College and Career Development Intern


The Organization
The mission of Chaldean and Middle-Eastern Social Services (CMSS) is to help refugee
communities maximize their potential toward a better way of life, as well as to facilitate their
acculturation into American society. To this end, CMSS educates and empowers resettling
Chaldean and Middle-Eastern refugees by providing them with the primary healthcare and social
service tools and programs necessary for comprehensive well-being and success in their new
homeland. Founded in August, 2005, CMSS currently serves more than 21,000 refugees each year
through its seamless continuum of primary medical care and social service assistance in El Cajon.
Intern Responsibilities:
As a community-based nonprofit organization located in El Cajon, CA, CMSS depends upon the
dedicated support of energetic interns and volunteers to fulfill its mission. CMSS continues to
rapidly expand its programs and operations, and is currently seeking a College and Career
Development Intern to join its dynamic team for the spring quarter, 2015. The Intern will:
Facilitate successful completion of college and financial aid applications for CMSS student
clients
Train CMSS volunteers to navigate online college and financial aid application forms
Support CMSS Program Directors to organize career skills training workshops
Facilitate resume-building seminars for CMSS volunteers and clients
Assist job-seeking clients with job applications, cover letters and interview preparation
Collaborate with relevant staff to identify relevant job openings in the community
Develop a Know Your Employee Rights training curriculum
Report progress and participate in strategic planning sessions with CMSS staff
Requirements:
Excellent English speaking, writing and editing communication skills
Strong computer skills (MS Office, Google Drive, Internet-based research)
Excellent cross-cultural interpersonal skills, particularly with English language learners
Experience working with refugees and/or in the career development field a plus
Arabic language skills a significant plus
Time Commitment: 10-15 hours/week, flexible schedule
Compensation:
This is an unpaid internship, however you will gain hands-on experience working with a dynamic
team in a rapidly growing non-profit. CMSS will openly support you with letters of
recommendation, skills training and securing academic internship credit, where applicable.
