experimented in
learning pronunciation because it can be demonstrated for teaching and learning in
the class. Student can listen and watch the native speaker demonstrate the sound
out of the phonetic symbols from the mouth, the difference voiced and voiceless,
and et cetera. Besides, the student can watch those videos repeatedly and can
practice by themselves at home. The researcher also gives a motivation to the
student to often watching the videos at home as their habit. Because watching
videos just in the classroom is not enough without supported by frequency of the
student to watching it at home, it is not just watch and get, but it to listen, watch,
learn, imitate and practice. Because language development is viewed as the
formation of habits (Lightbown & Spada, 2001:35). The more they often watching
and listening native speaker videos, the more they can easily to pronounce many
words automatically because of their habit. The students must learn and practice
in continually. So that is way native speaker videos can be an alternative media in
learning pronunciation for the student to repeat more at home than from the
teacher demonstrate just in twice up to three times in the classroom.
The researcher will demonstrate the videos that easily find in the internet.
For example Rachels English, which is a series of free pronunciation videos
that teach phonetics and correct English pronunciation. Other recommended
youtube pronunciation channels are Dave Sconda (English Meeting), English with
Jennifer, Amy Walker, Speech School.

1.1 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Based on the background of the study above, the research problem is formulated
as follows :
Do students learning pronunciation by native speaker videos achieve better
pronunciation ability than those taught by non-native speaker explanation to

the second semester of English Department UNISLA?

How is the students response on learning pronunciation by native speaker
videos at second semester of English Department UNISLA?

1.2 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

Regarding the statement of the research problem, this study aims at :

To know whether the native speaker videos are effective in learning

pronunciation at second semester of English Department UNISLA.

To know the students response on learning pronunciation by native

speaker videos at second semester of English Department UNISLA.

1.3 HYPOTHESIS
There is significant effectiveness of learning pronunciation by native speaker
videos achieve better pronunciation ability than those taught by non-native
speaker to the second semester of English Department UNISLA.

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The researcher hope the result of this research can be used for:

The English teacher/ lecturer

The native speaker videos are able to be a good media for the
teacher/ lecturer to improve students pronunciation.

The Students
The native speaker videos are able to be a good media for the
students to improve their pronunciation.

Further researcher
By knowing the result of this study, another researcher is able to find
out

alternative

way

teaching,

especially

to

improve

students

pronunciation.
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
In this study, the researcher conducts the research at the second semester
of English Department UNISLA to find the good way in the effectiveness
of the students ability in pronunciation through native speaker Videos.
Those relative videos are about how to pronounce the phonetic symbols
sound that consist of vowels, consonants, diphthong, voiced and voiceless,
intonation, stress, etc.

1.6 DEFINITION OF KEY TERMS

Some terms related to the study need to be defined. The following is the
definitions of the terms used :

Effectiveness is from effective, it is having the desired effect or producing

the intended result, and then added by ness, become effectiveness. A.S
Hornby (Ahmad Syaifudin, 2009:7)

Pronunciation is the act or manner of pronouncing words; utterance of

speech (Cahyono and Widianti, 2011:121).

Native Speaker Videos is a video that the speaker is not from a local
people in Indonesia, but from native/ indigence from England or America.
