On my first few days of my internship, I began with a simple task to get used to the
offices working environment and the nature of production. The supervisor asked me to
find music on a website, which the department uses, for the universitys video
announcing the new Cole Field House. His assignment was to not only find music for the
video, but for it to match the theme of the video: begins with a nostalgic and historic
mood that transitions to a modern upbeat mood. My supervisor also had me search for
honors college videos that the department produced over the past 5 years and create a list
of them to submit to the undergraduate admissions department. The department plans to
send the videos to newly admitted honors students, so that they may learn about their
designated college.
Another assignment that Gabriel gave me was to use the departments hard drives, which
host video clips from previous video shoots, to label each video clip with the type of shot:
medium, close up or wide shot, subject of the clip and the setting of the video. Whenever
I had downtime, my supervisor would tell me to log onto my university account on
Lynda.com to watch video editing tutorials. These videos acquainted me with the Adobe
Premiere software. At the end of the week, my supervisor asked me to do the closed
captioning for the #NowATerp video on the universitys official YouTube page. As for
work samples, I plan on using a list of the music I compiled to send to the director, the
videos I pulled for the undergraduate admissions department, a list of the videos that I
descriptively labeled and screenshots of the closed captioning I did for the #NowATerp
video. I can also include the actual video on my blog, so that you can watch it while the
closed captions appear on the screen.

My second week began with an assignment from my coworker Joanna. She asked me to
browse the music website for her video that discusses Human Computer Interaction
within the university. More specifically, I had to find 6 modern upbeat songs that were
not considered techno. This week marked my first video shoot with the department. I was
able to shadow my supervisor and third-party individuals who handled setting up the
lighting and formatting the camera and frame shots. Because my learning agreement was
due soon, my supervisor and I also spent time planning out my final project. Afterward, I
began studying a few different documentaries to use as inspiration for my final project.
While my supervisor continued to work on the Cole Field House video, he asked me to

research information about Thomas McMillen who spoke in the video. I also created the
title screen for my final project and began shooting my interviews for my documentary.
At the end of the week, I was tasked with updating the Cole Field House script according

completing the closed captioning for the universitys Food Recovery Network video. I
also continued shooting more interviews for my final project. On top of the interviews, I
began to create the title screens for my documentary in Adobe Premiere. Gabriel asked
me to log the footage from the interviews they shot the day before and also export the
student profile interviews to be transcribed. My supervisor finally gave me an editing
project where I had to create an interview string out. Basically the long interviews that
they recorded are sent to the writers for them to create a desireable script. They send our
department the script and I had to edit the 20-minute interviews to match their 2-minute
script. As for work samples, I plan on using still images of the video I closed captioned,
the videos that I exported, the script that I received and the videos I edited based on the
script.

Although the campus closed at 3 p.m. on Monday, I was still able to come in and begin
my projects for that week. I started by close captioning the TerpVision 15 video, which is
about 17 minutes long. When we returned to school on Wednesday, I closed captioned the
Outside Influence and New Cole Field House videos on the universitys YouTube page. I
also finished the TerpVision close captioning and completed the close captioning for the
100 Years of Service: Maryland Extension video. At the end of the week, I finished
editing my first section of the documentary and began shooting my next section. The
work samples that I plan to use for this week are screenshots and videos of the clips that I
close captioned.
Professional Value
My role as an intern assists my department by making sure it uses its time more
efficiently. Because I am able to complete tasks that they would have to do on their own,
it allows them to work on a separate aspect of a project while I work on my assigned
portion. So far, I have acquired the skills of creating a title page in Adobe Premiere,
properly organizing video files, removing unwanted background noise from a video clips

audio and synchronizing videos to create a multiple shot interview. As someone who
wants to get into the production field, knowing how to use Adobe Premiere thoroughly is
a must. The majority of the skills I have acquired since the beginning of my internship
have correlated with tools found in the Adobe software. Because Premiere is becoming an
industry standard, knowing how to use it definitely adds to my marketability as a
prospective production employee.
Properly organizing video footage is a must in the production industry because it avoids
wasting time searching through thousands of files to find what you need for a project.
After receiving a preview in video editing, I would love to continue to do more editing in
the near future. It is really encouraging to see my coworkers put the finishing touches on
a video that I initially edited. I honestly do not enjoy searching for music for my
supervisor and coworkers, but I do see its relevance. According to my supervisor, it takes
hours to find the perfect music for a video. Those assignments usually take me hours to
finish because I have to go through several steps before the music is finally approved.
Personal Value
I am comfortable in this work environment because the people that surround me are open
to helping me. Whenever I have a question, I never hesitate to reach out to a coworker or
walk to my boss office. I am moderately happy because I notice that I will be able to do
what I enjoy soon, but some of the projects have become tedious. As for my goal on
learning how to professionally shoot a video, I have been on a video shoot and the
individuals there took on a teacher role as they began to educate me about different tools
and functions of the camera. I shadowed the producers as they used the DSLR camera,
objective 1, and I began to become familiar with lighting, objective 2. I think I am closer
to accomplishing my second goal because I use Adobe Premiere almost every day. I am
able to learn about the functions and tools of the software through Lynda.com and my
coworkers, objective 1. I also have increased the amount of encounters with the software
at my internship and home, objective 2.
Connect to major
I think that the social cognitive theory explains my experience at my internship. Social
cognitive theory describes the process of an individual seeing someone else conduct a
behavior, paying attention to the results of the behavior and molding future behaviors
based on these observations. As an intern, I am not very knowledgeable on production
techniques. When I am not working on my final project or an assignment, I watch my
supervisor and coworkers, and study their techniques. If I am satisfied with their product
or video, I take note of how they completed the video. If I do not like their results, I turn
to other sources to figure out how to best complete the video or project.
