The College Board: Connecting Students to College Success

Equity Policy Statement

The College Board believes that all students should be prepared for and have an opportunity

About the Pictures
The pictures in this document come from past AP language exams. Whenever
possible, text in a particular language has been removed from the pictures so that
they might be used by a wider group of teachers and students.
Directions and Scoring Guidelines
Since the expectations for the speaking portions of the AP Spanish, German, and
French Exams are all slightly different, be sure to visit the picture sequence directions
for the official, current AP Exam. These language-specific expectationsas well
as student samples and scoring guidelines for AP French Language, AP German
Language, and AP Spanish Languagecan be found in the Exam Information and

How to Use This Collection of Picture Sequences
As a Pre-AP strategy for beginning and intermediate levels of instruction, ask
students to use rich description when explaining what they see in the pictures. For
beginners, use simple pictures or one image at a time.
Fill in the (now empty) signs and banners in the pictures with text in the language
you teach as a way to enrich the given contexts.
Early practice with picture descriptions may be untimed. Later, move to a timed
format as per the language being tested.
Have students record their picture descriptions, trade recordings with a classmate,
and listen to someone elses recordings. Students can then give feedback to one
another based on the AP scoring guidelines.
Before the day of the AP Exam, be sure to simulate the same testing/recording
environment that the students will experience.
As desired, follow-up on picture sequence practice with writing practice based on
the pictures.
