Lesson Introduction:
Approximate Time: 10-15 minutes
Today I am going to read you a story about Bear and his first loose tooth. But first I
want you to think about and answer some questions for me. The teacher will
introduce the book by asking students way do we have teeth? Could we smile
without teeth? Would it be hard to talk with missing teeth? Next the teacher will ask
students to raise their hands if anyone has lost a baby tooth or if anyone has a
wiggly tooth? Finally the teacher will ask the students to try to a say a tongue
twister without using their teeth.

Examples of Tongue Twisters:

Upper roller lower roller Upper roller lower roller.

Bubble bobble, bubble bobble, bubble bobble.

I scream you scream we all scream for ice cream.

The teacher will then proceed to read Book: Bears Loose Tooth by Karma Wilson
Aloud to the class while thy are seated on the floor.

Instructional Input:
Approximate Time: 10-15 minutes
After reading the story, the teacher will ask student is all teeth look the same and
how are they different? The teacher will explain the difference between baby teeth
and permanent teeth, and that the baby teeth hold the space for the permanent
teeth. When the new permanent tooth is ready, the baby tooth will fall out. It is
important to keep baby teeth clean and healthy as well as the new permanent teeth
that replace them. The teacher will show students a poster of permanent and
healthy teeth and demonstrate tooth brushing wile teaching the students a song so
they know how long they should brush their teeth: For example

Sing to: "Row, Row, Row Your Boat"

Brush, Brush, Brush Your Teeth,

'til they're shiny bright.

They'll by healthy, they'll be strong,

if you treat them right.

The teacher will explain the importance of how to keep teeth healthy by brushing
your teeth at least twice a day, use fluoride (toothpaste and supplements), visit the
dentist, floss daily, and eat healthy snacks. The teacher will show students a poster
3

of teeth that are decayed and have cavities and explain to students that thumb
sucking, eating sticky sweets, drinking juices and soft drink is not good for our teeth.

Modeling & Guided Practice:
Approximate Time: 5 Minutes
The teacher will quickly explain each of the following learning centers to the
students and show them a finished product. Directions will be provide at each
learning center and the teacher and paraprofessional will monitor and guide
students while they are working at the learning centers. The teachers will divide the
students in small groups and send them to the centers to begin their work. The
teacher will instruct students to complete at least one craft activity one writing
activity and the types of teeth activity.

Learning Center Activities:
Approximate Time: 35-40 minutes

The students will divide up into small groups and work in learning centers. Each
group will work about 15 minutes at each center and then rotate to another center.
The students can practice singing their new tooth brushing songs while working in
their centers. The students do not have to do all the centers during the class period,
but everyone should complete at least once craft activity and at least one writing
activity. All students need to get a chance to do the Types of teeth activity. Students
can choose from making the Tooth Keeper box or Magic Tooth Fairy Wand, and
students have a choice between the fill in the blank rhyming poem, The Tooth Fairy
Came Last Night and writing a letter to the Tooth Fairy.

Tooth Keeper Activity: Students will make and decorate tooth boxes

out of matchboxes to keep their baby teeth that fall out.

Magic Tooth Fairy Wand: Students will make a magic tooth fairy wand.

Tooth Fairy Letter: Students will use the Tooth Fairy letter template and

compose a letter to the tooth fairy explaining how they are taking care of

their teeth and how they have been good.

The Tooth Fairy Came Last Night Rhyming Poem: Student will fill in the

blanks with rhyming words such as lime/dime, pickle/nickel, Jenny/penny,

fence/pence or cent, collar/dollar.

Types of Teeth Marshmallow Activity: Students will make a set of teeth

using play dough or miniature marshmallows. Students will differentiate

between molars, canines and incisors by flattening and clipping the corners

of the marshmallows. Wads of paper an make indentations in the molars.

Students can practice flossing their teeth with yarn and brushing teeth time

permitted.

4

Independent Practice:
The teacher will send home a tooth brushing chart and a new toothbrush for each
student along with dental health stickers and encourage student to chart brushing
their teeth for one week.

Assessment/Closure:
Approximate Time: 10 minutes

The teacher will use a form of informal assessment by asking students questions to
determine their understanding of the dental health lesson: Questions may include
how we keep our teeth clean and healthy? Possible correct answers include: brush
your teeth at least twice a day, use fluoride (toothpaste and supplements), visit the
dentist, floss daily, and eat healthy snacks; eat crunchy foods such as carrots and
apples, and more foods rich in calcium such as a milk and cheese.

The teacher may also ask students what things should we avoid to keep our teeth
healthy? Possible answers would include thumb sucking, eating sticky sweets,
drinking juices and soft drink.

Differentiation:
Students will have some choices between craft and writing activities in the learning
centers.

Students will work in collaborative mixed ability groups in learning centers.
Students who have difficulty with writing can do the fill in the blank rhyming
activity.

The teacher will work one on one with one or two students at a time if extra help is
needed with directions and completing activities, etc.

Dental Hygiene Coloring Sheets can be also be added for students who are not able
to write or if a student finishes early.

Reflection/Teacher Notes:
This lesson can be adapted by omitting the learning centers and having the class just
does the types of teeth activity and singing the dental songs. Also, if there are not
enough paraprofessionals to assist students with the different learning centers the
teacher could cut back on the number of learning centers.

After this lesson or when students have lost a tooth the teacher can present students
with a Lost Tooth certificate and the class can celebrate by singing the Loose Tooth
Song. I also like the following poem:

A tooth fell out, and left a space

So big my tongue could touch my face.
5

And every time I smile, I show

a space where something used to grow.

I miss my tooth as you can guess

But then, I have to brush one less!
