COURSE DESCRIPTION
English 050 is a preparatory writing course designed for students entering any college program
that requires English 11 as a prerequisite. Students will develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes
relevant to future college programs and career fields.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After successfully completing English 050, the student will be able to

Write in a variety of styles (narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive)


Write for a variety of purposes and audiences
Apply the writing process (prewriting, writing, and revising)
Demonstrate basic grammar and sentence skills in writing
Demonstrate basic word processing skills in written assignments
Develop his/her personal writing style/voice
Self-edit writing and analyze other writing samples
Critically evaluate a variety of reading passages

Carry out library and on-line research


Organize and deliver an oral presentation

DELIVERY METHODS/FORMAT:
Each class will consist of a combination of lecture, discussion, group work, and individual
writing activities. Some time will be allowed for starting assignments in class, but most of the
writing assignments will be completed outside of class time. Students should expect to put in
about four to eight hours of work per week outside of class time.
PREREQUISITES:
Acceptance to College Prep with appropriate scores on the College Prep writing assessment
OR a final course mark of B- or greater in English 040 or Communications 040.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION:
Attendance Policies
Attendance is mandatory. A student may be dismissed from a course or program if more than ten
per cent (10%) of the scheduled contact hours are missed in any one course. Dismissal from a
course may result in loss of full-time status and loss of sponsorship funding."
The following is an excerpt from the Yukon College Academic Regulations and Procedures
(January 2000) manual from section 4.01Attendance:
4.01 Attendance
Students in all program areas are expected to attend classes. However, attendance
requirements may vary from program to program. Special permission from the Dean or Chair
is required if a student is enrolled in another course and the timetables for the two courses
overlap. Attendance requirements are noted below.
Individual instructors shall inform students of the attendance requirements for their course
at the beginning of the semester
Admission to a lecture or laboratory may be refused by the instructor due to lateness or
misconduct. Students who do not attend classes or submit assignments as required may be
refused admission to further classes
Attendance at practicum activities and work placement activities (in Co-op programs) is
required. Students shall notify the placement agency as well as the instructor whenever
practicum/work attendance is not possible
Attendance for sponsored students will be reported to the sponsoring agency as required

Attendance Policies
General:

Electronic Devices
In order to be successful in classes and minimize distractions for others, cell phones, iPods and
other electronic devices must be turned off while students are in class. In an emergency
situation, the instructor may give a student permission to use a cell phone or pager.
Appropriate Language
In all areas of the college environment, students are responsible to show respect for others,
swearing, or language that is discriminatory or derogatory in relation to race, sex, ethnic
background, religious beliefs, age and physical condition is not appropriate.
Assignments
Students will be required to complete 5 major assignments worth 50% of their final course grade.
They will also be expected to complete a written research assignment and deliver it orally. This will
be worth 15% of their final grade. In addition, students will be required to complete
grammar/sentence skills quizzes and a mid-term, plus reading responses.
Rewrites: Students may choose to rewrite one assignment. A new topic must be chosen, and
the rewrite must be submitted no later than two weeks after the assignment was returned.
Late Policy: Students are allowed one negotiated late during the semester (does not
apply to the research assignment). Such requests must be made in advance of the due
date. Assignments are due by 4:30 of the due date. Late papers will receive a penalty of
half a letter grade. Assignments will be accepted up to two weeks after the due date.
After that, the student will receive a mark of zero.

Yukon College English 050 is articulated as Advanced English in the Adult Basic Education

ABE Advanced English is considered an external course authorized for Ministry of Education
credit which is of equivalent or higher standard to other MEd-authorized senior secondary
courses, but the learning outcomes differ. ABE Advanced English is deemed to meet the
