INTRODUCTION

Oftentimes, students in Colleges and Universities are forced to take

courses that they are not interested in. Though there are still a large number of
those who are taking their preferred courses, it seems that most of the students
nowadays are deprived of the right to choose the course of their preference. Will
this lack of interest in the course the students are taking have an underlying
effect on their academic performance?
The Relationship between Taking Preferred Course and Academic
Performance is a study done at Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College (Tabaco Campus)
by a group of researchers to answer this question. It contains gathered data
organized in tables and texts for a precise and orderly presentation of the data
collected and easy understanding of the data presented. The researchers have
included

summary of

their

research

together

with

conclusion

and

recommendation.
Specifically, the study will answer the following questions:
1. What is the academic performance of the students who have taken up
their preferred course?
2. What is the percentage of the students who took up the course they
really prefer?
3. What are the reasons why students choose the course?
4. Is there a relationship between taking preferred course and academic
performance?

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TAKING PREFERRED COURSE AND

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
Academic Performance of the Students
The study on the academic performance of the students in Dr. Carlos S.
Lanting College (Tabaco Campus) will indicate the outcome or extent to which
students have achieved their educational goals. This is important to the research
so that the researchers will be able to say whether or not the students have
satisfactory academic achievements.

(Tabaco Campus) have grades of 76%-80%, another 17% has 81%-85% grades,
20% of them have 86%-90%, 43% has 91%-95%, and 3% has 96%-100%.

The data also indicated that the mean is 88%, the median is 90%, and the
mode is 92%. It means that the average grade of students in Dr. Carlos S.
Lanting College (Tabaco Campus) is 88%. It can also be observed that half of the
students have grades less than 90% and the other half have grades greater than
90%. The data also revealed that most of the students grades are 92%.
This means the students in Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College (Tabaco
Campus) have very satisfactory grades.

satisfactory academic performance.
Percentage of Students Taking Preferred Course

The study on the percentage of students in Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College

(Tabaco Campus) who are taking their preferred course will indicate the level of
interest of students regarding the course they have taken. This is important to the
research so that the researchers will be able to determine whether there is a
large or a small number of students taking preferred course.
