What is Hydrofoil?
A structure which, when
moved rapidly through water,
generates lift in exactly the
same way and for the same
reason as does the airfoil.
Second, the term "hydrofoil"
is often used to refer to boats
using hydrofoil technology.
History
1861, Thomas Moy (An English Engineer)
In 1906, Italian engineer, inventor and
aeronautical pioneer Enrico Forlanini had
driven a big Hydrofoil in Calm Water.
In 1918, Alexander Graham Bell made 5 ton
weighted Hydrofoil.
FS hydrofoils
Advantages Of FS hydrofoil
Less drag
Cheap for Journey
Can be used in Sea
Highly Efficient
Disadvantages of SP hydrofoil :
Less Stability (while turning)
Higher manufacturing cost
Requires sufficient strength of wood
High cavitation
Around 50knots efficiency decreases
SP hydrofoils
Advantages Of SP hydrofoil
Can easily turn
Highly efficient
Cheap for Journey
Can be operated easily
Perfect choice for calm water
Disadvantages Of SP hydrofoil
High manufacturing cost
less cavitation compared to FS
Not merged fully
Less suitable for Sea (transonic flow)
Requires sufficient strength of wood
Around 50knots efficiency decreases
Boings Jetfoil
Capacity : 250 persons
Speed : 50 miles/hour
Uses jet of water as a
thrust
Hydropter
It had a high speed record
(51.32knots).
Once the boat reaches 10 knots,
these immersed wings, deployed
at 45 degrees in the water,
generate an upward thrust.
the shape of Hydroptere has been
optimized to ensure a greater
efficiency of the sails while
minimizing as much as possible the
air friction on the structure of the
sailing boat
