What we promise is inclusive policy. If it comes to service
delivery, it also has to be inclusive and resource sharing
will also be fair and inclusive as well. So anything that
really empowers women and gives women opportunity or
platform to do what they have to do as a decent Somali
citizen, we are willing to deliver that and make sure that
its going to be respected.

Educate the women so that when they give birth, they

SOUNDBITE: (ENGLISH) Shipra Bose, Senior
Gender Advisor to the SRSG:
Having the SRSG talking to women directly, is actually
listening to the voices of women, number one. Second, the
priorities that we hear that have been put together and we
heard from women, they came together and they also
know there is space where they can come, gather and talk
about their own issues. Its basically a win-win situation and
what we do with this information? We basically try to
process this in order to support the processes that the UN
is engaged in, to facilitate the implementation of those
priorities that have been put together within the peace
building and State building priorities.

UN envoy highlights role of Somali women in peace and

state building
MOGADISHU, Somalia The Special Representative of the UN
Secretary General to Somalia (SRSG), Nicholas Kay has reiterated
the UNs commitment to continue advocating for womens
participation in the nations political and state building processes,
ensuring their voice is heard in determining their countrys future.
The SRSG was speaking during an open-day dialogue organized in
Mogadishu by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia
(UNSOM), with Somali women leaders and representatives from civil
society organizations, the media and university students about
issues affecting them.
We think its very important that you raise your voices and we will
be advocating and continue to advocate for the right representation
of women in the independent commissions, in government, in the
processes for state formation, technical committees in the state
formation process, SRSG Kay said.
SRSG Kay also said he had underlined the importance of ensuring
that the New Deal Compact for Somalia caters for women,
particularly the delivery of basic services such as health and
education. Tackling gender-based violence and sexual violence
through advocacy, monitoring and reporting as well as supporting
institution of a legal framework to address such issues, are some the
priority areas he outlined.
During the meeting, various Somali women representatives called
for support to address the plight of the Somali women, highlighting
sexual and gender-based violence in Internally Displaced Peoples

Camps, discrimination in workplaces, high school dropout rates, and

unemployment amongst many challenges.
Samira Duale, a representative from the University Students Union
said that education will be key to changing mindsets and providing
future opportunities for the Somali women.
Educate the women so that when they give birth, they learn to
educate their children because they also have education
themselves, Duale proposed.
Khadar Bashir Ali, the Minister of Education in the Federal
Government of Somalia said adult education for young mothers
would be a solution.
Hawa Hassan Mohamed, the Minister of Health pledged the
commitment of the government towards addressing discrimination
against women in national processes.
What we promise is inclusive policy, if it comes to service delivery,
it also has to be inclusive and resource sharing will also be fair and
inclusive as well. So anything that really empowers women and give
women opportunity or platform to do what they have to do as a
decent Somali citizen, we are willing to deliver that and make sure
that its going to be respected, she said.
Shipra Bose the Senior Gender Adviser to the SRSG said such
engagement informed the UNs future programs, but also provided
the women with a crucial platform to speak out.
Having the SRSG talking to women directly, is actually listening to
the voices of women, number one. Second, the priorities that we
hear that have been put together and we heard from women. They
came together and they also know there is space where they can
gather and talk about their own issues. Its basically a win-win

situation and what we do with this information? We basically try to

process this in order to support the processes that UN is engaged in,
to facilitate the implementation of those priorities that have been
put together within the peace building and state building priorities.
