PROPERTIES OF LPG:

Liquefied Petroleum Gas is mixture of hydrocarbons (mainly Butane and Propane),

which will be in liquid condition under controlled pressure and temperatures.
LPG is colourless and odourless and a little mercaptan is added to give smell.
LPG is highly inflammable and its mixture with air is combustible in the range of 2 %
- 9.5 % by volume.
Liquid LPG is lighter than water and LPG vapour is heavier than air.
LPG vapour tends to settle at ground /low lying areas and in pits and can travel long
distances in the direction of wind.
LPG is not soluble in water.
LPG cloud can catch fire and travel back to the source of leakage.

SAFE HANDLING OF THE CYLINDERS:

Cylinders to be handled with care to prevent damage

Cylinders must be transported with their safety caps in place.
Cylinders must either be carried in trolleys or rolled on their foot rings.
Cylinders must not be dropped or rolled on sides.
Body leak or bung leak cylinders shall be evacuated immediately in safe place and
safe manner.
All valve leak cylinders must be capped immediately and inform the franchisee.
Body Leak / Bung Leak / Valve Leak / Damaged Cylinders must be tagged
mentioning the type of defect.
All defective cylinders should sent back to the franchisee/plant at the earliest.
Cylinders must not be subjected to heat in order to get more flow of gas.

Connecting the Filled Cylinder:1.

4.
5.

Remove the safety cap from the valve of the body.

Observe for any pin leak by smell.
Check physical condition of the O-Ring (Washer).
Check the rubber tube/ Pigtail for cracks replace if required.
Place the Adaptor on the top of the valve and engage the same.( Demonstrate
visually)

Basic Safety Guide Lines:1. Cylinder manifold must be installed above the ground level, never below the ground
level or in cellars or in basement.
2. Always keep the cylinder in vertical position with Adaptor on top.
3. Cylinders must not be installed in any position in which they may become
overheated.
4. Avoid storing combustible/explosive material close to the cylinder or cylinder
manifold or in cylinder banks.
5. Do not keep cylinders expose to Sun, heat, rain etc.
6. Do not keep any combustible material on top of the cylinder or manifold.
7. Do not keep empty or filled cylinder without safety cap in position.
8. The room LPG is used or stored should be well ventilated.
9. Installation should be kept at convenient place so that cylinders and other LPG
accessories are easily accessible.
10. Fire Extinguishers (DCP Type) shall be provided in cylinder bank area.3nos. of 10kg
capacity per 1000kg of gas storage.
11. The Storage room shall have the caution signs such as Danger, Highly
Inflammable Gas Shed, No Smoking etc.
Maintenance of Manifold/Cylinder Bank:1. Routine Checks.
a. Cylinders
b. Manifold/Bank
c. Valves
d. Pigtails/Hose
e. Regulators & Adaptor
f. Burners etc.
a. Cylinders: - check the valve leak/bung leak/body leak /washer before fixing the
Adaptor or regulator. Check the pressure inside the cylinder.
b. Manifold/Bank: -Should be checked once in a month visually. Pneumatic testing
or hydro testing of the pipelines once in 5 years.
c. Valves: - All valves should be checked once in a year.
d. Pigtails/Hose: - shall be checked each and every time of replacing the empty
cylinder with filled cylinder.
e. Regulators & Adaptor: - Checked once in a year for its accurate throttled pressure.
f. Burners: - Burners shall be cleaned at regular intervals.
2. Valves or any other fittings on the cylinder should not be lubricated.
3. Gauges should be calibrated once in a year

Common Sources of Leakage:1. Cylinders
a. Welded Seams
b. Bung Joint
c. Cylinder Valve
d. Body Leak
2. Pipe Lines
a. Manifold arms
b. Main Pipe Lines
c. Branch Pipes
3. Appliances
a. Regulator & Adaptor
b. Burner
c. Pigtails/Hoses etc.
FIRE:What is FIRE?
Fire may be defined as the chemical reaction of specific quantity of fuel, heat and
oxygen. In air 21% of oxygen is present and 16% of oxygen is necessary for ignition.
The above three factors (Fuel, Heat and Oxygen) form the Fire Triangle. In case of fire,
we have to cut off supply of one of these materials.
Method of Destroying the Fire
In Fire Triangle
To Destroy Heat - COOLING EFFECT is necessary.
To Destroy Air - SUFFOCATION is required.
To Destroy Fuel - FUEL SUPPLY needs to be stopped.

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

Close the taps of the appliances.

Extinguish all flames.
Switch of the Adaptor or regulator.
Open all doors and windows so that fresh air enters the room.
Do not switch ON or OFF the any electrical switch in the room.
You may switch off the Main Switch if it is outside and leaked has not reached
that place.
7. Do not use electrical fan to dispel the smell of the LPG.
8. If you are not in a position to do so due to excessive leakage evacuate the place
and inform to police and fire brigade.

Emergency Handling and Dos & Donts:1. Gas leak can be easily detected by its characteristic smell.
2. For pinpointing the source of leakage only soap solution shall be used.
3. Any cylinder, which develops a leak (body/bung leak), should be promptly removed
to an isolated open place away from any source of ignition. And evacuate in a safe
manner.
4. Valve leak cylinder should capped immediately and tagged by mention the defect.
5. In case of piping leak, close the stove knob/adaptor/valve and remove the cylinder
and place the safety cap on valve of the cylinder.
6. Never repair the appliance or any part of the system when pipe line or appliance in
use.
7. In case of small fire, use DCP fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire.
8. In case of emergency keep cool and do not panic.
9. Do not spread the rumours.
10. Any hazard or potential hazard noticed must be immediately reported.
11. In case of heavy leak, stop all ignition sources in the vicinity and evacuate the people
and inform to fire brigade/police/franchise /FP.
12. Remove the effected people and arrange the first aid.
13. Use PPE to handle the LPG leak.
14. Dont use naked lights to detect the leaks.
15. Evacuate the over filled cylinder immediately and to continuous cool the cylinder.
