Inthe16thcentury,anageofgreatmarineandterrestrialexploration,FerdinandMagellanledthefirst

expeditiontosailaroundtheworld.AsayoungPortuguesenoble,heservedthekingofPortugal,but
hebecameinvolvedinthequagmireofpoliticalintrigueatcourtandlosttheking'sfavor.Afterhe
wasdismissedfromservicebythekingofPortugal,heofferedtoservethefutureEmperorCharlesV
ofSpain.
Apapaldecreeof1493hadassignedalllandintheNewWorldwestof50degreesWlongitudeto
SpainandallthelandeastofthatlinetoPortugal.MagellanofferedtoprovethattheEastIndiesfell
underSpanishauthority.OnSeptember20,1519,MagellansetsailfromSpainwithfiveships.More
thanayearlater,oneoftheseshipswasexploringthetopographyofSouthAmericainsearchofa
waterrouteacrossthecontinent.Thisshipsank,buttheremainingfourshipssearchedalongthe
southernpeninsulaofSouthAmerica.Finallytheyfoundthepassagetheysoughtnear50degreesS
latitude.MagellannamedthispassagetheStraitofAllSaints,buttodayitisknownastheStraitof
Magellan.
OneshipdesertedwhileinthispassageandreturnedtoSpain,sofewersailorswereprivilegedtogaze
atthatfirstpanoramaofthePacificOcean.Thosewhoremainedcrossedthemeridiannowknownas
theInternationalDateLineintheearlyspringof1521after98daysonthePacificOcean.During
thoselongdaysatsea,manyofMagellan'smendiedofstarvationanddisease.
Later,MagellanbecameinvolvedinaninsularconflictinthePhilippinesandwaskilledinatribal
battle.Onlyoneshipand17sailorsunderthecommandoftheBasquenavigatorElcanosurvivedto
completethewestwardjourneytoSpainandthusproveonceandforallthattheworldisround,with
noprecipiceattheedge.
