Unit One: Art shows and Holidaying

Lesson 1 :Holidaying
1/You are on an island on holiday. Describe the landscape and
your feelings about it.(writing a post card )
I am really enjoying my stay here as everything is amazing
and beyond my expectations.
Anyone dreams to be in this place, it is a heaven on earth
The weather is great here; it is always sunny and birds are
always twittering and chirping.
The landscape is breathtaking; lawns are everywhere.
Rivers and waterfalls are sparkling and everything is green
around me.
People here are hospitable, kind and very friendly. In case of
loss, they lead you wherever you want.
If only I were born here!
It is an opportunity not to be missed.
I feel tingling with excitement as I am living the best
experience ever.

2/Holidays between the past and the present

Holidays in the past

People used to spend their
holidays at home nestling the
warmth of the family and
relatives.

Holidays nowadays
Nowadays people spend their
holidays with their old friends;
they meet to have fun and to
cast their minds back to their
heyday

Lesson 2: space tourism

State the advantages and disadvantages of space tourism:

Advantages:
A new and exciting
experience not to be
missed.
Discovering space is like
discovering a new life
Travelling into space gives
us the opportunity to make
imagination a reality
It helps to unveil the
wonders of space.
It improves and broadens
the sphere of our knowledge
as it helps us to acquire a

new set of valuable

information
It is a dream that everyone
wants it to come true
It is a sign of technological
progress.
Economically interesting for
the interested countries

Disadvantages:
Space tourism is nothing but
a waste of exorbitant

amounts of money and a

waste of time as well
It is better to spend these
huge amounts of money on
scientific research to find
cure to some incurable
diseases than on space.
Space tourism is considered
as a crazy idea

It is worthless to experience
space tourism viewing the
risks that passengers may
be prone to.
Travelling into space for the
first time is a dangerous
adventure. It is like delving
into an unknown jungle.
It is exclusive to the elite of
rich people.

Lesson4: exploring a song:

If you feel bored to death and everything around you is bleak and
dreary, there is nothing better than turning on your CD player and
listening to the latest songs .
Songs can kill boredom inside us and help us to relax and
concentrate.
Music can appease and alleviate our worries making us forget about
our daily problems.
People go a bundle on songs and spend time learning lyrics and
enjoying them.
Lesson 6: A package Tour:
Travelling alone:
As self independence is
what everybody is looking
for, as far as I am concerned
travelling alone means
enjoying more.
To avoid misunderstanding
or misbehavior, there is
nothing better than
travelling alone.
The majority of tourists
travel to escape noise and
routine and enjoy calmness
thats why travelling alone
seems like the best option

Travelling in a package
tour:
Believing in safety in
numbers, being in a group
seems to be the most
wonderful idea.
Being with others is having
the opportunity to ask more
questions and hence learn
more.
We cant enjoy ourselves
alone the way we do within
a nice group
People have the chance to
get acquainted with one

another and hence add

flavor to their holiday.

Lesson 7: at the travel agency:

Complaining about a hotel:
I am writing to complain about the farce that I have experienced in
this hotel.
Everything is bad.
The staff are neither cooperative nor helpful because whenever you
enquire about something, they just ignore you or cut you dead.
The service is very bad because when you order something you keep
waiting for hours to reach you.
The rooms are tiny and there is no space to swing a cat.
The food is disgusting and once I found a fly in my soup.
Too much noise; people are always quarrelling and they do not let
you sleep.
The swimming pool is always dirty and if we want to swim in the sea,
we get attacked by a whole lot of jellyfish.
I really regret coming here.
This is the worst holiday I have ever experienced before.

Unit 2 :Education Matters

Lesson 4: On-line Learning:
Advantages of online learning:

Online-learning is a good
and beneficial way of
learning.
No formal class attendance.
Working at ones own pace.
Combining family life with
education
No school rules: no
uniforms, no punishments
Flexibility
No pressure and no stress.
Saving time and energy.
No bullying

Disadvantages/drawback
s of online Learning:
On-line Learning teaches
laziness ;learners become
couch potatoes and
consequently they may be
open to some health
problems like obesity ,
eyesight problems
No physical , verbal or eye
to eye communication with
fellow students.

