Introduction:
Approximate
Time:
10-15
minutes
Today
I
am
going
to
read
you
a
story
about
Bear
and
his
first
loose
tooth.
But
first
I
want
you
to
think
about
and
answer
some
questions
for
me.
The
teacher
will
introduce
the
book
by
asking
students
way
do
we
have
teeth?
Could
we
smile
without
teeth?
Would
it
be
hard
to
talk
with
missing
teeth?
Next
the
teacher
will
ask
students
to
raise
their
hands
if
anyone
has
lost
a
baby
tooth
or
if
anyone
has
a
wiggly
tooth?
Finally
the
teacher
will
ask
the
students
to
try
to
a
say
a
tongue
twister
without
using
their
teeth.
Examples
of
Tongue
Twisters:
Upper
roller
lower
roller
Upper
roller
lower
roller.
Bubble
bobble,
bubble
bobble,
bubble
bobble.
I
scream
you
scream
we
all
scream
for
ice
cream.
The
teacher
will
then
proceed
to
read
Book:
Bears
Loose
Tooth
by
Karma
Wilson
Aloud
to
the
class
while
thy
are
seated
on
the
floor.
Instructional
Input:
Approximate
Time:
10-15
minutes
After
reading
the
story,
the
teacher
will
ask
student
is
all
teeth
look
the
same
and
how
are
they
different?
The
teacher
will
explain
the
difference
between
baby
teeth
and
permanent
teeth,
and
that
the

hold
the
space
for
the
permanent
teeth.
When
the
new
permanent
tooth
is
ready,
the
baby
tooth
will
fall
out.
It
is
important
to
keep
baby
teeth
clean
and
healthy
as
well
as
the
new
permanent
teeth
that
replace
them.
The

teeth
and
demonstrate
tooth
brushing
wile
teaching
the

they
know
how
long
they
should
brush
their
teeth:
For
example
Sing
to:
"Row,
Row,
Row
Your
Boat"
Brush,
Brush,
Brush
Your
Teeth,
'til
they're
shiny
bright.
They'll
by
healthy,
they'll
be
strong,
if
you
treat
them
right.
The
teacher
will
explain
the
importance
of
how
to
keep
teeth
healthy
by
brushing
your
teeth
at
least
twice
a
day,
use
fluoride
(toothpaste
and
supplements),
visit
the
dentist,
floss
daily,
and
eat
healthy
snacks.
The
teacher
will
show
students
a

3
of

decayed
and
have
cavities
and

thumb
sucking,
eating
sticky
sweets,
drinking
juices
and
soft
drink
is
not
good
for
our
teeth.

minutes
The
teacher
will
use
a
form
of
informal
assessment
by
asking
students
questions
to
determine
their
understanding
of
the
dental
health
lesson:
Questions
may
include
how
we
keep
our
teeth
clean
and
healthy?
Possible
correct
answers
include:
brush
your
teeth
at
least
twice
a
day,
use
fluoride
(toothpaste
and
supplements),
visit
the
dentist,
floss
daily,
and
eat
healthy
snacks;
eat
crunchy
foods
such
as
carrots
and
apples,
and
more
foods
rich
in
calcium
such
as
a
milk
and
cheese.
The
teacher
may
also
ask
students
what
things
should
we
avoid
to
keep
our
teeth
healthy?
Possible
answers
would
include
thumb
sucking,
eating
sticky
sweets,
drinking
juices
and
soft
drink.
Differentiation:
Students
will
have
some
choices
between
craft
and
writing
activities

the
learning

Students
will
work
in
collaborative
mixed
ability
groups
in
learning

Students
who

can
do
the
fill
in
the
blank
rhyming
activity.
The
teacher
will
work
one
on
one
with
one
or
two
students
at
a
time
if
extra
help
is
needed
with
directions
and
completing
activities,
etc.
Dental
Hygiene
Coloring
Sheets
can
be
also
be
added
for
students
who
are
not
able
to
write
or
if
a
student
finishes
early.
Reflection/Teacher
Notes:
This
lesson
can
be
adapted
by
omitting
the
learning
centers
and
having
the
class
just
does
the
types
of
teeth
activity
and
singing
the
dental
songs.
Also,
if
there
are
not
enough
paraprofessionals
to
assist
students
with
the
different
learning
centers
the
teacher
could
cut
back
on
the
number
of
learning
centers.
After
this
lesson
or
when
students
have
lost
a
tooth
the
teacher
can
present
students
with
a
Lost
Tooth
certificate
and
the
class
can
celebrate
by
singing
the
Loose
Tooth
Song.
I
also
like
the
following
poem:
A
tooth
fell
out,
and
left
a
space
So
big
my
tongue
could
touch
my
face.
5
And
every
time
I
smile,
I
show
a
space
where
something
used
to
grow.
I
miss
my
tooth
as
you
can
guess
But
then,
I
have
to
brush
one
less!