Missing the social aspect of

being at a traditional school.
Isolation

Virtual schools are a waste

of time and inefficient for
learning.

Lesson 7: Lifelong learning:

It is never too late to learn; Learning from the cradle to the grave.
Thanks to lifelong learning people can keep abreast with the latest.
Some adults can avail themselves of modern technology to enjoy the
comfort of learning.
It is a blow on the face of illiteracy
Lifelong learning stands for a ravenous appetite of adults who
believe that learning is endless.
Learners refresh their knowledge.
A solution for boredom and for Learners to remain active.
It is a permanent national necessity and an inseparable aspect of
citizenship.

Unit 3: Creative Inventive Minds:

Lesson 3: Interviewing The Father Of Play Station
State the pros and cons of video games:

Advantages:
Video games enhance
imagination.
Winning a game after many
attempts makes the
players proud of their
achievements and hence
teaches them that nothing

in life is impossible to
achieve if we just keep
trying.
Playing video games
teaches us patience while
challenging difficulties we
may encounter in our life.
Video games boost selfconfidence and self
reliance.

They develop our cognitive

skills

Disadvantages:
Video games can have
negative influence on the
players; they easily become
hooked and consequently
forget about what is
happening outdoor.
Students who become
addicted to video games run

the risk of neglecting their

studies, going drowsy to the
classroom and keeping
yawning while the teacher is
explaining the lesson.
Most of the video games are
violent and as people keep
playing them all the time,
they teach them violence.
Players will suffer from
obesity as they spend too
much time glued to their
chairs.
Video games are behind
family problems; players
engross in games and
forget about family chores.

Lesson6: The Brain Drain

1/What pushes and pulls people to immigrate?

Push factors
political and religious
persecution
lack of freedom
( dictatorship)
war
no job opportunities
people who want better life
conditions

pull factors
Better job opportunities
Escaping war and seeking a
peaceful life
High salaries
Better working conditions
More rights and more
freedom

famine/hunger

Brain drain is the movement of highly skilled and qualified people from
developing nations to developed countries to earn more money.

2/What are the advantages and disadvantages of brain drain?

Advantages:
It is a golden opportunity for
those who are seeking
better education in
renowned universities in the
world
An opportunity to be an
ambassador who gives a
good image of his/her
country in an endeavor to
lure tourists and people who
really want to invest.
It is a chance to achieve
ones dreams and ambitions
When highly -skilled
immigrants come back to
their home countries, they
invest and give the chance
to some unemployed people
to get jobs and be active
members in their society
and hence the rate of
unemployment decreases.

They make much money.

Disadvantages:
By immigrating to other
foreign countries, home
countries will be devoid of
highly-skilled people and
this will have very bad
effects on the economy.
Immigrants may suffer from
racism.
Migrants feel nostalgic for
their homelands; they go
abroad yearning for a
better life but leaving
behind them the hot tears
of their dear families.
The gap between the rich
and the poor will deepen
and it becomes impossible
to bridge it.
Some migrants may lose
their identity and succumb
to that of the host countries.

Unit 4: Life Issues

Lesson 1: Life Concerns
Write an article to convince people to stop smoking:

Suggested introductions:
A bleak, dreary, dark and somber life can turn into a bright and rosy
one if smokers keep to themselves for a while and think of the devil
following them wherever they go.
There is nothing worse in life than seeing someones life ebbing and
wilting like a flower without being able to shout and yell begging him
or her to quit smoking once and for all.
When you go to the market you may enjoy seeing people walking
hither and thither admiring the hustle and the bustle and trying to
buy things that guarantee their life and you may also take notice of
people thronging and elbowing their way to buy cancer sticks that
guarantee their death.
Suggested arguments:
Smoking is a walking ghost threatening your life.
It results in serious dangers like respiratory problems which lead to
asthma.
Smokers always have bad and nasty breath and brushing their teeth
to get them clean is a waste of time as it is like flogging a dead
horse.
When smokers wolf down smoke, they bring nothing to their lungs
but a killing poison
A cigarette ,when put between the lips, is like a bullet ready to
pierce ones heart and shred it into pieces.
Smoking is a burden on your budget.
When you smoke, you not only harm yourself but you also ruin the
life of people who are around you.
God has given you a soul and asked you to take care of it but by
smoking you are betraying your god.
You really need to have a strong will to relinquish smoking and bear
in mind that where there is a will there is a way.
Suggested conclusions:
It is high time you stopped smoking and bade it farewell otherwise
your life is always going to be at risk as long as you are still
breathing.
When it comes to stubbing out your cigarette once and for all never
desist a fig from doing that because remember that you are in the
right path and that you have finally chosen to lead a happy and
peaceful life devoid of threatening illnesses.
If you are thinking that the cigarette is your friend in times of need,
just drop it because it is just a wolf in sheeps clothing.

Lesson 2: Attitudes
Good values:
Being kind,
helpful,cooperative,
supportive,honest,philanthr
opic,decent,respectful,noble
, courageous,modest,down
to earth,affectionate

Bad values:
Being a
liar,dishonest,greedy,mercil
ess, a
thief,deceitful,offensive,selfi
sh

Lesson6:Urban exodus
Many people choose to migrate from the city to the country
seeking better life.what pushes and pulls them to move to the
city?
Suggested introductions:
As life is full of ups and downs, some people after mulling over and
over again, opt for moving to the country, escaping bad living
conditions and seeking a better and rosier life in the country.
seeking better life this is peoples guiding motto these days and
this is what explains the deluge of people leaving the city behind
them bidding it good bye and coming to the country with a warm Hi!
A whole lot of people find themselves unable to bear and abide city
life anymore, so they find no other solution but swarming and
heading towards the city believing that light is at the end of the
tunnel and endeavoring to lead a cozy life.

Suggested arguments:
Push factors:
Life is hard and very expensive and people have to loiter and sweat
blood to survive.
City life is notorious for theft and robbery.
The city is always chock a block with people, which makes life
disgusting and boring.
Life in the city is chaotic and fast-paced and some people find
themselves unable to keep up with the citys rhythm.
The rate of crimes is very high and city dwellers find themselves
putting their lives at risk specially at night when they are caught in
the trap of some mobs.
Living in the city is unsafe
Many people migrate escaping pollution which is doing no good to
the environment and hence making people open to dangerous
diseases like asthma, cancer.

Pull factors:

For all those who are dreaming to enjoy a simple and comfortable
life, the country is their heaven and their mesmerizing destination.
Migrating to the country gives people the chance to lead a calm life
devoid of problems and stress and full of happiness and joy.
The cost of living is lower.
People can raise their children without the fear of any kind of
terrorist threat.
It is safer to live in the country.
In the country people still exchange visits and die for the sake of
others in case of need.
There is nothing better than being in the open air enjoying the scent
of flowers and admiring the landscape.
The crack of dawn, the croaking of the roosters, the blossoming of
flowers, the buzzing of bees, the bleating of the sheep and the
twittering of birds could only be enjoyed in the country.
People intending to move to the country are lured by better health
and longer life expectancy.

Suggested conclusions:
Pushed and pulled by a number of factors, many people opt for
leaving the city, jumping into the warm lap of the country in an
endeavor to lead a happy and comfortable life.
Believing that grass is always greener on the other side of the fence,
many people never think twice when it comes to moving to the
country, escaping a stressful life and plunging into a cozier and
calmer one.
As there is a world of difference between life in the city and life in
the country, a whole lot of people choose to migrate and settle down
in the country hoping to experience an easy life.

Lesson 9: Job ADS

A letter of application :
The letter of application is not like any other letter.
It should be formal( its language is not like a love letter or a letter to
a friend)
There is no room to stating your emotions
You should respect a certain layout.
No short forms; always use a long form. ( I am instead of Im ).
It should have three parts ( an introduction, a body and a
conclusion ) without forgetting other small but very important
details: ( here is a sample of the layout )
